Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Butterfly Effect
"Aaaaahhhh!"
For centuries, humans have dreamed of flying. It has been a symbol of freedom and ambition. But being dragged into the sky at breakneck speed was far from the romantic notion Maya had ever envisioned.
Within seconds, they were thousands of meters above the ground. The wind roared in her ears, and Maya's mind went blank. Instinctively, she clung to Thor as if her life depended on it.
Thor, on the other hand, was having a hard time focusing. Maya was holding him like a koala, and while he wasn't exactly complaining, this wasn't the time to get distracted.
Before he could dwell on it further, the system's familiar notification echoed in his mind.
"Drip! Mission accomplished – Iron Man Forever! Reward: Extremis Improved Formula."
Thor: …What?!
He froze mid-flight, his expression one of utter confusion.
How?! I haven't even done anything yet! The task is already completed?!
The completion of the mission meant that the chain of events leading to Iron Man's death in 2023 had been irrevocably altered. But Thor hadn't taken any significant actions yet.
His gaze shifted to Maya, still clutching him tightly, and realization dawned on him.
This... butterfly effect is insane.
---
Later, through a brief consultation with the system, Thor pieced together the cause and effect.
The system, with its rigid, no-nonsense approach, rarely offered guidance during tasks. Thor often had to figure things out himself. But once a mission was complete, it had no qualms about explaining everything in detail.
According to the original timeline, Aldrich Killian wouldn't emerge as a major villain for another 17 years. Maya Hansen, as the creator of Extremis, would eventually work alongside him.
However, her partnership with Killian wasn't destined to last. Maya's sense of morality and her belief in scientific ethics clashed with Killian's methods. When she discovered he was experimenting on unwilling subjects with the unstable Extremis formula, she refused to condone it.
This disagreement cost Maya her life—Killian shot her.
Before her death, though, Maya managed to transfer all Extremis data to Tony Stark. Her final words to him were: "Destroy it, and start over." She died with dignity, redeeming herself in the end.
Tony, in turn, used the Extremis data to improve the formula after injecting himself with it to save Pepper. Though Tony's superpower was his mind and the Iron Man armor, Extremis granted him an enhanced healing factor.
It was this regeneration ability that allowed Tony to wield the Infinity Stones in the final battle. Without Extremis, the sheer power of the Stones would have killed him the moment he put on the gauntlet.
Instead, Tony resisted the immense strain, snapped his fingers, and ended the war.
"I am... Iron Man."
Without Extremis, Tony's fate would have been sealed much earlier, and the snap would have fallen to someone else—maybe Captain Marvel, Thor himself, or even Bruce Banner.
But none of that would matter now.
Thor smirked to himself. Stark, you owe me big time. I saved your life without you even knowing it.
---
Now that the Extremis improved formula had been unlocked, it could be developed far ahead of schedule with Asgard's advanced resources. What would have taken four years could now be completed in mere months.
Thor saw no reason to linger on Earth any longer. After all, the mission was complete.
He returned to S.H.I.E.L.D., said a quick farewell to Nick Fury and Natalia, and prepared to leave.
With a flash of the Bifrost's light, Thor departed Earth, satisfied that the future had been changed for the better.
