Chapter 69: New Year’s Eve (70)
The town buzzed with excitement as the final day of the year approached. Streets were illuminated with colorful lanterns, and every house was adorned with twinkling lights. The crisp winter air carried the scent of roasted chestnuts and warm tea, adding to the festive charm. For Haruto and Aiko, New Year's Eve was a tradition—a time to reflect, celebrate, and make promises for the future.
Haruto arrived at Aiko's house just as the evening sky began to darken. She greeted him at the door, her cheeks pink from the cold, wrapped in a fluffy scarf. "You're late," she teased, though her smile showed she wasn't upset.
"Blame the snow," Haruto replied, shaking off the frost from his coat. "Ready to go?"
Aiko nodded, grabbing a small bag. "Let's make it to the shrine before the crowd gets too big!"
The shrine, nestled at the top of a hill, was already bustling with activity. Vendors lined the path, selling everything from sweet dango to handmade charms. The air was filled with laughter, and children ran around with sparklers in their hands.
Aiko paused at one of the stalls, her eyes lighting up at the sight of colorful charms. "Look, Haruto! These are for good luck in studies," she said, holding up a charm shaped like a tiny book.
"You should get one," Haruto suggested.
She nodded, purchasing the charm and slipping it into her bag. "What about you? Don't you want one for good luck in... something?" she teased, nudging him playfully.
Haruto grinned. "I don't need luck when I've got you nagging me to do my best."
Aiko rolled her eyes but laughed, the sound blending with the festive noise around them.
As they reached the shrine, the two joined the line to ring the large bronze bell. It was tradition to make a wish for the new year while the sound of the bell echoed through the night.
When it was finally their turn, Aiko closed her eyes, her hands clasped together. Haruto couldn't help but watch her for a moment, wondering what she was wishing for. She looked so peaceful, standing there under the glow of the lanterns.
When she opened her eyes, she caught him staring. "What?" she asked, tilting her head.
"Nothing," Haruto said quickly, looking away. He stepped forward and rang the bell himself, making a silent wish: May we always stay this close.
After their visit to the shrine, they wandered back down the hill to the town square, where a large clock tower stood. The square was crowded with people, all eagerly awaiting the countdown to midnight. Aiko pulled Haruto toward a vendor selling hot cocoa, handing him a steaming cup.
"To keep us warm," she said with a smile.
They found a spot near the clock tower, where they could see the fireworks that would light up the sky at midnight. As they sipped their cocoa, they talked about their favorite moments of the year: the festivals they attended, the secrets they shared, and the memories they made together.
"What's your New Year's resolution?" Aiko asked, looking up at Haruto.
He thought for a moment. "I guess... to be a better friend to you. To always be there when you need me."
Aiko's eyes softened. "You're already the best friend I could ever ask for."
Haruto felt his face heat up and quickly changed the subject. "What about you?"
Aiko hesitated, her gaze drifting to the sky. "I want to keep drawing. To capture every moment that matters to me."
Haruto smiled. "You'll be great at it. You always are."
As the clock neared midnight, the crowd grew louder, their excitement infectious. Aiko and Haruto stood side by side, their breaths visible in the frosty air. When the countdown began, everyone joined in, their voices echoing through the square.
"Ten, nine, eight..."
Haruto glanced at Aiko, who was looking up at the clock, her face glowing in the light.
"...three, two, one!"
The crowd erupted in cheers as the clock struck midnight, and the sky exploded with fireworks. Brilliant colors painted the night, reflecting in Aiko's wide eyes.
"It's beautiful," she whispered.
Haruto nodded, but his attention was on her rather than the fireworks. "Yeah, it really is."
Aiko turned to him, her cheeks pink not just from the cold. "Thank you, Haruto. For everything."
Before he could respond, she reached out and took his hand, her fingers warm against his.
"Happy New Year," she said softly.
Haruto felt his heart skip a beat. "Happy New Year, Aiko."
As the fireworks continued to light up the sky, Haruto and Aiko stood there, hand in hand, silently promising that the coming year would be just as special as the ones they had shared before.
