Chapter 151: Chapter 149: The Opportunity
Chapter 149: The Opportunity
Closing the system panel, Baishi reclined in the warm waters of the hot spring, contemplating his next steps for evolution.
First and foremost, his Base Attributes remained a top priority. Although his physical capabilities already far exceeded the average shinobi, the foundation of all his abilities depended on these attributes. Any improvement here was directly tied to the effectiveness of his overall combat power, making them non-negotiable for further advancement.
Next came Wood Release. Currently, its potential had reached its upper limit. Without pushing its cap higher, any further work would be limited to incremental improvements—hardly worthwhile for Baishi's ambitions. He decided to allocate some of his time and energy to upgrading Wood Release, unlocking new possibilities for its application.
As for Dust Release, it could wait. Though its power was unparalleled, Baishi had yet to fully utilize its existing potential. Once he mastered it, he could revisit improving its scope.
Then came specialized abilities like Regeneration, Energy Absorption, Mental Fortress, Super Vision, and Mind's Eye. While slow to evolve, these abilities were crucial to his combat readiness and overall strength. Baishi resolved to devote significant effort to enhancing them.
Baishi turned his thoughts to a long-standing issue: his energy source. In the beginning, his progress was bottlenecked by limited energy availability. The acquisition of the Nine-Tails had resolved this for a time, but with the evolution of Energy Absorption, a new issue arose: the insufficient supply of chakra from Kurama.
As his abilities continued to evolve, this supply issue would only worsen. Baishi's current options to address this problem were twofold:
1. Capture Additional Tailed Beasts: This would expand his energy sources and buy him more time.
2. Broaden the Scope of Energy Absorption: By evolving this ability, he could enable it to absorb other forms of energy beyond chakra, potentially including solar energy or ambient energy from the environment.
Short-term practicality favored the first option. However, Baishi understood that the second was the only sustainable solution. The nine tailed beasts were finite, but expanding his ability to draw power from alternative sources—such as sunlight or natural energy—could provide virtually limitless energy.
After careful consideration, he decided to pursue both strategies simultaneously. For now, his immediate focus would be on refining the seal on his body to increase the rate at which it extracted chakra from the Nine-Tails.
With his plan in place, Baishi left the hot spring, washed up, and returned to his room at the inn. There, he summoned the system to set up his evolution goals. Once satisfied with the configuration, he unrolled a storage scroll and retrieved paper and ink, turning his attention to studying the intricacies of his seal.
At the headquarters of Root, Danzo sat at his desk as a knock sounded on the door.
"Come in," he ordered.
A Root operative entered and knelt before him. "Lord Danzo, we've received word from the daimyo's court."
"Speak," Danzo commanded.
The operative nodded. "Our contact has confirmed that Kohma and his faction plan to take action in three days."
"Hmph," Danzo scoffed, his lone visible eye narrowing. "Fools. They overestimate their strength."
Turning back to the operative, he continued, "Relay my orders: Squads One and Two are to prepare for departure immediately. We leave in two hours."
"Yes, Lord Danzo," the operative responded before hastily leaving the room.
As silence returned, Danzo's gaze grew cold, his mind clearly at work. After two hours, he led a team of a dozen Root operatives out of Konoha, heading toward the Fire Daimyo's court.
Unbeknownst to Danzo, a lone figure watched his team depart from the shadows. Once certain they had left, the figure swiftly returned to Konoha to pass the information along. Through a series of handoffs, the message eventually reached Baishi.
At his inn in the Land of Hot Springs, Baishi unfolded the message, reading:
"Target has departed, possibly related to the Twelve Guardian Ninja."
The "target," of course, referred to Danzo. Over the past three months, Baishi had quietly established a network within Konoha. By controlling several shinobi, he ensured that Danzo's movements would not go unnoticed.
This vigilance had finally paid off.
The Twelve Guardian Ninja, Baishi recalled, were a group of elite shinobi formed to protect the Fire Daimyo. All members were at least jonin-level, making them a formidable force.
However, the group had fractured due to ideological differences.
One faction, led by Kohma, was aggressively loyal to the daimyo, believing that the Hokage was unnecessary and that the daimyo should hold absolute authority over the ninja world.
The other faction, led by members like Chiriku and Dilu, advocated for a balance of power, insisting that the Hokage and daimyo should coexist and share responsibilities.
These opposing views had culminated in a bloody conflict that decimated the group. Only three members survived, and the Twelve Guardian Ninja were subsequently disbanded.
"Hah. No wonder Danzo's so eager to act," Baishi mused. Danzo, who had long desired the Hokage seat, would never tolerate a movement that sought to abolish the position entirely.
Although Baishi wasn't entirely certain, it seemed likely that Danzo's motives were twofold:
If the daimyo loyalists succeeded, Danzo would likely intervene to consolidate his own power. If they failed, he would simply return to Konoha, leaving no trace of his involvement.
"Typical Danzo," Baishi muttered, amused by the man's calculated self-interest.
Regardless, Baishi's only concern was that Danzo had finally left Konoha, giving him a golden opportunity to act.
With the message in hand, Baishi sat cross-legged on the floor and activated the Spirit Transformation Technique to prepare for what was to come.
