"Saku-senpai, you're terrible! I overtook you so easily!"
"Are you sure about that?"
"Huh? When did you zoom ahead of me?!"
This was their banter while playing a two-player racing game.
---
"There are so many zombies—I don't think I can handle them all!"
"No problem, I'll cover the extras."
"Saku-senpai, you're amazing! You wiped them all out!"
This was their exchange during the zombie shooting game.
---
"What's the attack move for this character? This is my first time playing…"
"No clue, it's my first time too."
"Alright, then! I'm just going to mash buttons—take this, Saku-senpai!"
This was the lighthearted chaos between two beginners trying their hands at a fighting game.
---
"Saku-senpai, what kind of machine is this?"
"No idea."
"Let me just pop in a coin and see—maybe it'll be fun."
"It's over already? That was way too fast!"
"This machine's a scam! I'm never playing it again!"
This was their reaction to a mysterious, disappointing game.

And so, they spent hours at the arcade, finally wrapping up their adventure by evening.
"That was so much fun!"
Stepping out of the arcade, Ikuyo Kita stretched her arms, beaming.
Having a boyfriend who never seemed to get tired and could have fun with anything? Simply the best!
"Yeah, it was," Saku agreed.
Being able to just enjoy games without any pressure to create the "right impression" or advance a relationship was a true breath of fresh air.
Ikuyo sighed blissfully. "I really hope we can go out like this again sometime, Saku-senpai."
Completely absorbed in their time together, she'd almost forgotten about taking photos and just lost herself in the games.
"Well, if we have time, we could come back again," Saku replied smoothly.
"Really?"
Ikuyo's eyes sparkled with surprise.
"Of course. But next time, we won't be here as a couple—we'll come as friends," Saku clarified, emphasizing their "friend" status. "Going out as friends to an arcade isn't unusual."
Keeping things casual and friendly made it all the more practical. Plus, it gave them a low-key way to hang out.
There was no reason to refuse.
"Good point."
Ikuyo had nearly forgotten they were just pretending to be a couple today and assumed their fake date meant no future trips together.
Being friends with Saku-senpai was pretty great!
"So, where to now? The couple's restaurant?"
Looking up at the darkening sky, Saku turned to her for direction.
"Yep, this is the part of the date I've been looking forward to most."
Ikuyo's excitement about the restaurant was palpable.
It was the perfect chance to snap a few real couple photos.
"Then let's go!"
"Right!"
---
However, when they arrived at the trendy couple's restaurant, the news was disappointing.
"Sorry, all our tables have been booked in advance, so we can't take any walk-ins," the hostess informed them apologetically.
"Oh… I should've thought to make a reservation."
Ikuyo tapped her forehead, feeling self-conscious.
She'd known this couple's restaurant was wildly popular, so of course, it would be booked out.
But she'd forgotten to check, and now the part she was looking forward to most was a bust.
"Excuse me, could you tell us when the last booking was made?"
Noticing Ikuyo's dismay, Saku lowered his voice and asked the hostess.
If the bookings had closed a long time ago, it wouldn't really be Ikuyo's fault.
"About a month ago," the hostess replied with a polite smile.
"Wait, so you need to book a month in advance just to eat here?" Saku asked, raising his voice slightly so Ikuyo could overhear.
"A month?!"
Just as he'd expected, Ikuyo's head shot up at the news.
"That's correct."
The hostess confirmed with a nod.
"Wow, this place is even more popular than I thought!"
Since Ikuyo hadn't had a boyfriend before, she knew it was a well-liked spot but hadn't grasped just how sought-after it was.
Being single, she'd never had much reason to keep tabs on a couple's restaurant, so the extent of its popularity had never crossed her mind.
If it weren't for today's "pretend date," she wouldn't have come here at all.
"So, what now?"
Once they'd left the restaurant, Saku looked to Ikuyo for the next move.
"I'm not sure."
Ikuyo seemed momentarily lost.
"I could try talking to the restaurant," Saku suggested, "see if they'd make an exception and let us in tonight."
"Wait—talk to them? How?"
Ikuyo looked at him, puzzled.
"Remember, I have over 600,000 followers on my Instagram, and I run a review account," Saku explained. "If I explain that, they might make an exception and fit us in."
In the restaurant review world, he had enough influence to be considered a minor celebrity.
By using his account as leverage, there was a good chance they'd agree to let them in.
If the food turned out to be great, he'd even offer to feature the place for free, just like he'd done for many other spots in the past.
And if it wasn't, he simply wouldn't recommend it—he'd always been honest with his followers.
The terms would be clear upfront, part of the negotiation.
"That won't be necessary," Ikuyo declined firmly. "I wouldn't want you to use your platform to pull strings for me. I don't care about the restaurant that much."
After all, this was just a single day of pretending to be a couple—she couldn't possibly ask him to go that far.
Besides, after today, they'd go back to being regular friends.
Privileges like that should be saved for his actual girlfriend.
"But didn't you say this morning that you've been wanting to take photos here for a while now?"
Saku remembered how animated she'd been earlier about visiting this place.
"..."
After a brief pause, Ikuyo looked at him hopefully. "In that case, Saku-senpai, could we make a reservation now? And come back here together in a month?"
