Chapter 43: stay
"I can't believe we took everything from the mall," Saya said, still trying to wrap her head around the experience.
"Me too," Saeko agreed, her eyes briefly on Kakashi as he returned with cans of cola.
"Here, take this," he said, handing one to each of them before turning his attention to the news broadcast.
"Many are speculating this is the result of biological weapons. Famous cities like London and Los Angeles are already overrun with the undead," the anchor reported.
Hearing it, Saya commented, "That's the most plausible explanation."
"But why would someone do something like that?" Saeko asked, her voice tinged with unease.
"That's an easy question," Kakashi said, taking a sip from his can. He continued calmly, "To control the world. If it's intentional, once the undead have overrun everything, the ones responsible can swoop in and take over. Since the attack happened worldwide simultaneously, it must have been planned. They might even have an antidote to turn zombies back into humans."
Saya, hearing this, muttered, "They must be some really high-level people. Someone with immense wealth and power to pull this off and a lot of people working under them to make it happen."
Kakashi took a sip of his cola and replied casually, "Well, there's another world where a company tried to evolve humanity, and it resulted in a zombie apocalypse. The dangers there were far worse compared to this or so it seems, at least from what I've seen here."
He turned to them, "Did you call your parents?"
Saeko hesitated before answering, "His number isn't reachable."
"My mom's safe at home," Saya said, trying to mask her worry.
Kakashi nodded, then shifted his focus to Saeko. "Have you made your decision?"
Saeko knew what he meant. Following him meant abandoning the familiar for something dangerous and uncertain. If things went wrong, there'd be no one to turn to.
After a moment of silence, she met his gaze and said firmly, "Yes. I'm coming with you."
"Good," Kakashi said simply. "Now there are three people I can count on."
Saya looked at Saeko, realizing that her father would not be coming with them. Although curious, she chose not to ask and instead focused on Kakashi. "You're really not bringing anyone else?"
"No," Kakashi replied. "Sometimes, fewer people means fewer problems. It's better to trust a small, capable group than a large, chaotic one."
Throwing the can, Kakashi made a hand sign, summoning five shadow clones with a burst of smoke.
Saeko and Saya stared in surprise, unable to hide their expressions. While both had seen his abilities through the illusions before, witnessing it in reality was a completely different experience.
"Take this," Kakashi said, handing them each a scroll.
The clones disappeared in flashes, scattering to their tasks. They will be collecting everything useful from house to shops .
"What are they doing?" Saya asked, still processing what she'd seen.
"They're collecting everything we need," Kakashi explained casually.
Saeko glanced at the scroll in her hand, gripping it tightly. "Efficient."
"Let's go," Kakashi said, moving out.
"Where are we going?" Saeko asked, stopping a zombie with her katana Kakashi gave her.
"Somewhere to spend the night," he replied, heading toward the car.
"Do you know how to drive?" Saya asked as they arrived.
"Yes," he answered, breaking the window and unlocking the door.
"Get in," he said, taking the driver's seat.
As Saya sat in the back, she watched him fiddling with some wires.
"Do you know how to do that too?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, I do," he replied, starting the engine.
"All set. Let's go."
He drove the car, paying no attention to the zombies approaching.
"You seem good at this," Saeko commented.
Ignoring the compliment, he handed them a book.
"Read this."
Both glanced at the book, the title reading WILL OF FIRE.
"What's this about?" Saya asked, flipping through the pages.
"You'll find out if you read," he replied, focused on the road ahead.
As time passed, Saeko observed, "It's like training for warriors."
Saya immediately commented, "Although the idea is good, it's only useful if it's properly implemented. I think it's more like brainwashing."
Kakashi nodded, "It is. Children, starting from ages 4 or 5, were taught this before they could graduate. It's one of the many policies implemented to make shinobi loyal to their village."
"You too?" Saya asked, looking at him through the rearview mirror.
"Yes," Kakashi replied. "I was taught the same, though I graduated early. Didn't give them a chance."
"Why did you graduate early?"
Kakashi stopped the car. "I was ready to take the risk."
"Let's go before they come near," he said, opening the car door.
Looking out, Saya followed him, and Saeko quickly left the seat as well.
"How did you find this place? It looks like someone rich lives here," Saya said, noting the size but not too shocked given her background.
"Just a spy job," Kakashi replied, entering the house and locking the door, which Saeko did.
This is Rika and Shizuka's place, from the anime. He planned to use it to rest for the night.
"We'll leave for Saya's house tomorrow," Kakashi said. "You should take a bath and change into clean clothes."
