I Became a Knockoff Arms Dealer in the Marvel World

Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Talking to the Old Fossil – Captain America

These two methods of control are very weak when it comes to someone like Captain America, whose physical condition has been enhanced to the human limit.

The Red Spider's neural control technique, given Captain America's powerful physique, could be resisted by him, allowing him to regain a brief period of clarity.

As for the implantation of a chip in his skull, while this would result in a completely controlled Captain America, his abilities would be greatly diminished.

It would be almost like a cloned soldier in terms of strength.

Because Captain America's willpower is too strong, the mental control would turn him into a 'stiff' robot, unable to move freely.

If all they could get was a version of Captain America that wasn't much stronger than a cloned soldier, Carl might as well abandon the idea of controlling him.

Umbrella Corporation already possesses tens of thousands of elite clone soldiers; adding one more 'stiff' Captain America wouldn't make a difference.

Carl planned to let Captain America complete his mission: to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D.

After all, S.H.I.E.L.D. had been secretly causing trouble for Umbrella, and if the timing weren't wrong, Carl would have lost patience and launched a direct assault by now.

Wave after wave of agents infiltrating Umbrella—did they think he was blind? Or that they didn't consider him a threat?

Carl had been wanting to deal with S.H.I.E.L.D. for a long time. If they could act without hesitation, why couldn't he retaliate in kind?

After formulating his plan, Carl made a gesture.

"Wake him up!"

The Red Queen received the command and released the restraints on the mechanical arms of the experimental table, simultaneously disabling the Red Spider's neural control.

In the boundless darkness, a faint light appeared.

Captain America, Steve Rogers, slowly opened his eyes. The blinding light made him squint instinctively.

Once he adjusted to the brightness, Captain America looked around and realized he was lying on an advanced, sci-fi style experimental table.

The floor was spotless, and the surrounding walls were made of transparent tempered glass. He felt as though he were a monkey in a cage.

Captain America's eyes were full of vigilance as he saw through the glass a young man in a suit standing outside, along with several scientists wearing white hazmat suits.

This wasn't the first time he had awakened.

The first time he came to, Captain America was horrified to find a mechanical spider on his chest and discovered that he had lost control of his body.

The feeling of not being able to control his own movements was truly awful.

Later, through relentless willpower, he occasionally regained control of his body.

At those times, expressionless lab assistants would often come and work on various advanced machines attached to him.

But this time, when he woke up, Captain America noticed the red mechanical spider on his chest was gone.

His body control had returned to him.

Captain America casually moved his arms and legs. The sensation of being able to freely control his body felt wonderful.

"Hey, you're awake? Captain America, Steve Rogers, the world's first superhero."

"It's nice to meet you. I'm Carl Davis, Chairman and CEO of Umbrella Corporation."

"I'm very sorry for conducting experiments on you without your consent."

"I hope this first impression hasn't been too bad. I hope it won't affect our conversation going forward."

Carl's voice came through the glass of the isolation room, sounding a bit muffled, but it still caught Captain America's attention as he was still adjusting to his body.

Captain America lifted his head and stared intently at the young man in the suit.

This guy named Carl, does he think an apology can make up for that terrifying loss of control over his body?

Captain America slammed his fist against the tempered glass, producing a dull "thud" sound.

Seeing that the surface of the glass hadn't even been scratched, he realized that his fists alone wouldn't be able to break through this glass.

He had no choice but to abandon the idea of breaking out, and with a determined expression, he said, "I know you're sent by Hitler. I advise you to let me go."

"Because evil fascists will eventually be defeated, and the Allies will win in the end!"

"I know what you're trying to do. You want to control me through manipulation of my mind, and then use that to undermine the morale of the Allies, right?"

"You won't succeed. I warn you."

Carl's face remained unchanged, and he silently listened to Captain America's rant.

Hadn't Captain America realized yet that he had become an old fossil?

The Allies? That term was from more than seventy years ago.

The Allies were long gone; now, it was the five rogue nations led by the United States!

Carl interrupted Captain America's rant by pulling a lever, causing several holographic projections to appear.

"Stop, stop, stop. I forgot to tell you something, Steve. You're already a relic of the last century."

"Welcome to the 21st century! It's now 2010."

"And the Allies dissolved long ago. The United States you knew is no longer the same United States."

Captain America was startled when a series of holographic projections suddenly appeared.

He instinctively reached out to touch them, only to find that they were projections without any physical substance.

On four or five different projection screens, the changes in the post-World War II world were shown.

The establishment of the United Nations, the formation of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Cold War, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the formation of the European Union, the 9/11 attacks, and the Middle Eastern Iraq War.

Entering the 21st century, the world was changing at an even faster pace.

Modern technology was booming, with space exploration, satellite navigation, and the Internet.

The emergence of Arc Energy had allowed Tony Stark to fly in the sky.

When Captain America saw recent news about the United States' "Freedom Retaliation" war in the Middle East, his brows furrowed.

He had woken up only to find that everything he knew had fallen behind, and that he had somehow crossed over 70 years into the 21st century.

What troubled Steve the most was that he might never be able to fulfill his promise to Peggy Carter to dance with her.

Carl spoke again, pulling Steve from his melancholic thoughts.

"The United States has become what it is now. Do you think it's still righteous?"

"You can find the answer yourself. I won't imprison you, Steve."

"This world has become increasingly strange. A lot of things—right or wrong—you'll need to take time to understand."

Steve didn't fully grasp the meaning behind Carl's words, but from the experiments done on him earlier, he knew that this Carl guy wasn't a good person.

He hesitated for a moment, initially wanting to ask about Peggy Carter's situation, but then decided against it.

He wasn't sure what Carl's intentions were. Steve's mind was in turmoil. All he knew was that he had woken up to find everything familiar to him was gone, and the world now felt alien to him.

Suddenly, the figure of the Red Queen appeared.

[Boss, Agent Coulson from S.H.I.E.L.D. is blocking the entrance with an armed squad. He wants to speak with you directly.]

Carl's expression hardened. Coulson? How did he get here?

Recently, Umbrella had been keeping a low profile, deliberately avoiding any contact with the sensitive S.H.I.E.L.D.

Unless...

He glanced thoughtfully at Steve.
