Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Finally Found the Old Popsicle—Captain America
A dozen or so sailors were rudely herded off the icebreaker, their curses silenced under the barrel of a gun.
Before long, they brought over a massive drilling machine and a crane to excavate the ice layers at the bow of the ship.
Thud, thud, thud! Crunch, crunch, crunch!
Large chunks of ice were steadily broken apart by the diamond-tipped drill.
On the ocean's surface, more and more ice chunks tumbled off the glacier with loud splashes, sinking into the deep blue sea before bobbing back to the surface moments later.
Two hours passed. When Pietro saw an old-fashioned biplane slowly emerging from beneath the ice, his excitement was palpable.
"We found it! I can finally go home!"
Tears welled up in Pietro's eyes. This grueling journey of over half a year was finally coming to an end.
Once the ice layers were cleared, two Russian workers brought over a cutting tool and sawed open a one-meter-wide hole in the top of the old airplane.
*Clang!*
The metal panel fell straight down, making a deafening metallic crash.
Pietro paused, opting not to enter immediately. Instead, he signaled for two soldiers from the expedition team to enter through the opening.
Simultaneously, he shot a glance at the expedition leader, Levin Cook.
Without hesitation, Levin pulled the trigger. A burst of gunfire—*rat-tat-tat!*—left the dozen or so Russian sailors dead on the icy ground.
"Suka."
The Russians collapsed instantly, their blood staining the snow a chilling crimson, creating an eerie scene.
If they truly discovered the crash site of that relic from the last century, Pietro knew he had no choice but to silence these outsiders for the sake of secrecy.
"Dump the bodies into the sea," Pietro ordered coldly.
"Yes, sir!"
Several expedition members stepped forward, dragging away the still-warm corpses of the sailors.
When only his own people remained, Pietro, youthful in appearance but cautiously meticulous, finally allowed himself a small smile of satisfaction.
After a while, a voice came from the hole in the airplane.
"Sir, we've found something!"
"We've found someone! Frozen in a block of ice, but the life detector shows he still has a heartbeat!"
Pietro's expression betrayed his shock. That relic from the last century was still alive? This was absurd!
"Bring the entire ice block up carefully!"
"Understood, sir!"
Snapping out of his astonishment, Pietro quickly retrieved a satellite communicator.
*Beep-beep—*
"Hey, Pietro! Great to see you! How's life in the Arctic?"
The holographic projection on the communicator displayed a man with an infuriatingly handsome face—Carl Davis. Wanda's boyfriend, Umbrella Corporation's boss, and, in Pietro's opinion, his personal ATM.
Pietro's face darkened. "Listen, Carl. I've found him. Send a transport plane to pick us up immediately!"
"Him? Found who?"
The groggy Carl had just woken up and clearly forgot why he'd sent Pietro to the Arctic in the first place.
At that moment, a familiar figure appeared beside Carl.
It was Wanda, dressed in her pajamas, her expression lazy and drowsy—clearly also just waking up.
Wanda suddenly leaned into the video call's frame, her face lighting up with curiosity. "Hey, Pietro! How's life in the Arctic?"
The moment Pietro saw Wanda, his gloomy expression softened, though his resentment was still evident as he quipped, "It's terrible. If I hadn't called, would you have even remembered you have a brother, Wanda?"
Wanda looked a bit sheepish. Honestly, she *had* almost forgotten about Pietro.
Ever since her fight with Stark last month, she'd felt rejuvenated. She'd been spending her days happily glued to Carl's side, enjoying life to the fullest.
Having picked up some of Carl's slyness, Wanda retorted smoothly, "How could I possibly forget my dearest brother, Pietro? I just didn't want to disturb you while you were on such an important mission."
Hearing Wanda's obviously perfunctory words, Pietro's lips twitched. This sister of his must've been adopted.
Suddenly, Pietro's expression turned serious, and he glared at Wanda through the projection. "Are you two living together?"
"Damn it! I've only been gone for half a year, and you've already let Carl trick you into bed?"
"I'm going to kill Carl."
Carl, now fully awake, leaned over and planted a kiss on Wanda's cheek, clearly to provoke Pietro.
"Relax, little brother-in-law. I truly love Wanda. You have nothing to worry about."
Seeing Carl blatantly kiss Wanda, and Wanda not resisting in the slightest—she didn't even look embarrassed—Pietro's temples throbbed. He wanted nothing more than to punch this smug bastard into oblivion.
"True love, my ass! You said the same thing to Ada Wong and those other women!"
Pietro had once caught Carl sneaking around with several beautiful women at the Hive Base while using his superspeed. Ever since, he'd been convinced Carl was a scumbag, a playboy who toyed with women's emotions.
That's why Pietro had been so vigilant, determined to keep Carl away from his innocent sister.
But in the end, it was all for naught.
"I shouldn't have come to the Arctic. Wanda, you've definitely been deceived. Carl is a scumbag."
Carl interrupted Pietro's tirade. "I haven't hidden those women from Wanda. Grown-up matters are none of your business."
"Now, let's get back to why you called. Who did you say you found?"
Pietro's eyes widened in disbelief. Wanda *knew* about Carl's other women? Why would she still willingly be with this scumbag?
Was he the one out of touch?
Questioning everything he thought he knew, Pietro stared at Wanda in the projection and asked seriously, "You're really okay with this?"
Wanda blushed slightly, but knowing her brother was asking out of concern, she still answered, "Yes, I know exactly what kind of person Carl is."
Hearing her confirmation, Pietro's hand twitched involuntarily, his face blank.
After a long pause, he finally turned to Carl in the projection and said, "If you dare hurt Wanda's feelings, I'll make sure you pay."
Carl gave an exaggeratedly casual "OK" gesture and replied, "Got it."
The insincere promise almost made Pietro curse aloud. Holding back, he could only mutter, "Fine. Do whatever you want. But don't come crying to me if you get hurt, Wanda."
Blushing, Wanda quickly ducked out of frame, disappearing from the projection.
Carl, now alone in the video, nonchalantly asked, "So, who did you say you found?"
Pietro, his face full of exasperation, almost hung up the call right then and there. He really didn't want to talk to this scumbag any longer.
