Chapter 6: Obstacle Race
The stadium buzzed with an electrifying energy as thousands of spectators filled the seats, their chatter forming an indistinct hum over the vast arena. The air was crisp, the morning sun casting a golden hue over the grounds, signaling the beginning of the first game of the U.A. Sports Festival: the Obstacle Race.
In the heart of the arena, the students of Class 1-B stood in a cluster, their vibrant U.A. sports uniforms contrasting against the sand-colored track ahead. The tension was palpable. Faces reflected a mix of determination, nervousness, and excitement.
"Alright, everyone," Monoma Neito began, his confident voice cutting through the nervous murmurs. He stood tall, his blonde hair gleaming under the sunlight. His eyes scanned the group as he spoke, his tone unwavering. "The key to overcoming this obstacle isn't brute strength or individual heroics. It's teamwork. Remember, our goal isn't to claim the top spots. What we want is for every single member of Class B to qualify for the next round. Together, we can do this."
The students nodded, some visibly reassured, others still lost in their own thoughts. Ibara Shiozaki whispered a quiet prayer under her breath, her vines swaying gently. Nearby, Itsuka Kendo's emerald-green eyes flicked toward Monoma.
He could easily copy a quirk like super-speed to dominate this race, she mused, her gaze narrowing slightly. But he's choosing not to. He genuinely wants all of us to succeed as a team. His loyalty to our class is admirable… even if his disdain for Class A remains unmatched.
A hush fell over the stadium as Midnight raised her hand, the flag in her grasp trembling slightly in the breeze. Her crimson lips curled into a teasing smile, her eyes scanning the eager faces of the participants.
"Get ready!" she announced, her voice echoing through the arena.
From the announcer's booth, Present Mic's voice came alive, though softer than usual, building anticipation. "Ladies and gentlemen, the first event is about to begin! Feel that tension, that energy! The future heroes of U.A. are seconds away from making their move!"
The spectators held their breath. The students leaned forward, muscles tensed, as the flag dropped.
"BEGIN!" Midnight's voice rang like a bell of liberation.
The massive gate at the start of the track swung open, revealing the narrow passage that led into the first challenge. Dust swirled in the air as hundreds of feet sprang into motion. The rumble of pounding footsteps filled the arena, mingling with the deafening roar of the crowd.
"IT'S ON!" Present Mic shouted, his enthusiasm contagious.
The passage quickly became a bottleneck. Students jostled and shoved, each trying to carve a path forward. The narrowness of the corridor was the first obstacle, testing their ability to navigate through sheer chaos.
Among the chaos, Monoma remained calm, his sharp gaze observing every movement. "Stick together!" he barked to his classmates. "Stay close and don't use your quirks for selfish gains. We'll make it through as a team!"
Behind them, within the throng of Class 1-A, Todoroki Shoto's heterochromatic eyes gleamed with quiet resolve. His right hand glowed with icy mist as he touched the ground. Cold air radiated outward, frosting over the floor beneath the stampede.
"So this is how they plan to thin out the competition," he murmured, his breath visible in the chilling air. His hair shimmered as he continued, "It's not just a race; it's a test of resilience and strategy."
The frost surged forward, spreading rapidly. Students gasped as the ground beneath them turned slick with ice. Walls and ceilings became encased in a crystalline sheen, making every step treacherous.
At the far end of the passage, where the icy wind spilled into the open arena, Todoroki emerged first. His steps were deliberate, his breath steady. "Apologies," he said flatly, glancing back at the frozen chaos behind him. "I'll be going ahead now."
The corridor was in disarray. Many students were trapped, their feet slipping on the glassy surface. Some managed to keep moving, using quirks or sheer willpower to press on.
Back in the thick of the congestion, Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu turned to Monoma, frustration etched on his metallic face. "What now, Monoma? Our feet are frozen in this mess!"
All eyes in Class 1-B turned to Monoma, their collective hope resting on his shoulders. Some could escape individually, but they hesitated, unwilling to abandon the plan.
Monoma's gaze darted around. The ice was unyielding, and there was no one nearby with a fire-based quirk to counter it. He locked eyes with Tetsutetsu, determination hardening his features.
"Touch my head," Monoma commanded, bringing his head closer to his friend.
Tetsutetsu blinked in confusion but complied. As Monoma absorbed his quirk, his body began to take on a metallic sheen. Turning to the others, he announced, "Follow Tetsutetsu's lead. I'll clear the way with him!"
Tetsutetsu grinned, slamming his fists together after his skin became metallic. "Got it! Let's do this!"
"NOW!" Monoma shouted.
The two metal-clad figures raised their right feet simultaneously, smashing them down onto the ice with thunderous force. The ground groaned as cracks spiderwebbed through the frozen surface. The corridor trembled, walls fracturing under the immense impact. Dust rained down from the ceiling as the ice shattered in jagged fragments.
Itsuka Kendo's brows furrowed in concern as she glanced at the shaking walls. "We've broken free from the ice, but are you sure this place won't collapse on us?"
Monoma turned to her, a metallic smirk on his face. "Don't worry. U.A. structures are built to withstand more than this."
Ahead of them, Tetsutetsu barreled forward, his steel body plowing through the congested crowd like a wrecking ball. The students of Class 1-B followed closely behind, their morale bolstered by Monoma's unwavering leadership.
