Chapter 09: The Results Are In
The sun had started its slow descent, casting an amber glow over the UA Academy sports field. The students stood scattered across the grounds, their faces a mosaic of exhaustion and anticipation. The physical tests had concluded, and the air buzzed with unspoken tension.
Trafalgar Law leaned casually against a bench near the edge of the field. His athletic uniform, dark blue with white stripes, bore the scuffs and marks of the day's rigorous activities. His signature black-and-white knit cap, adorned with jagged patterns, sat snugly on his head, slightly tilted to one side. Gray eyes, as calm and detached as ever, surveyed the scene.
While Law had performed admirably in the race—securing first place by a fraction of a second over Tenya Iida—his results in the other tests were unremarkable. His scores were consistently average, a deliberate choice. He wasn't here to shine, not entirely. He was here to observe, to enjoy the absurdity of this new world.
At the center of the field, clusters of students murmured among themselves. Kaminari's carefree grin was gone, replaced by a nervous twitch as his golden eyes darted toward the scoreboard that had yet to display the results. Eijiro Kirishima, usually brimming with unshakable confidence, rubbed the back of his neck, his red hair glinting under the fading sunlight. Even Minoru Mineta, usually too preoccupied with inappropriate thoughts to care about much else, seemed on edge, his beady eyes darting nervously.
For these students, the threat of expulsion loomed like a dark cloud. Those who hadn't excelled in at least one test feared the worst.
A few feet away, Midoriya Izuku stood apart from the others, clutching his right hand with his left. His index finger was swollen, the skin discolored and taut from the strain of using One for All earlier. His green eyes were wide with worry, his freckles standing out against his pale face.
Law's gaze drifted toward the trembling boy. He studied the grotesque state of Midoriya's finger with a detached curiosity. It looks painful even from here, he thought, his lips curling slightly in distaste. His eyes flickered to his own hands, pale and unmarred, before he adjusted his grip on the brim of his hat. This is why I chose a manageable ability. If I'd ended up with something like One for All, I'd be spending every moment swallowing pain instead of enjoying myself. I'm not here to change the world or endure agony. I'm here for the thrill of it.
Aizawa Shouta stood at the head of the group, his tired eyes scanning the students. His voice, monotone but firm, cut through the murmurs. "I'll be displaying the final rankings as a cumulative score. I won't show individual test results. Get ready."
The tension reached its peak. Law glanced around, taking in the anxious faces of his classmates. Kaminari clenched his fists, Mineta bit his lip, and Kirishima muttered something under his breath. Even Bakugo Katsuki, who radiated confidence like a furnace, seemed impatient.
The screen materialized in the air, a shimmering holographic display. The names and rankings began to appear.
Katsuki Bakugo
Shoto Todoroki
Trafalgar Law
Tenya Iida
Momo Yaoyorozu
A collective sigh of relief rippled through the crowd. Bakugo's red eyes gleamed with triumph as his lips curled into a wide grin. He turned his head slightly, locking eyes with Law and Todoroki. There was something smug in his gaze, an unspoken declaration of superiority.
Todoroki, half his body still frosted over from an earlier test, met Bakugo's fiery stare with an icy calm. He turned away without a word, his thoughts hidden behind a mask of indifference. He's celebrating as though these results mean anything. Someone like him won't understand the bigger picture.
Law smirked, tilting his head back slightly as he spoke under his breath. "Better than I expected."
Yaoyorozu, her black eyes thoughtful, lingered on Law's name. Third place... she mused silently. And that's with a 30-point deduction from Aizawa-sensei before the tests even began. Without it, he would have been ten points ahead of Bakugo. Trafalgar Law is the real winner here.
Not far away, Ochako Uraraka's gaze shifted to Midoriya. His name was at the very bottom of the list—20th place. His face was pale, his eyes unfocused.
"He's terrified..." Uraraka murmured, her chest tightening with sympathy. Midoriya closed his eyes, bracing himself for the inevitable judgment.
Aizawa's voice broke the silence. "By the way, the expulsion threat was a lie. It was a motivational tool to ensure you all gave your best effort."
A beat of silence. Then—
"WHAT?!"
The students erupted in disbelief and outrage.
Yaoyorozu crossed her arms, her expression unbothered. "If you'd thought about it logically, you'd have realized he couldn't expel us over this."
Aizawa's gaze lingered on her for a moment, his usual disinterest giving way to the faintest flicker of approval. "All right, that's enough for today. Dismissed."
The students began to file toward the academy's main building, their complaints mingling with laughter and relief.
As the crowd thinned, Aizawa's voice called out. "Trafalgar Law."
Law stopped in his tracks, turning with practiced calm. "What is it, sensei?"
Aizawa gestured for him to come closer. "Give me your phone number. Your specialized training begins tonight."
Law reached into his pocket, retrieving his phone. "Specialized training? Are we taking down some powerful villain?"
Aizawa's eyes narrowed slightly. "Your ability is better suited for support than direct combat. If you were paired with All Might in a fight against a major threat, your combined strength would render the enemy powerless."
Before Law could reply, a booming voice cut through the quiet.
"Sounds fascinating!"
All Might appeared seemingly out of nowhere, his massive hand clapping both Law and Aizawa on the shoulders. His towering frame radiated energy, his yellow and blue suit gleaming under the evening light. His trademark smile was as bright as ever.
Law's gray eyes widened, his composure faltering. I didn't even sense him... How long has he been standing there?
Aizawa sighed, his irritation evident. "Why don't you mind your own business, All Might?"
All Might's grin only widened. "How can I, when you're giving one student such special attention? I'm curious about this young man who's caught your eye."
Aizawa's gaze remained steady. "You'll understand when the time comes." He turned and began walking away. "Law, head back inside."
Law hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Understood, sensei."
All Might watched them leave, his grin never wavering. "You're no fun, Eraserhead," he chuckled, his voice carrying on the breeze.
