Chapter 37
Wen Jun took a sip of tea and ate a date to ease the discomfort in his stomach. He smiled and handed a gold hairpin to Shi Yi.
“You and Brother Pei have a great bond, which is a good blessing. I hope you could share the blessing with me.” Wen Jun had been in the Lu family since he was a child and had no family. He had spent more than a decade with Lu Chao, so they could be considered childhood sweethearts.
Shi Yi accepted the golden hairpin, offered blessings, and saw Wen Jun off from the courtyard. When he reached the main hall, many people had gathered, and they waited until the ceremony was over. However, Pei Xing was nowhere to be found.
It wasn’t until they were about to take their seats that Shi Yi spotted Pei Xing. He was supporting an elderly man with white hair on one side, and on the other side was a young man in a luxurious brocade robe. As Shi Yi looked closely at the man’s face, his entire body froze. His eyes widened as he stood still.
This man bore an uncanny resemblance to his older brother from his previous life, which was absolutely astonishing.
Although he and Pei Xing shared some similarities with their previous lives, they were quite different in appearance. Without familiarity, it might be difficult to recognize them.
Shi Yi was seated on the left side of Pei Xing, sharing a table with the man and sitting beside him. He sneaked a few glances.
Although this person looked exactly like his older brother from his previous life, their personalities were completely different. His older brother had been reserved, taciturn, and wore a perpetually expressionless face, while this man was carefree, talkative, and exuberant, with a constantly changing array of expressions on his face.
.
Pei Xing secretly squeezed Shi Yi’s hand and served him more food. He advised, “Relax and eat.”
Lu Ruiyang, observing Pei Xing, then the bright-eyed Shi Yi, raised an eyebrow and smiled, saying, “This is my sister-in-law? He is indeed very bright and charming.”
Pei Xing glanced at him coldly, he saw this man three years ago. He also thought it was Shi Yi’s eldest brother who had passed through, he tried to test him but found out it wasn’t the same person. Shi Yi’s eldest brother, Shi Rui was calm and sensible person but this man was smooth talker and playboy by nature.
When Shi Yi heard him, his eyes lighten up and laughed, “I think you are very good-looking. I feel close when I see you. I wonder how old are you?”
“I am two years older than little brother Pei. If you don’t mind, you can call me ‘big brother,'” replied Lu Ruiyang, his eyes glinting with a wider smile. He glanced at Pei Xing, who wore a stern expression, and then inched closer to his young wife.
In reality, Lu Ruiyang had no ill intentions; he was merely bored and wanted to tease Shi Yi. Furthermore, there weren’t many chances to see Pei Xing flustered, so he wanted to savor the moment.
“Alright, then I’ll call you ‘big brother,'” Shi Yi agreed without any hesitation. He picked up a bottle of wine nearby and suggested, “Big brother, let’s have a drink.”
Pei Xing, who heard the term “big brother,” felt a surge of discomfort. His eyes darkened, and he shot a stern glance at Lu Ruiyang.
Lu Ruiyang cleared his throat, avoiding Pei Xing’s sharp gaze. He then handed a plate of vegetables to Shi Yi, attempting to lighten the situation. “Drinking isn’t very good, so you should eat more vegetables.”
“Sure, I know.” Shi Yi responded, putting down the wine bottle and picking up some vegetables happily.
Pei Xing placed his arm around Shi Yi’s waist, gently squeezing and whispering in his ear, “Be good and don’t engage in random conversations with people.”
The unspoken message was clear: he wanted Shi Yi to keep a distance from that individual. This person was not his real big brother.
“Hey, I find him quite amiable. I’d like to chat with him some more,” Shi Yi tugged on Pei Xing’s sleeve and winked, indicating that he intended to get to know that person better.
Before Pei Xing could interject, Shi Yi leaned closer to Lu Ruiyang, placed a plate of vegetables in front of him, and asked in a hushed tone, “Do you know Qi symbols when it enters multiplication?”
Lu Ruiyang glanced at Shi Yi and then at Pei Xing. He remembered that Pei Xing had asked him the same question when they first met, but he didn’t answer it then. Pei Xing had asked again later, and that was when he provided the answer.
“Examine the symbols,” Lu Ruiyang casually replied.
Shi Yi’s eyes widened in an instant, realizing that this person had also experienced traveling through time!
Upon hearing this, Pei Xing immediately pulled Shi Yi aside and said, “Don’t cause trouble; it’s not what you think.”
Unperturbed, Shi Yi continued to ask in a low voice, “Shi Rui, are you Shi Rui? Do you remember when you were ten years old? What did you do?”
Lu Ruiyang, feeling perplexed, answered the question, knowing that he had been asked this before by Pei Xing. “I took the neighbor’s goose next door and killed it.”
Back then, Pei Xing explained to him that he asked weird questions because he looked like an old friend.
“Brother, I’m Shi Yi!” Shi Yi stood up excitedly, grabbing Lu Ruiyang’s hand and nearly bursting into tears.
“Yeah, I know,” Lu Ruiyang replied, puzzled by Shi Yi’s intense reaction. He had heard Lu Chao mention Shi Yi’s name and it was him who had written a blessing when sending them wedding gifts.
Shi Yi looked at Lu Ruiyang with teary eyes, face streaked with tears, almost ready to throw himself into his arms. However, Pei Xing intervened and pushed Shi Yi away.
“You are probably drunk. Let’s go rest.”
Shi Yi gripped Pei Xing’s collar, his eyes still teary, and said indignantly, “What are you doing? That’s my brother.”
Pei Xing took it upon himself to explain; all those words Lu Ruiyang knew because he tested him first. Shi Yi had misunderstood, but the misunderstanding was so profound that there was no choice but to gently coax him and clarify.
.
After hearing Pei Xing’s explanation, Shi Yi felt a bit defeated and dismayed. He questioned, “Why do you keep switching between the even and odd? And why did you tell him that my brother killed the neighbor’s goose when he was ten years old?”
“At the beginning, I didn’t think much of it. I truly believed your elder brother had traveled through time.” Pei Xing admitted. He explained that when he saw Lu Ruiyang’s face, he thought he might be Shi Rui. He was eager to find out about Shi Yi, so he tested the man.
“Both of them look so similar, like carbon copies,” Shi Yi marveled at the resemblance of Lu Ruiyang’s face. He said excitedly, “Could he be my brother reincarnated?”
“Let’s not overthink it. Many people look alike in this world, and everyone is unique. Even if we entertain the idea of reincarnation, these two individuals would have different life experiences, personalities, and remain different individuals.” Pei Xing gently advised Shi Yi. His primary goal was to discourage Shi Yi from getting too close to Lu Ruiyang.
That man was quite the playboy, already had a wife, and kept a harem of shuangers and women in the backyard, including carefully selected beautiful and bright girls.
Though disappointed, Shi Yi agreed and accepted Pei Xing’s wisdom. He acknowledged that his older brother was truly different from Lu Ruiyang.
