Chapter 8: How To Live 1
I was running through the forest, a bow on my back, darting between the trees at high speed.
Despite stumbling and my breath coming in gasps, I kept running for my life.
"How did this happen?! How did this happen?!"
I screamed as I ran, a pack of wolves chasing me, eager to tear me to pieces.
How did I end up in this situation? Let's go back an hour earlier.
(One hour earlier)
"Huh, do you mean that guard was the one who informed the criminals about me?"
"Yes."
Garoun replied coldly.
"Damn him! Let's go back and teach him a lesson."
"How will you teach him a lesson?"
Garoun asked me this odd question, and I answered immediately.
"Of course, you and I can do it."
I answered confidently.
"That's not true. I can do it, but you..."
Garoun looked at me with a look that said everything.
"Fine, don't help me. I'll do it myself."
"How will you defeat him? Do you know his power level? Do you know how you will defeat him? Do you know who's behind him?"
"Huh? No, I don't know any of that."
"Then be quiet and don't get into a fight you don't know how to win or gain anything from."
Before I could respond, Garoun said this, making me feel foolish.
'Yes, what will I gain if I fight him? I'll end up defeated and gain nothing but his enmity.'
"But..."
"I know you want revenge, but everything in its time, right?"
"Okay, I understand."
And suddenly, a question popped into my head.
"Then why did you save me, Jaron? You didn't gain anything from that fight."
"Who said I didn't gain anything? Look at this."
In response to my question, Garoun pulled out a beautiful blue ring with some incomprehensible engravings on it.
"What is this ring? Is it valuable or something?"
As I examined the ring, I asked him this question, and instead of answering, he showed me directly.
Suddenly, from nowhere, a bow and a quiver filled with arrows appeared.
I remembered the man Garoun fought last night and understood his point.
"So this ring is a storage device. That's how he pulled out his sword last night."
"Yes, this ring is a storage device. That's what I gained from saving you."
"How does this ring work? How much can it hold? What's the weight limit?"
I bombarded Garoun with questions out of curiosity and amazement at this ring that defies all my concepts of physics.
"Firstly, this ring works by infusing it with mana. Secondly, it can hold about 100 square meters. Thirdly, there is no weight limit."
Garoun answered my questions calmly, but one word bothered me and I didn't understand it.
"Mana? What is that?"
"Mana is the energy found in all living beings and even plants have mana."
"Wow! So even I have mana, right?"
"Of course."
"So how do I use it?"
"Sit down first."
I followed Garoun instructions and sat down on the grass immediately.
"Try to sense the energy in your body. It will be distributed throughout your body, so gather it in your heart."
I followed Garoun instructions and began to sense the mana.
(Half an hour later)
"Is it supposed to take this long? I can't feel anything."
"No, you should feel it right away. Let me check."
Garoun placed his hand on my back and began to check. After a short while, he spoke with amazement, which I heard for the first time.
"What is this? This is strange. This is the first time I've seen something like this."
"What is it?"
"You don't have a speck of mana in your body."
"What? Why?"
"I don't know, but there's a legend that there were one or two people in ancient times who were born without a speck of mana."
'So I don't have mana. I think this is because I came from a modern world that doesn't have this energy. But this body is from this world, so why don't I have it?'
"Okay, we can't do anything about that. So, instead of mana, I'll strengthen your body. You'll train to get a body that makes up for your lack of mana. Is that clear?"
"Yes, sir!"
I stood up immediately upon hearing Garoun words. Despite lacking something that would have helped me a lot, there's nothing I can do about it.
"Alright, what will we do?"
I asked Garoun what we would do next, but instead of answering, he handed me the bow and quiver filled with arrows.
I wore the quiver, took the bow, and looked at Jaron.
"What's next?"
"Now, run."
"What? I don't understand."
"Run with all your might to stay alive."
And as he said that, Garoun cut my hand with a dagger he had, which surprised me.
"Ouch! Why did you cut my hand?"
But he didn't answer me; he looked ahead and pointed north. So I looked in the direction he was pointing and understood why he told me to run.
There was a pack of wolves looking our way, drooling eagerly, ready to take a bite out of me.
So like any sane person, I started running to survive.
(The present time)
So that's what led me to my current situation.
"Use the bow on your back. It's not just for decoration."
Garoun yelled at me as he ran ahead of me. 'How did he get in front? He was behind me a moment ago.'
I thought as I looked at Jaron, who was now ahead of me.
'It doesn't matter. I need to use the bow, but if I stop now, I might kill one of the wolves, but the rest will pounce on me. So I have to do it the right way.'
I looked back and counted the number of wolves behind me.
'Two, four, six. There are six wolves. Good, now I need to find a place where I can shoot them without getting hit.'
'I'm running in a forest with only trees, so...'
I headed towards a tree in front of me and climbed it quickly.
Inhale! Exhale! Inhale! Exhale!
"Hah, now you are the prey."
I smiled as I looked at the wolves eager to kill me.
