Chapter 123: Chapter 125
In a secluded corner of the Forest of Death, three figures quietly emerged from behind large trees. The trio consisted of two males and one female, all about twelve or thirteen years old. The first boy, Nara Shikamaru, sported his characteristic black hair styled in a peculiar broom-like manner. The girl, Yamanaka Ino, had blonde hair tied in a ponytail with bangs partially covering her forehead. The last member, Akimichi Choji, had a stocky build, his hair styled with a distinctive horn-like shape.
While Shikamaru and Ino carefully arranged tripwires connected to bells as an early warning system, Choji casually dug into a bag of potato chips, seemingly unconcerned.
"Choji! What are you doing?" Ino hissed in frustration, walking over to him. "You're eating at a time like this?"
"I'm sorry, Ino," Choji replied between bites. "I just feel hungry, that's all."
Shikamaru, chewing on a chip himself, added lazily, "There are still five minutes before the exam officially starts. What's the rush?"
Before Ino could respond, the faint ringing of their warning bells broke the quiet. Shikamaru's sharp instincts kicked in immediately. "Ino, hide," he ordered, grabbing Choji and pulling him into the bushes. Ino quickly followed.
The sound of approaching footsteps reached their ears, accompanied by a clear, melodic female voice. "Master Shigure, aren't we supposed to be looking for that Uchiha boy?"
Two figures came into view. One was completely wrapped in bandages, while the other had their face concealed beneath a hood. Both wore the Rain Ninja forehead protector. It was Kirito (Shigure) and Pakura (Amane) in disguise.
Hidden in the bushes, Shikamaru's sharp eyes widened as he recognized them. His heart sank. These two were no ordinary Genin. Their presence alone radiated danger.
Kirito glanced in their direction briefly, his tone indifferent. "It's still early. We can find a scroll before heading to Sasuke."
Pakura nodded, her gaze sweeping the area. "It seems, Shigure, that we've already found one."
Ino, Shikamaru, and Choji froze. Beads of sweat formed on their foreheads. Their carefully laid plans felt utterly inadequate against such formidable opponents.
Suddenly, the sound of kunai slicing through the air interrupted the tense moment. Three kunai shot toward Kirito and Pakura. Without even looking, Kirito caught them mid-air and casually threw them back.
Screams echoed as three Rain Ninja fell from the canopy, their bodies limp as they hit the ground.
"It seems they were from our own village," Pakura noted, her tone neutral as she glanced at the bodies.
Kirito didn't even flinch. "Doesn't matter. If they're foolish enough to attack us, they deserve it." With a wave of his hand, he retrieved a scroll from one of the fallen ninjas' packs. It bore the kanji for Heaven—the same type of scroll their team already possessed.
Pakura turned her attention toward the bushes where Shikamaru and his teammates were hiding. Her instinct to complete the mission took over, and she began to approach them.
Shikamaru's mind raced. He prepared himself for the worst when Kirito's voice stopped Pakura in her tracks.
"Let them go," he said flatly. "Consider it a favor for the Akimichi clan."
Shikamaru's sharp mind caught onto those words immediately. He watched as Kirito glanced deliberately in their direction before disappearing into the jungle with Pakura.
When the duo was out of sight, Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji stumbled out of the bushes, each gasping for breath.
"I thought we were done for," Shikamaru muttered, stuffing another chip into his mouth to steady his nerves.
"Why are you still eating at a time like this?" Ino snapped, though the trembling in her voice betrayed her lingering fear.
Shikamaru ignored her, his thoughts replaying Kirito's words. "What did he mean by 'a favor for the Akimichi clan'? Choji, does your family have any connections to the Rain Ninja?"
Choji scratched his head. "Not that I know of. We've never worked with them."
Shikamaru's frown deepened. "Then why would he say that? Something about this doesn't add up."
Elsewhere in the Forest of Death, Hyuga Neji, Rock Lee, and Tenten had just spotted Kirito and Pakura. Standing on a tree branch above them, Tenten twirled a kunai in her hand and remarked, "Looks like they've split up. These two made a careless mistake showing themselves out in the open."
Lee looked to Neji. "What do you think? Should we engage?"
Neji activated his Byakugan, his sharp eyes scanning the area. "Wait. There's still one more of them unaccounted for. He could be hiding nearby."
Using his Byakugan, Neji quickly scanned the surroundings. When he turned his gaze toward Kirito and Pakura, his face immediately paled. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead.
"Run," Neji ordered, his voice trembling. Without hesitation, he grabbed Lee and Tenten and bolted in the opposite direction.
"Neji, what's wrong?" Lee asked, his voice filled with confusion. "We've faced worse opponents before."
"Yeah," Tenten added, her confidence shaken by Neji's unusual reaction. "With your Byakugan, those two should be no problem."
"Run," Neji repeated, his tone leaving no room for argument. "If we stay, we'll die."
His Byakugan had revealed the overwhelming chakra levels radiating from Kirito and Pakura. It was unlike anything he had ever encountered. The sheer scale of Kirito's chakra alone defied comprehension.
Those two were not Genin. Of that, Neji was certain.
