Chapter 31 - The Northern Continent (2)
The Grand Duchy of Kapatia.
It is a grand duchy with a relatively large territory bordering the Alter Sea.
To the north, it borders the Margraviate of Glakien, and to the south, it is close to the Republic of Marea.
To the west are the Infula Church territory and the Mage Community, and to the east is the Republic of Emporusia across the Alter Sea.
With the Inforusia Mountains at its back, it is like a natural fortress, and it is also a very prosperous country due to the abundant seafood from the Alter Sea and trade with the Republic of Emporusia across the sea.
Moreover, it is also the central country of the Kapatian Pan-Human Empire.
At night, the streets would reek of fishy smells.
The traces of the children of the sea caught during the day lingered as a strand of that fishy smell wandering the streets.
The Kapatian Empire – the Empire of the Kapatian Pan-Humans.
The Grand Duchy of Kapatia, which could be called the centripetal force of the Kapatian Pan-Human Empire, a federation of several states, was a very wealthy country, but as always, that wealth tended to contribute to making those who already had more even more prosperous.
The Grand Duchy of Kapatia, wealthier than any other domain in this Northern Continent.
In the center of the bustling city of Kapatia in that grand duchy.
There stood a mansion in a location where the palace, which boasted its wealth by embedding luminous stones as big as an adult’s torso here and there to illuminate it as bright as daylight, was visible.
The time-worn mansion looked almost bleak at first glance.
Looking around from the main gate that blocked visitors with black iron bars, the grounds were so wide that the ends were not visible,
and when entering through the main gate, the mansion was seen far away, with a garden so vast that it overwhelmed the viewer.
On this late night shrouded in darkness, a candle was lit in the central part of the third floor of that mansion.
“Yes, yes… Alevian. Now I’ll be able to see the child you wanted to hide so desperately.”
The white-haired woman tilted her wine glass while looking out at the street completely engulfed in darkness, with the red curtain slightly open.
The deep red wine tilted gently, moistening her lips, then brushing her mouth before sliding down her throat.
“I feel so good, too good.”
The woman put down her wine glass.
Wrapping her arms around herself, the woman shuddered.
Her gaze, as thin as her narrowed eyes that looked as if she was smiling, was still directed outside the window.
“What kind of child will it be? What kind of personality? What kind of face? What kind of voice… Alevian, I’m so excited to see what the jewel you held in your hand looks like. So much that it makes me shiver.”
The woman in a pure white dress shuddered once more.
“It’s okay, yes… I have excellent patience. I can wait as long as it takes. Yes, as long as it takes.”
The wine glass revealed its bottom.
Although the red wine was already gone, the woman continued to lick the wine glass.
*
“Isn’t this fratricide?”
“Wild orcs are different from orcs, I tell you.”
James replied to Yona as he pulled out the arrow stuck in the middle of the wild orc’s forehead.
“Humans kill other humans too. What’s the big deal about orcs killing orcs?”
That’s convincing.
Yona thought that James seemed smarter than he looked.
It had already been a week since they left the village.
James was indeed an excellent archer and guide, so following his lead allowed them to move faster while expending less energy walking.
“It feels like the number of demonic beasts has strangely increased.”
Kairoc looked around as he shook the blood off his axe.
Wild orcs and wild goblins were actually common demonic beasts, but the number of encounters they’ve had with such beasts was already several times.
It wasn’t that the encounters themselves were strange, but the frequency of these encounters was too high.
‘It feels like the encounter rate is off, you know.’
Yona thought as she healed the scratch on Alec’s thigh.
Although it was a gaming term, even in games, that’s how you encounter monsters while wandering around.
She had been rolling around as an adventurer for 3 years after all.
She could easily notice that the current situation was a bit strange.
“Where are we now?”
At Yona’s words, Kairoc unfolded the map again.
Then, after looking at the map, he made a groaning sound and handed the map to James.
“You just keep it, James. That’s better.”
“Good thinking.”
James took the map, looked at it for a while, and then raised his head to look around again.
Even though looking around only showed mountains or plains everywhere, making it seem difficult to find where they were on the map, James soon pointed to one side of the map.
“We should be around here.”
“…Move your finger a bit.”
Due to the thick fingers characteristic of orcs and other beastkin, the place he was pointing at wasn’t clearly visible.
At Alec’s words, James gave a friendly smile, moved his finger, and pointed with his fingernail.
“It should be right above the border of the Republic of Marea. From here, if we go straight up north, we should be able to enter the border of the Grand Duchy of Kapatia.”
“Then this place should have people, at least, right?”
“That’s right. Well, we might see a village soon.”
Yona was very glad to hear those words.
It had been a week since they left James’ village, and during that time, the adventurers including Yona had been camping continuously.
Camping itself was fine, but due to the unusually frequent encounters with demonic beasts, they were prone to waking up to attacks even while sleeping, making it impossible to sleep deeply properly.
