Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Game of Shadows
The cold press of the gun against his temple was the only thing that Gabriel could focus on. Caleb's hand was steady, unyielding, a final, crushing symbol of the trap Gabriel had walked into. His mind was whirling—he couldn't afford to be here. Not like this. Not with everything on the line.
He forced himself to breathe slowly, deliberately, tuning out the hammering of his heart, the deafening thrum of panic. There had to be a way out. There always was.
"Last chance, Gabriel," Blackwood's voice was smooth, almost polite. "Join me. You've already lost. But you could still be useful. Think about it—your talents, your resolve. You could be part of something far greater than you ever imagined."
Gabriel's jaw clenched. He had no intention of playing along, no desire to become a tool in Blackwood's twisted game. His parents had died because of this man. Thousands of others were buried beneath the lies Blackwood had spun. He wasn't going to bow to this.
"I'll never work for you," Gabriel said, his voice a whisper of defiance, more steel than he had felt in his entire life. His eyes flicked to Caleb, the deadly enforcer, still holding him in place. But Gabriel knew something Caleb didn't.
He wasn't alone.
Suddenly, the low hum of a distant engine pierced the silence, faint at first, but growing louder. Gabriel's eyes darted to the window, his body tense. Blackwood and Caleb didn't seem to notice. They were far too focused on the current chessboard. They didn't realize that Gabriel's allies had already arrived.
The window shattered in an explosion of glass and metal, and before Gabriel could even react, the soft thud of boots hitting the floor echoed in the room. A figure clad in black, moving with the precision of a predator, appeared like a shadow among shadows.
"Caleb, Blackwood," a voice rang out, sharp and filled with authority. "You've overstayed your welcome."
It was Lila.
Blackwood's lips curled into a snarl as he whirled to face her. "You," he spat. "I should've known you'd be involved in this."
Caleb didn't hesitate. He lunged toward Lila with the practiced fluidity of someone used to killing. Gabriel braced for the worst—until the blur of motion that followed was far faster than he could have expected.
Claire.
The hacker was a blur of movement. Her hands were everywhere—tapping on a small, intricate device that had appeared from nowhere, slipping effortlessly into the space between Caleb's guard and his arm. Before the massive bodyguard even realized what was happening, his movements were slowed, his body locked in place by a precise electromagnetic pulse.
Caleb froze, his muscles spasming as the energy coursed through his body. Gabriel's eyes widened in disbelief. Claire had used a hack—a physical one, not just on screens. She'd taken him down.
For a brief, surreal moment, the room felt like it had frozen in time. Caleb was a hulking figure, completely immobilized, as the others gathered around him like wolves circling their prey. Gabriel's mouth went dry, his mind catching up to the whirlwind of events.
"Move, Gabriel," Lila's voice was sharp, authoritative. She didn't give him a moment to hesitate. "We don't have long."
Gabriel's heart pounded in his chest, the overwhelming rush of relief tempered by the overwhelming sense of urgency. He knew this was their one shot—their one chance to take down Blackwood and expose everything.
He didn't waste a second. As if powered by instinct, he moved. One swift motion, his hand gripping Lila's, and they were off—dashing toward the door, the air thick with the sound of their footsteps.
But Blackwood wasn't going to go down without a fight.
"Get them!" Blackwood shouted, fury twisting his features. His eyes darted to the gunmen stationed in the corners of the room, and within moments, they were moving. Guns were drawn, echoing the same dangerous dance Gabriel had seen a thousand times before. The difference now? He wasn't alone.
Claire, her eyes sharp and calculating, was already working. Another pulse from her device, and one of the gunmen dropped to the floor, twitching violently as the electrical current seized him. But there were more. They kept coming, relentless, like a tide that wouldn't stop until they drowned Gabriel and his team.
A shot rang out, the sound sharp and deafening in the narrow hallway of the mansion. Gabriel flinched, but he didn't stop. He couldn't stop. Lila led the charge, pushing past him, eyes alight with determination. She was the tip of their spear, fearless and determined.
"Take cover!" Lila barked, her voice unwavering.
They dashed behind an archway, the world around them shifting as Gabriel's heart thundered in his chest.
"Claire!" Gabriel shouted, his voice grating with urgency. "Get us a way out of here!"
Claire, her hands shaking from the adrenaline but steady in her focus, crouched low, typing rapidly into her device. "Give me a second," she muttered, her voice a low growl. "I need a way to override the security system. They've got the place locked down tight."
The seconds felt like hours. Gabriel's gaze flicked to Lila, who was crouched next to him, ready for whatever came next. Her eyes met his, her face hard as stone, yet he could see the flicker of something in her—a determination to fight, to win.
"Don't let them get away with this, Gabriel," she said, her voice low, but fierce. "Not this time."
Gabriel's eyes hardened. His hands were steady now, the fear dissipating, replaced by something far more dangerous. The fight had always been personal, but now? Now, it was a war. And Blackwood was going to lose.
"Door's open," Claire's voice cut through the tension, snapping Gabriel back into the moment. "We've got a window to make it out."
He nodded, his mind already working through the next steps, the next moves. There would be no turning back. There was too much at stake now.
With a single, sharp breath, Gabriel motioned for the others to move.
The world outside this mansion was vast, dark, and dangerous. But as they sprinted toward the exit, Gabriel knew one thing for sure:
The game was far from over. And the shadows? They were about to find out that Gabriel hadn't just been chasing them.
He had become one.
