Mystery Chaser: The Assassination

Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Underworld Unleashed

The moon hung low over the city, its pale light casting long, twisted shadows through the alleyways. Gabriel's heart still raced, each beat like a drum in his chest, as the team moved with swift precision through the narrow streets. The sudden, brutal escape from Blackwood's mansion had been only the beginning. They'd managed to escape, but the web they were caught in was far more complex than anyone had anticipated.

The quiet hum of Claire's device was the only sound breaking the tense silence. She was the one leading them now, the hacker whose quick thinking had neutralized Caleb and gotten them out of the mansion. But there was something different in her demeanor now. The calm confidence that had been so evident when she'd taken down their foes was gone, replaced by a determined urgency.

"Stay low," Lila ordered, her voice a whisper in the dark. Her gaze flicked to Gabriel, assessing, always assessing. She was a woman who had been in the game far too long to take chances. And Gabriel understood. No one was safe, not yet.

They reached a nondescript black sedan parked in the shadows, and Claire wasted no time. She slid into the driver's seat, fingers already flying over the dashboard, inputting commands, decrypting the security protocols of the car's system. They'd been pursued by Blackwood's men, and their only hope of survival was to stay one step ahead—no mistakes.

Gabriel glanced at Lila as he slid into the back seat. Her face, lit by the glow of the dashboard lights, was a study in concentration, her thoughts clearly racing behind those calculating eyes. She'd grown too accustomed to the danger, too comfortable with it. But this time, it felt different.

"Where are we headed?" he asked quietly, his voice barely audible over the noise of the engine.

"To the safe house," she said, her tone clipped. "We need to regroup, make a plan. Blackwood won't let us go that easily. And we've just revealed ourselves to a bigger target."

Gabriel didn't need to ask who she meant. He already knew. The Syndicate—the criminal empire Blackwood had ties to—was a much larger and far more dangerous entity than anything they'd faced before. It was an underworld where power and wealth ruled, and the price of betrayal was death.

The car sped through the streets, the city passing by in a blur of neon lights and looming shadows. The silence in the vehicle was deafening, but Gabriel could feel the tension in the air, thick as smoke. There was no escaping the reality of what they had just uncovered.

The Syndicate was alive and well—and Blackwood was merely a pawn.

Gabriel's mind was racing, piecing together fragments of information. They had already known about Blackwood's involvement in multiple high-profile crimes, but this was something else entirely. The man was connected to a much larger, far-reaching network. And if Gabriel wanted to stop him, he would need to tear down the entire empire.

But that wasn't the only problem.

As they neared the safe house, Gabriel's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out quickly, his stomach sinking when he saw the name on the screen.

It was Ava.

His finger hovered over the answer button, but before he could press it, the call ended. He stared at the screen, heart pounding in his chest. What had happened?

"Is everything alright?" Lila's voice broke through his thoughts.

He glanced at her, his jaw tight. "Ava just called. She—" Gabriel's voice faltered as he fought to keep his composure. Ava was a close ally, a brilliant criminal psychologist with a knack for reading people. But if she was calling him now... something was wrong.

"I'll call her back," he said, his voice more controlled than he felt. He dialed her number, but it rang endlessly without an answer. A cold sense of dread began to creep over him. Something was off.

"We need to get there faster," he muttered, gripping the seat. "Something's wrong."

Claire looked up from her screen, her eyes narrowing. "We're already running hot, Gabriel. I'll push the system to its limits, but we can't outrun the trackers for long."

Lila met Gabriel's eyes in the rearview mirror. "Ava's been on the radar for a while," she said calmly. "I've been hearing rumors. She might be in danger—connected to Blackwood's people. You know how these things work."

Gabriel gritted his teeth, the weight of her words sinking in like a blade. Ava had been a vital part of their investigation, helping them understand the psychology behind the crimes they were chasing. If she was caught, it would be catastrophic.

He didn't have time to waste.

"Claire, get us to the safe house now. We can't afford to wait," Gabriel snapped.

Without hesitation, Claire pushed the pedal to the floor, the car surging forward into the night, the city lights blurring around them. Gabriel's mind was a whirlwind, the fear for Ava's safety gnawing at him.

Ava had always been more than just an ally to him. She was a friend. And if she was caught in Blackwood's grasp...

The thought was too much to bear.

But just as the safe house came into view, Gabriel's phone buzzed again. This time, it was a text message. His heart stopped when he saw the sender.

It was a video.

Without thinking, he opened the message and played it.

Ava appeared on the screen, but she was disheveled, bruised, and visibly terrified. Her voice was shaky, each word filled with desperation.

"Gabriel, you need to stop. Blackwood knows everything... It's a trap... It's all connected. You're all in danger... Get out—get out now—"

The video cut off abruptly.

Gabriel's blood ran cold. Every muscle in his body tensed, the weight of her words crashing down on him. He looked up, eyes meeting Lila's.

"It's a trap," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "We're walking right into it."

Lila's face hardened, her gaze flicking to Claire. "Turn around. Now."

Before Claire could respond, the sound of screeching tires cut through the air, followed by the unmistakable sound of gunfire.

Gabriel's world turned to chaos.

They had been followed.
