Chapter 18: Chapter 18

Hell's Kitchen.

The most depraved and filthy place in New York City, perhaps in the entire country—a cesspool of crime and chaos.

The alleys lining the streets were littered with discarded trash, resembling makeshift garbage dumps, their stench polluting the air. Sunken and cracked roads bore scattered, empty bottles and crumpled cans that rolled listlessly in the occasional breeze.

The air reeked of rotting food mixed with strange, unpleasant odors. The environment was dreadful, the streets dilapidated, and law enforcement practically nonexistent. Even New York's police officers avoided the area unless absolutely necessary, their patrols hurried and perfunctory.

Yet this very lawlessness made Hell's Kitchen a haven for criminals. Countless fugitives and lowlifes from across New York sought refuge here, hiding their identities and lying low in its shadows.

The headquarters of "The Giant Ghost" Onik, the Water Ghost Gang's leader, was a graffiti-covered red brick building nestled in the heart of this hellhole.

Inside, the hulking figure of Onik, nearly two meters tall, guzzled beer straight from the can. With a single swig, he emptied the 500-milliliter can before crushing it into a twisted hunk of metal with his massive hand.

The remaining beer dripped down his tattooed arm, pooling on the floor and accentuating the violent atmosphere of the dimly lit room.

Ever since taking on a job from a mysterious benefactor, Onik had felt like everything was falling apart. The mission had failed—he hadn't secured what he was after, had lost several men, and had drawn unwanted attention.

In the days since, the NYPD and city officials had been relentless, constantly breathing down his neck.

As if that wasn't enough, the so-called "gas leak" at the Morning Star Bar—his gang's base of operations—had wiped out most of the Water Ghost Gang's members and leadership.

The losses were devastating. He had to shell out a significant amount of money to placate the families of the deceased or risk the gang fracturing completely.

To make matters worse, rival gangs had begun circling like sharks, eager to carve up the weakened Water Ghost Gang's territory.

When Onik had finally swallowed his pride and reached out to his powerful backer for help, he was met with a barrage of insults.

"Useless idiot!"

The memory of the scolding made Onik's blood boil.

"F*ck..." he growled, slamming his fist into the glass coffee table in front of him.

The sturdy table shattered instantly, shards of glass flying everywhere and leaving cuts on his hands and face.

"Fck! Fck!"

His rage spiraled out of control. Roaring profanities, he began overturning everything within reach, smashing lamps, chairs, and anything else unlucky enough to be nearby.

Outside the room, two gang members stationed at the door exchanged nervous glances as the sounds of destruction continued unabated.

"He's terrifying. How long do you think it'll take for him to calm down?" one muttered, his voice trembling.

"No idea. Let's just hope he doesn't take his anger out on us," the other sighed, clearly uneasy.

Suddenly, one of them sniffed the air. "What's that smell?"

The other perked up, inhaling deeply. "I don't know... but it smells kinda nice. Maybe it's perfume?"

"Perfume? Don't be ridiculous. There's no way there's a woman in this building—"

Before he could finish, his eyes glazed over, and he slumped against the wall, unconscious.

Alarmed, the remaining gang member rushed to his companion, only to collapse as well, succumbing to the effects of a potent hallucinogen.

Moments later, a figure wearing an intricately designed clown mask slipped through a nearby window. Silent and methodical, the masked intruder slit the throats of both men before stabbing each in the heart.

Eren glanced at the vial of custom hallucinogen in his pocket, impressed by its effectiveness.

"Not bad," he murmured.

Using the same strategy, he sprayed the remaining hallucinogen under the door to Onik's room before readying his grandfather's Beretta handgun, chambering a round, and waiting patiently.

The hallucinogen worked quickly. Within minutes, the sounds of Onik's rampage subsided.

After waiting a little longer to ensure the air was less saturated with the drug, Eren carefully opened the door just a crack. Through the gap, he saw the massive figure of Onik sprawled motionless on the couch, his bulk resembling that of a grizzly bear.

Perched silently on Onik's head was the Seeker Origami Crane, its presence confirming that this was indeed the leader of the Water Ghost Gang.

Activating his Spirit Vision, Eren confirmed that Onik was in a deep, tranquil sleep.

Exhaling slowly, Eren entered the room.

Without hesitation, he lunged forward and drove his blade into Onik's chest, piercing his heart.

The giant didn't even have time to make a sound.

In a matter of minutes, the leader of the Water Ghost Gang and his two subordinates were dead, their lives snuffed out in utter silence.

Eren let out a deep breath, finally relaxing.

Before entering the building, he had used Spirit Vision to verify that Onik and the two guards were the only occupants. With them gone, there was no immediate threat left in the house.