Just as they were about to fall asleep, an attack; move the campsite, and just as they were about to fall asleep again, another attack.
In this situation, one could really feel how it wears a person down.
“That’s good news, Yona. If there’s a village, you’ll be able to rest properly.”
“You’re talking as if it’s not the same for you? Huh? That’s annoying.”
At Yona’s words, Alec chuckled.
It was true that Yona’s face clearly showed signs of fatigue.
Still, Alec found it cute that Yona thought it wasn’t noticeable.
“Anyway, let’s move quickly. It would be nice to stay in a village tonight.”
At Kairoc’s urging, Yona showed Alec a fist-shaped potato and turned around swiftly.
Below Yona’s nun’s habit, her fair thigh was briefly revealed, with the hunting knife attached to it glimpsed for a moment.
Alec felt good about this.
“There’s no village.”
James, being an archer, had taken the lead as they walked across the plains.
Even as they reached the edge of the plains, no village was in sight.
Even when James looked at the map again, there was nothing visible at the location where a village should clearly be.
“Did you read the map wrong, James?”
“That can’t be. No matter how long I’ve been out of the adventurer life, my skills haven’t gone anywhere. My map reading skills are better than your axe skills.”
“You’re saying something ridiculous. That’s even funnier than saying a wild orc can read letters.”
“That’s not funny at all.”
Yona was very displeased with the two people doing a comedy routine even in this situation.
As soon as he saw the annoyance blooming on Yona’s face, Alec hurriedly came forward and patted Kairoc and James on the waist.
“Come on, anyway, what are we going to do today? Since there’s no village, it seems we’ll have to camp again today. But I’m feeling quite uneasy too, so how about taking a bath? What do you think?”
“Hmm, a bath, huh.”
“That doesn’t sound bad. Look, there’s a river over there too.”
Where James was pointing, there was a river flowing with fairly clear water.
It wasn’t a big river, but the water volume was sufficient.
No matter how rough adventurers live, they don’t disregard hygiene completely.
Hygiene management and cleanliness are directly related to survival in a different sense than injuries, so it’s better to wash when possible.
“That’s not a bad idea. It would be good to do some laundry too.”
Kairoc nodded while stroking his chin.
“But, Yona, what are you going to do?”
“…What about me?”
As Kairoc looked at her, Alec and James’ gazes also turned towards Yona at once.
“We’re going to take a bath, what are you going to do?”
“I’m going to take one too?”
“What?”
Kairoc laughed in disbelief.
“Well, I thought you might say that.”
Alec, along with Kairoc and James, enjoyed bathing in the river wearing only their underwear.
They were so filthy that even in this cold water, rubbing with their hands made the dirt come off in streams.
“Is that how you wash?”
Yona had entered the water still wearing her nun’s habit.
Moreover, she hadn’t even untied the holy cloth.
Alec, who had had just a tiny bit of expectation, felt an excessive disappointment compared to that tiny bit of expectation and asked Yona.
“This is enough for me.”
“Washing while fully clothed is enough…?”
“Hey, Alec.”
Yona approached Alec, parting the water.
She scooped up a handful of water and poured it over Alec’s head, then stroked Alec’s head with a mischievous expression.
“I know exactly what kind of expectations you had, but you know. While I’m aware that I’m a man, I’m not thoughtless enough to casually show off this female body.”
“…I didn’t have any expectations.”
It would be a lie to say he didn’t.
“Oh my, this bald guy is so gloomy. Hey, why don’t you use that breast-fondling ticket then? I’ll let you use it right now if you want.”
Yona proudly cupped her breasts through her soaking wet nun’s habit and flicked them.
Alec barely managed to tear his eyes away from Yona’s breasts, which seemed like they would make a bouncing sound even though that was impossible, so elastic they were.
“…Don’t do that.”
“Don’t do what? Huh? Don’t do what?”
“…Um, sorry to interrupt your play, but what’s this breast-fondling ticket?”
Kairoc slipped in smoothly.
And behind Kairoc, James was also watching with an interested expression.
“Oh, it’s Alec. Last time when he got badly injured, I said I’d let him fondle my breasts if he survived, and he did survive.”
“Hey, hey! Are you really telling them that?!”
Alec tried to stop Yona, but Kairoc calmly restrained him.
He hugged Alec’s waist from behind, and although Alec struggled, he couldn’t break free.
“So I offered to let him fondle them, but he didn’t actually do it. Said he’d do it next time or something? That’s how it’s been until now.”
After hearing the full story, the expressions on Kairoc and James’ faces were truly a sight to behold.
They were looking at Alec with expressions that crossed between contempt and concern, two emotions that seemed somewhat difficult to coexist.
“Oh, hey. Alec, did your head turn red? It looks just like a boiled octopus.”
What’s with the octopus…
Alec just wished for this time to end quickly, over and over again.
