Tiny bubbles rose in the solutions of the giant glass tanks, their curved surfaces reflecting distorted images. One such reflection was of Jolyne Kujo's slightly altered face, her expression tinged with curiosity.
The man in the pointed hat was called Yamahada, another meteorologist on Weatheria, this "little Skypiea". With his long white beard and wizard-like attire, he could easily be mistaken for Haredas.
As Yamahada led Robin through the room filled with glass tanks, a silent, shadowy figure trailed behind them - B.I.B., its elongated eyes watching the scene. The faint sense of familiarity stirred his mind, prompting a quick search of his memory.
Something clicked. A forgotten image surfaced.
It was this.
---
"What is this?" Robin asked, examining the liquid in the glass tanks. "It almost looks like... seawater. But no, it must be 'Sea of Clouds,' considering where we are."
"Exactly!" Yamahada twirled his long white beard with pride. "It's the 'Sea of Clouds'!"
Robin frowned slightly. "But Haredas mentioned that the 'Sea of Clouds' is essentially no different than seawater... Why would you claim that these tanks of seawater are Weatheria's great scientific achievement?"
Yamahada chuckled, his broad smile lifting his beard as he raised a single finger. "Young lady, do you know the difference between 'Island Cloud' and 'Sea of Clouds'? Why does one resemble a land and the other a sea? Or let me ask a more fundamental question: why do these particular clouds exist at all?"
Robin remained silent, waiting patiently for his explanation.
Yamahada didn't drag it out, grinning as he said, "Because of 'keratin particles'!"
"Keratin particles?" Robin echoed.
"Precisely! The difference between 'Island Cloud' and 'Sea of Clouds' lies in the concentration of keratin particles that condense to form them," Yamahada explained, stroking his beard again. "You've heard of the mineral 'Seastone' in the Blue Sea, haven't you?"
"Seastone? Are these keratin particles related to Seastone?"
"Indeed! The composition of Seastone is precisely what I call keratin particles!" Yamahada's eyes sparkled brightly, like those of an excited child. "People in the Blue Sea often say that Seastone is like 'solidified sea' or 'concentrated sea.' Haha! They're not wrong at all. Keratin particles and Seastone originate from the Sea itself— they exist in every single drop of seawater!"
Robin remained silent, her expression thoughtful as she activated her 'Kenbunshoku Haki' (Observation Haki) to glance at the dark Stand by her side.
Keratin particles...
This wasn't the first time they'd encountered that term. It was mentioned in the 'Poneglyph' they had discovered on Amazon Lily Island.
---
The 'Poneglyph' described how the ancient "Poseidon" commanded the Sea Kings to swim along the current Calm Belt, neutralizing all ocean currents. Simultaneously, they transported special coral species to be planted across the Calm Belt's seafloor.
Over time, these corals released keratin particles into the ocean, forming unique minerals that created the Calm Belt's magnetic anomalies and windless environment.
Moreover, the abundance of keratin particles from the coral contributed to the massive growth of Sea Kings in the Calm Belt, transforming them into the gigantic creatures seen today.
Robin had originally thought that keratin particles were unique to the Calm Belt. However, according to Yamahada, these particles were actually widespread, and present throughout the world's seas.
This universal presence couldn't help but remind Robin of another concept: ''Lineage Factors''.
In Dr. Vegapunk's research notes, he described special elements found in all forms of liquid—seawater, freshwater, and beyond.
Could Vegapunk's "Lineage Factors" be the same as Weatheria's keratin particles?
---
Robin's thoughts coalesced into a vivid mental image:
A cluster of coral on the seafloor, scattering shimmering keratin particles like stardust into the ocean. These particles dissolved into seawater—some absorbed by sea creatures, some consumed by predators, some carried by evaporation into clouds and rainfall, entering lakes, rivers, and eventually the bodies and bloodstreams of humans.
Through the vast cycle of water—evaporation, precipitation, and runoff—these keratin particles spread to every corner of the world, existing in every drop of water.
---
"The most miraculous treasure is often found right before our eyes," Yamahada mused, patting one of the large glass tanks. "Volcanic eruptions, seawater evaporation, rising sea currents... various natural phenomena carry keratin particles into the atmosphere, condensing them into 'Island Clouds'.
"And it is this constant cycle of keratin particles," he continued, "that makes the worldwide existence of Skypiea possible. These particles hold the potential for truly astonishing transformations!"
"Transformation?"
"Yes, transformation," Yamahada nodded firmly, his aged expression tinged with gravity. He gazed through the glass containers at the bubbling solutions inside. "By deconstructing keratin particles through technical means, we've induced them to generate wind, create fire, produce lightning... and even, on one occasion, accidentally triggered an explosion!"
He sighed wistfully. "You must know, a long time ago, Weatheria wasn't this small."
Robin stood speechless, absorbing his words.
"Look above," the old man gestured upward.
Robin and the shadowy armored figure, B.I.B., both tilted their heads.
Above them, mounted on the ceiling, was a massive glass sphere. Inside, it resembled the balloon of the so-called "weather ship" they'd seen before, with chaotic currents swirling like tiny flashes of lightning. The interior resembled a tangled ball of golden and black threads, constantly shifting.
Around the giant sphere were numerous metallic pipes, each connecting to the glass containers spread throughout the room.
"Our experiments with keratin particles were extremely dangerous and highly unstable," Yamahada explained. "Once we discovered a safe and stable method to induce magnetism, we—who were quite dashing young men back then!—built this magnetic sphere to create 'wind-based weather.' Using 'Island Cloud', we constructed Weatheria and left our homeland behind."
The old man grew nostalgic as he recounted their history.
"You must miss your homeland," Robin said softly.
"Not really!" Yamahada chuckled heartily, stroking his white beard. "The sky is the home of Skypieans, after all. It's the same wherever we are. Besides, we much prefer studying the weather! Rather than staying stagnant on a fixed Skypiea, we'd much rather drift with the wind aboard Weatheria, studying climates across the world..."
"By the way," Robin interjected, flipping open her 'Devil Fruit Encyclopedia'. She turned to the page for the 'Goro Goro no Mi' (Thunder-Thunder Fruit) and pointed to some handwritten notes in the margin. "This 'Skypiea Birka'— is that your homeland?"
"Yes," Yamahada replied with a smile. "Much of our knowledge was accumulated there. It was a beautiful Skypiea..."
B.I.B. silently surveyed the room filled with glass containers. The familiarity it had felt from the beginning now made sense—these devices resembled those on 'Enel's Ark Maxim'.
Enel's homeland was Birka.
That he could singlehandedly construct the Ark Maxim and troubleshoot it when issues arose clearly indicated he had a deep understanding of this technology.
