Chapter 74: 74: First Game
The energy inside the stadium buzzed with excitement as Midnight, standing confidently in her revealing yet iconic hero outfit, took center stage on the massive platform. Her whip cracked in the air, silencing the murmurs of the crowd and signaling the start of the event.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" she declared, her voice amplified by the sound system. "Welcome to the U.A. Sports Festival! For our first event, we have a fan favorite—the Obstacle Race! Competitors, get ready to face an array of challenges that will test your strength, strategy, and creativity! Only the top forty-two will move on, so don't hold back!"
Aiden stood at the starting line with his classmates and other contenders from the first year. The excitement was palpable, each student eyeing the others with determination. He caught Shoto Todoroki's icy stare and Bakugo's fierce grin. Aiden smirked, rolling his shoulders to loosen up.
"Try not to cry when I leave you in the dust," Aiden teased, directing the comment at Bakugo, whose fiery temper was already bubbling over.
"WHAT DID YOU SAY, EXTRA?" Bakugo barked, sparks flying from his palms.
"Save it for the race, Bakugo," Shoto said coolly, his breath visible from the icy mist forming around him.
Midnight's whip cracked again. "Contestants, take your positions!"
The gates of the starting line creaked open, revealing a wide path stretching toward a dense fog obscuring the first obstacle.
"Ready… set… GO!"
A loud buzzer sounded, and the race was on.
The First Obstacle: The Robot Horde
The contestants bolted forward, but as they reached the first stretch, a line of massive zero-pointer robots loomed into view. Their glowing red eyes and thunderous steps sent shockwaves through the ground.
Aiden grinned mischievously, his hands glowing faintly as he activated Royal Reality. "Time to make this interesting."
With a wave of his hand, the ground beneath him shimmered and shifted. A large, golden platform materialized under his feet, lifting him high above the chaos. The other students were left scrambling as the robots began their assault.
Shoto was the first to act, freezing the legs of a nearby robot and causing it to topple over, creating a temporary barrier for others to navigate. Bakugo soared into the air, blasting one of the robots in the chest with a fiery explosion. Meanwhile, Momo Yaoyorozu created a cannon to fire smoke bombs, disorienting another robot.
Aiden, from his elevated position, flicked his fingers casually. "Let's spice things up."
The golden platform suddenly tilted, sending a wave of sparkling energy that nudged a robot directly into Bakugo's path.
"DAMN YOU, FRITZ!" Bakugo yelled, narrowly avoiding the metallic arm swinging at him.
Laughing, Aiden jumped down from his platform as the horde of robots began to dwindle. He landed gracefully, using his quirk to create a soft cushion beneath him, and sprinted ahead.
By the time the others broke through, Aiden had already taken a significant lead.
The Second Obstacle: The Fall of Doom
The next challenge was a precarious canyon filled with unstable, narrow columns acting as stepping stones. Below, a bottomless void stretched into darkness, or so it seemed.
"Looks like I'll have to get creative," Aiden muttered.
As he reached the edge of the canyon, he summoned shimmering golden platforms, effortlessly leaping from one to the next. Behind him, Todoroki froze a path across the pillars, gliding smoothly while his competitors struggled to maintain their balance.
Bakugo blasted himself across with controlled explosions, his momentum carrying him from one platform to the next.
Meanwhile, the less athletic students struggled. Mineta was stuck halfway, throwing his sticky orbs to stabilize the columns, while Kaminari accidentally short-circuited one of the supports with a poorly timed electric burst, causing it to crumble.
Aiden turned briefly to see the chaos and smiled. "Don't fall now!" he shouted, his voice carrying a teasing edge.
"SHUT UP!" Bakugo roared from a distance, closing the gap.
The Third Obstacle: The Minefield
The final stretch of the race was a vast minefield. Brightly colored warning signs marked the location of the mines, but their placement was so erratic that it was impossible to avoid them entirely.
Aiden slowed for a moment, analyzing the field. "Alright, time to give them a show."
With a dramatic wave of his hand, a shimmering path of golden bridges appeared, floating just above the ground. Aiden began sprinting across them, avoiding the mines entirely while leaving his competitors to navigate the treacherous terrain.
