Chapter 30: Lena, The Brave Girl
After their indulgence at the food market, the trio made their way to the nearby city garden. The sun had mellowed into a gentle warmth, casting long shadows across the cobblestone paths as they walked under the canopy of trees. The garden was sprawling, filled with colorful flowerbeds, neatly trimmed hedges, and small ponds that reflected the sky like glass. Birds chirped overhead, and the air smelled faintly of blooming jasmine.
Jack, Samantha, and Lena strolled along the path, their earlier energy from the market still buzzing but softened by the serene surroundings.
"Ah, this place is perfect," Lena sighed, stretching her arms above her head. She was still practically skipping with every step, the lingering sugar high from the ice cream rolls evident in her springy movements. Her blonde hair bobbed with each bounce, catching the sunlight and making her look even more lively.
Samantha, who walked calmly beside her, gave a contented smile. "It is peaceful. After all that food, I think a walk here is exactly what we needed." Her purple hair swayed gently as she moved.
The garden was beautiful, much more than Jack expected.
"You guys really know your way around this city," Jack commented, hands casually tucked in his pockets. "I'm still getting used to it all."
Lena grinned and playfully bumped his shoulder. "Stick with us, newbie. We'll show you all the best places. Right, Sam?"
Samantha gave a soft chuckle. "We do have a lot more to show you. This is just the beginning, Jack."
As they continued walking, the path led them to a wide, open space in the garden. A large circular fountain stood in the middle, surrounded by stone benches and vibrant patches of wildflowers. There weren't many people around, just a few couples strolling hand-in-hand and an elderly man feeding the birds by the pond. It was the perfect spot for them to relax and enjoy the rest of their afternoon.
"Let's sit here," Lena declared, practically diving onto one of the benches. She sprawled out dramatically, her blonde ponytail falling over the edge as she stretched her arms and legs. "Ugh, I'm so full. I can't believe we ate that giant pretzel."
Jack and Samantha joined her, though with a bit more grace. Samantha sat beside Lena, her legs crossed delicately, while Jack took a seat on the other end of the bench, resting his hands behind his head as he gazed up at the sky.
"So," Lena said after a moment of silence, "what do you guys want to do now? We're here, it's the weekend, and we're free. What's the plan?"
Samantha leaned back slightly. "Honestly, I'm happy just relaxing here. It's nice to take a break after all that walking and eating."
Lena sat up suddenly, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I've got an idea. Since we're all here and it's such a chill day… why don't we play a game?"
Jack raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "A game? What kind of game?"
Lena's grin widened. "Truth or Dare."
Jack blinked. Of course Lena would suggest something like that. "Truth or Dare? Isn't that a bit… middle school?"
Samantha chuckled softly, her lips curving into a small smile. "That's what makes it fun, Jack. Besides, it's Lena's favorite way to stir up trouble."
Lena gave a mock innocent look, batting her eyelashes. "Trouble? Me? Never. Come on, it'll be fun. What else are we going to do—sit here in silence?"
Jack sighed, but the grin tugging at his lips gave him away. "Alright, fine. I'll play. But you better not make me do anything too crazy."
Lena clapped her hands together in excitement. "Yes! Okay, I'll go first. I'll ask…" Her eyes darted between Jack and Samantha, finally settling on Samantha. "Sam, truth or dare?"
Samantha's violet eyes gleamed with amusement as she considered her options. "Truth."
Lena pouted a little. "Boring, but okay. Let me think…" She tapped her chin theatrically before leaning forward. "Alright, Sam. If you had to live on a deserted island with just one of us, who would you choose—me or Jack?"
Jack raised an eyebrow, curious to hear the answer. Samantha, ever composed, gave a soft laugh. "That's easy. I'd choose Jack."
Lena gasped dramatically, putting a hand over her heart. "Betrayal! And after all the times I've fed you snacks?"
Samantha smirked. "Jack is resourceful, and I feel like he'd be good company. Besides, you'd get bored after five minutes and probably start trying to build a raft to leave."
Lena giggled. "Okay, fair point. I wouldn't last long on an island." She turned to Jack. "Alright, your turn. Truth or dare?"
Jack thought for a moment, feeling the weight of their gazes. "I'll go with… dare."
Lena's eyes lit up with mischief, and Jack immediately regretted his choice. "Oh, I've got a good one for you. I dare you to go over to that couple by the fountain"—she pointed to a pair sitting a few benches away—"and ask them if they've seen your 'missing ferret.'"
Jack stared at her in disbelief. "A missing ferret? Seriously?"
Lena nodded, grinning wickedly. "Yup. You've got to act all panicked, like you really lost your pet. Come on, it'll be hilarious."
Samantha chuckled, clearly enjoying the prospect. "I'd like to see that."
Jack groaned but knew there was no getting out of it. "Fine."
With an exaggerated sigh, he got up and walked toward the couple, who were sitting close together, quietly talking. As he approached, he put on his best 'concerned pet owner' face.
"Excuse me," he said, trying to sound breathless. "Have you guys seen a ferret around here? He's about this big, brown fur, answers to the name of Mr. Nibbles."
The couple exchanged confused glances. The woman blinked, clearly trying to process the odd question. "A… ferret?"
Jack nodded, maintaining the act. "Yeah, I was walking him earlier, and he must have slipped out of his harness. I've been looking everywhere."
The man frowned, glancing around the garden. "Uh… sorry, man. Haven't seen any ferrets."
Jack let out a fake sigh of disappointment. "Darn. Well, thanks anyway."
He turned and walked back to Lena and Samantha, who were both struggling to contain their laughter. As soon as he sat down, Lena burst out laughing, clutching her stomach.
"Oh my god, Jack, that was amazing. 'Mr. Nibbles'? Where did you come up with that?"
Jack rolled his eyes, though he couldn't help but chuckle. "You're the one who dared me to do it. I had to improvise."
Samantha, still smiling, nodded in approval. "You handled that well. I'm impressed."
Lena wiped a tear from her eye, still giggling. "Okay, okay, your turn, Jack. Ask me!"
Jack thought for a moment, considering his options. Lena was always full of energy and loved a challenge, so he knew he had to come up with something good. "Alright, Lena. Truth or dare?"
Lena, never one to back down, grinned. "Dare, of course!"
Jack smirked, an idea forming. "I dare you to go over to that ice cream vendor and ask for a free sample… but you have to do it while doing the chicken dance."
Samantha raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Now this, I have to see."
Lena's eyes widened, but she quickly recovered, flashing a confident smile. "You're on." She stood up and made her way to the vendor, who was setting up his cart not far from the fountain. As she approached, she took a deep breath and then—without hesitation—began flapping her arms like a chicken, clucking and bobbing her head as she did the full chicken dance.
The vendor stared at her, utterly bewildered, while a few passersby stopped to watch. Jack and Samantha were laughing so hard they could barely breathe.
Lena, never breaking character, clucked a few more times before asking in the most serious voice she could manage, "Can I have a free sample, please?"
The vendor blinked, then, to everyone's surprise, cracked a smile. "Sure. Anyone brave enough to do that deserves a free sample."
He handed her a small scoop of ice cream, and Lena triumphantly strutted back to the bench, still flapping her arms like a chicken. When she sat down, she took a victorious bite of the ice cream, grinning from ear to ear.
"See?" Lena said, licking her spoon. "Nothing can faze me."
Jack and Samantha were still laughing, trying to catch their breath.
After that... They enjoyed the day.
