Chapter 38
Shi Yi spent his time wandering around Lu Mansion while Pei Xing was occupied with other matters. It was clear that Pei Xing was busy, but Shi Yi didn’t know the details.
During this time, Zhou Yan, Song Ning, and others had accompanied Father Song to visit Song Lan, Song Ning’s sister. Shi Yi found himself alone, unsure of how to pass the time.
As he wandered the gardens, he suddenly heard a furious argument not far away.
“Chu Huanjing! Don’t be so shameless!”
Shi Yi recognized the voice. It was Lu Ruiyang, who was engaged in a heated argument with a person in green clothes. Lu Ruiyang was gripping the person’s wrist and holding his chin, taunting him.
“Why are you pretending to be noble? You insisted on marrying me, didn’t you?” Lu Ruiyang’s disdain was evident. “Why are you pretending to be chaste and virtuous now?”
“I find you disgusting. Don’t touch me,” Chu Huanjing responded coldly, showing no sign of weakness. His voice was clear like a pearl falling into a plate.
“Disgusting? I’m afraid no one is more disgusting than you! Why didn’t you find me disgusting when you climbed into my bed and forced me to marry you?” Lu Ruiyang’s anger was palpable. He reached out to pinch Chu Huanjing’s face and then leaned in to kiss him, tugging at his clothes while doing so.
Shi Yi, shocked by the scene, couldn’t help but make a noise, which caught Lu Ruiyang’s attention. Lu Ruiyang yelled at him, “Which blind dog slave it is? Get out!”
Shi Yi defended himself, “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to heard it.”
As Shi Yi glanced back at Chu Huanjing, he noticed a red lotus between the person’s eyebrows, similar to his own but slightly brighter and of a different reddish shade. Chu Huanjing, who appeared cold and handsome, made this red lotus an unexpected contrast in his appearance.
Shi Yi couldn’t hold back his disapproval and whispered to Lu Ruiyang, “Men who beat their wives are beasts, and those who force their wives are even worse.”
Lu Ruiyang, who had just been mistreating Chu Huanjing, looked gloomy. He let go of Chu Huanjing and snapped at Shi Yi, “What are you doing here?”
“I was bored, so I thought I’d take a walk,” Shi Yi replied, giving Chu Huanjing a final glance. He thought Chu Huanjing was quite good-looking and had an icy demeanor with clear, cold eyes.
Chu Huanjing paid little attention to them, giving a slight nod to Shi Yi and thanking him with a cold and distant tone. Without glancing at Lu Ruiyang, he turned and walked away.
Lu Ruiyang’s expression darkened further. Shi Yi took a look at him and criticized his behavior, stating, “Why are you so childish? You clearly care about him, but you refuse to have a proper conversation with him.”
Lu Ruiyang’s face stiffened, as if Shi Yi had seen through his feelings. He seemed to be struggling with his emotions and finally said, “What makes you think I care about him? Go back to your place and find Pei Xing. Don’t wander around here.”
Shi Yi just shrugged, not wanting to engage with this childish person. It was clear that Lu Ruiyang was less mature than his older brother. His older brother wouldn’t hurt the people he cared about just because of a misunderstanding, unlike Lu Ruiyang.
Unable to find Pei Xing, Shi Yi decided to return back. Pei Xing and the old man from the Lu family seemed to be deep in a discussion and were best left undisturbed.
.
It wasn’t until the evening Pei Ying returned to the yard.
Shi Yi was wearing a somewhat disheartened expression. He felt a little annoyed with Pei Xing for being away all day.
Pei Xing could sense Shi Yi’s displeasure, so he sat down next to him, pulled him onto his lap, and tried to coax him.
Then urged Shi Yi to eat the untouched food on the table, helped him bathe and changed into clean clothes, and then placed him on the bed.
Pei Xing reassured Shi Yi, “We’ll stay here for another two days. Aunt Hong can take care of Shi Liu, and Hong Luo can stay with you at Xiyue Pavilion. We’ll go to Nanzhou for a visit.”
Upon hearing this, Shi Yi brightened up. “Are we going to find my older brother?”
“Yes,” Pei Xing replied. “I asked Mr. Lu about the Bai family in Nanzhou. Three years ago, they did purchase a child for Bai Jingxiao, the eldest young master of the Bai family. It seems Bai Jingxiao is doing fine.”
“How is my older brother? Is he still alive?” Shi Yi inquired.
“So, it seems,” Pei Xing confirmed. “I asked about them, Shi Mo is fine. The two of them even have a child who is a year and a half old now.”
“A child?” Shi Yi was momentarily puzzled but then realized that Shi Mo, who was now married, had every reason to have children. He said, “Oh, so I’m going to be an uncle… No, wait, I should be a little uncle now. Shi Mo is already married now.”
Pei Xing chuckled and held him in his arms, “Aren’t you also married?”
“Then… you should be the little uncle too?” Shi Yi was confused.
“Well, it should be. You don’t have to worry much about title. There’s no need to emphasis on it.” Then, with a hint of hesitation, Pei Xing added, “Although Shi Mo is fine, he married the eldest young master of the Bai family as a concubine. Your brother is not his official wife.”
Shi Yi was surprised and exclaimed, “Concubine? The eldest young master of the Bai family has a wife?”
His brows furrowed as he thought about this. He couldn’t help but curse the young master in his heart. But soon, he remembered that Shi Mo was good enough to be a concubine and was not sold to a terrible place. He felt a little relieved. After all, Shi Mo’s sacrifice was largely because of him.
“Bai Jingxiao did have an arranged marriage. He was engaged to Fan Qingfang, the daughter of the city master’s family in Nanzhou. Three years ago, Bai Jingxiao fell seriously ill. The Bai family originally wanted Fan Qingfang to come and celebrate the wedding with him to bring good luck for Bai Jingxiao, but her family disagreed. Instead, they arranged to purchase a child with the same horoscope as replacement.”
Pei Xing gently touched Shi Yi’s frowning face and continued, “Shi Mo and the eldest young master of the Bai family have a close relationship, and Bai Jingxiao hasn’t married anyone else yet.”
Shi Yi felt relieved after hearing this. He remembered that, in this world, if a man married a shuanger, he would automatically become a concubine if the man later married another woman. A concubine had a lower status than a slave and couldn’t raise their own children. They could be sold under the command of the wife.
However, shuanger taken as concubines at the beginning had more rights and could be protected by the court’s laws, unlike women who could be sold.