Todoroki narrowed his eyes and used his ice to freeze sections of the minefield, creating a safer path for himself. Bakugo, on the other hand, opted for brute force, detonating the mines in his path to create a clear route.
The explosions sent shockwaves through the air, knocking some students off balance. Ashido and Kirishima worked together, Ashido using her acid to dissolve obstacles while Kirishima shielded her from debris with his hardened form.
Meanwhile, Aiden was nearing the finish line. Turning back briefly, he saw Bakugo gaining on him.
"You're not winning this!" Bakugo shouted, propelling himself forward with a powerful blast.
"Oh, really?" Aiden smirked and clapped his hands. The shimmering path behind him flickered and disappeared, leaving Bakugo to navigate the unstable ground on his own.
"YOU'LL PAY FOR THIS, FRITZ!"
The Finish Line
With one final burst of energy, Aiden crossed the finish line, raising his arms triumphantly as the crowd erupted in cheers. He turned just in time to see Todoroki glide across, taking second place, followed closely by a seething Bakugo in third.
The rest of the students trickled in, each showing their determination. Momo claimed fourth, followed by Iida in fifth and Ashido in sixth. Kaminari and Kirishima barely made it within the cutoff, securing their places in the next round.
As the dust settled, Midnight took the stage again.
"What an electrifying start to the festival!" she exclaimed. "Our top three are Aiden Fritz, Shoto Todoroki, and Katsuki Bakugo! Let's give them a round of applause!"
The crowd roared in approval, and Aiden took a mock bow, reveling in the attention. Bakugo, still fuming, stomped over to him.
"You think this is funny, huh?" Bakugo growled.
"Very," Aiden replied with a grin.
Shoto walked past them, his expression calm but his eyes betraying a hint of annoyance. "This isn't over yet."
"Of course not," Aiden said. "The fun's just beginning."
The stage was set for the next event, and the excitement in the air was palpable.
Aiden could feel the weight of the competition, but he was ready to face whatever came next with his usual confidence and flair.

The crowd erupted in cheers as the results of the obstacle race flashed across the giant screens. Aiden Fritz's name stood proudly in the number-one spot, followed by Shoto Todoroki in second place and Katsuki Bakugo in third. The buzz of excitement from the spectators filled the stadium, and commentary about the race poured in from all corners, including the VIP booth where two royal families sat.
Eleanor Fritz, seated elegantly beside her husband Maximilian, beamed with pride. "That's my boy!" she announced loudly, her voice ringing out even among the chatter in the booth.
Seraphina laughed at her mother's enthusiasm, clapping alongside her. "He really does love showing off."
Emperor Hiroshi nodded in agreement. "Your son has a natural charisma, Lady Eleanor. His performance was nothing short of remarkable."
"Yes," Empress Aiko chimed in, her voice soft but warm, "his abilities are extraordinary. It's no wonder the entire stadium is captivated."
The young Prince Daiki leaned forward, his eyes alight with curiosity. "He's really cool! Do you think he'll win the whole festival?"
"Of course, he will!" Eleanor declared confidently.
The Emperor chuckled at her unwavering faith. "I admire your confidence, Lady Eleanor. It seems your son inherited it in spades."
Meanwhile, down on the field, Midnight strode onto the stage with her signature dramatic flair.
"What an incredible race to kick things off!" she exclaimed, cracking her whip for effect. "But don't get too comfortable, everyone. The fun has only just begun!"
The students, still catching their breath from the obstacle race, exchanged curious glances as they waited for the next announcement.
"For our next event," Midnight continued, her voice filled with excitement, "we're taking a break from the high-stakes competition for something a bit more lighthearted—a giant Tug of War!"
The crowd cheered wildly, clearly enjoying the unexpected twist.
"This will be a non-qualifying game," Midnight explained. "It's all about teamwork, strategy, and maybe just a little bit of brute strength. And don't worry—our ropes are reinforced with Quirk-resistant fibers, so feel free to go all out!"
The giant screen above displayed the rules: students would be divided into randomized teams, each consisting of eight members. The goal was simple: pull the opposing team's rope across the marked line within a two-minute time limit. If no winner emerged after two minutes, the match would end in a draw.
As teams were quickly formed and the massive ropes were brought onto the field, the stadium buzzed with anticipation.
