Chapter 68: The Snowfall Walk (68)
The first snow of the year began in the early hours of the morning, transforming the small town into a glistening wonderland. Haruto woke to the soft glow of sunlight reflecting off the snow outside his window. He stared out, mesmerized by the way the fresh blanket of white covered the streets, rooftops, and trees. It was a Saturday, which meant no school and plenty of time to enjoy the magic of the snow.
Aiko called him shortly after breakfast. "Haruto! Have you seen outside? It's perfect!" Her voice brimmed with excitement.
Haruto smiled. "Yeah, it's beautiful. Want to go for a walk?"
"Absolutely," she replied without hesitation. "Let's meet at the park entrance in twenty minutes!"
Haruto layered up with a thick coat, scarf, and gloves, then grabbed a woolen hat on his way out the door. The cold air hit him as he stepped outside, but it was invigorating. The snow crunched softly under his boots as he made his way to the park.
Aiko was already there, bundled in a pale blue coat and a matching knitted hat. Her cheeks were rosy from the cold, and she held her gloved hands close to her face, trying to keep warm.
"You're late," she teased, her breath visible in the frosty air.
"I'm right on time," Haruto countered with a grin.
"Come on," she said, grabbing his arm. "Let's explore before the snow gets ruined by footprints."
The park was a winter wonderland. The trees were heavy with snow, their branches sagging under its weight. Aiko and Haruto walked along the main path, their eyes taking in the shimmering beauty around them. Every now and then, Aiko would pause to marvel at the icicles hanging from a branch or to catch a snowflake on her glove.
"This feels like a scene out of a storybook," she said, spinning around in delight.
Haruto chuckled. "You really love snow, don't you?"
"Of course! It's like the world slows down and everything feels peaceful," she replied, her eyes bright.
As they continued walking, Aiko spotted a small pond, its surface frozen and glistening. "Look at that!" she exclaimed, running ahead. She crouched by the edge, examining the ice closely.
Haruto joined her. "Think it's safe to walk on?"
"Not yet," Aiko said, shaking her head. "It's probably too thin. But it's so pretty!"
The pair ventured deeper into the park, where the paths were less traveled, and the snow remained untouched. Aiko suddenly stopped and knelt down, scooping up a handful of snow.
"Haruto," she said sweetly, "catch!"
Before he could react, she tossed the snowball at him, hitting him square in the shoulder. She burst out laughing as Haruto brushed the snow off his coat.
"Alright, you asked for it!" he said, quickly gathering snow for his own snowball.
The peaceful walk turned into an impromptu snowball fight, their laughter echoing through the park. Haruto managed to land a hit on Aiko's back, and she retaliated by pelting him with smaller, faster snowballs.
After a while, they both collapsed onto a nearby bench, breathless and giggling.
"You're pretty good at that," Haruto admitted, adjusting his hat.
"I've had years of practice," Aiko said proudly.
As the afternoon wore on, the sky began to clear, and the sun peeked through the clouds, casting a golden glow over the snow-covered park. Haruto and Aiko found a secluded trail that led to a hill overlooking the town. The view was breathtaking, with the snow-dusted rooftops and distant mountains creating a postcard-perfect scene.
Aiko sighed contentedly. "I wish days like this could last forever."
Haruto glanced at her, noticing the way her eyes reflected the light. "Yeah, it's pretty amazing," he said softly.
They stood in comfortable silence for a moment before Aiko spoke again. "You know, there's something magical about snow. It's like it brings people closer together."
Haruto nodded. "Maybe it's because it slows everything down and makes you appreciate the little things."
Aiko smiled. "Exactly."
On their way back, they passed by a small playground where children were building snowmen and sliding down makeshift snow ramps. Aiko's eyes lit up.
"Let's build one too!" she said, pulling Haruto toward an open patch of snow.
Together, they worked on their snowman, rolling large snowballs for the body and head. Haruto found some sticks for arms, while Aiko used small pebbles for the eyes and mouth. She pulled a red scarf from her bag to wrap around the snowman's neck, giving it a final touch of personality.
"Perfect," Aiko declared, stepping back to admire their creation.
"It's missing something," Haruto said, placing a tiny pinecone on its head like a hat.
They both laughed, proud of their work.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, painting the snow in hues of orange and pink, Haruto and Aiko made their way home. The cold air nipped at their noses, but the warmth of their friendship kept them cozy.
"Thanks for today," Aiko said as they reached her house. "It was perfect."
Haruto smiled. "Anytime."
As he turned to leave, Aiko called out, "Next time it snows, we're building an even bigger snowman!"
Haruto waved. "Deal."
And with that, they parted ways, their footprints in the snow a reminder of a day filled with laughter, magic, and memories that would last a lifetime.
