Chapter 117: Chapter 115: The basics
"What the hell?" Dan said.
Remembering Uncle Roger, Ryu could not help but chuckle at his grandfather's response.
He said, "I told you not to be mad!"
Dan shook his head, a grin breaking through his stern expression. "I'm not mad. Just… surprised. You really don't know how to take it easy, do you?"
He held the seal up to the light, examining it closely. "You've really outdone yourself this time."
Ryu scratched the back of his head, a sheepish smile on his face. "I had a lot of new ideas while working on the storage seal. After I finished the assignment, I couldn't resist executing them." He paused, his tone becoming more serious. "I remember your warning, Grandpa, and I'm sorry. But in my defence, I was really careful. I thought everything through before I made any changes. That's why I was able to complete it so soon. And I did it on regular paper."
Dan's thoughts raced as he listened to Ryu's explanation. "Even top-level grandmasters took decades to create a new seal," he believed.
His mind flashed back to the stories of the Uzumaki clan, the pioneers of fuinjutsu. Their long lifespans had given them the time to master the art, to experiment, and to refine their seals over years, even decades. And here was Ryu, on just his second day of fuinjutsu training, accomplishing something that took others a lifetime.
Dan thought, "This boy… he will undoubtedly become a Fuinjutsu Monarch one day."
Dan cleared his throat, pushing those thoughts aside for the moment. "Have you tested this one?" he asked, his voice calm but curious.
Ryu shook his head. "No, I haven't tested it yet. I remember what you said, so I wanted to be careful. I waited for you to show up."
Dan nodded, a hint of relief in his eyes. "It's a good thing you were at least this considerate. Ok, write this seal on an actual fuinjutsu paper."
Ryu, without wasting time, followed the instruction and wrote the new seal on an actual seal with special ink. His writing speed amazed Dan, but he was expecting this as he knew about his sharp memory.
Ryu was about to execute the seal when suddenly Dan interrupted.
"No," he said firmly, "I'm going to do this myself."
Ryu nodded, stepping back as Dan prepared to test the seal. Dan took a regular storage seal and the new one Ryu had crafted, along with some identical weights. He first stored the weights in the regular seal, watching as they disappeared into the space-time vault within the seal. Then he turned his attention to Ryu's modified seal.
As Dan activated the new seal, the weights vanished just as they had with the regular seal. But something was different. Dan's eyes narrowed as he felt the flow of chakra through the seal. It was smoother, more efficient. After a moment, he spoke, his voice filled with quiet awe. "It uses almost 35% less chakra."
Ryu's eyes lit up. "So it's better than older Seal?"
Dan nodded, still staring at the seal in his hand. "This new seal… it's going to be revolutionary. It's more efficient, and it's not that much more complex than a regular seal."
He looked at Ryu, his expression a mix of pride and amazement. "How did you come up with this?"
Ryu shrugged, trying to downplay his achievement. "The old seal had a lot of unnecessary parts. It was designed for broad-spectrum use, to store both lightweight and heavy objects. I optimised it to store a large number of smaller objects in the most efficient way possible."
Dan chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. "You make it sound so simple."
Ryu grinned. "Well, it kind of is… once you understand the basics."
Dan was dumbfounded. He was also a grandmaster; does this mean he still needs to brush up on his basics?
Dan's mind was already racing with possibilities. "This seal could earn you a huge sum of money," he said, his tone thoughtful. "But that brings us to an important question. Do you want to keep this seal a secret, or do you want to register it under the Secret Jutsu Act with the Fuinjutsu Council? Only then would you be able to sell it."
Ryu tilted his head, curiosity piqued. "What's the Fuinjutsu Council?"
Dan explained, "The Fuinjutsu Council oversees the creation and regulation of seals in the Fire Country. If we register this seal under the Secret Jutsu Act, the news of its development will become public. But the seal will be only available to the members of the Fuinjutsu Council, all of whom are Fuinjutsu grandmasters. Other grandmasters might try to replicate it to get insight into the seal, but they won't be able to use it for commercial purposes without our permission. Even if they succeed in getting the insight of the seal, there is no danger to us. The secret Jutsu Act is very stringent. It was one of the foundation stones of this village, so the founders of the village made sure the secrets of the clans stayed secret."
Dan paused, a grave tone entering his voice. "Or, if you don't want to sell it, we can simply report its discovery to the Fuinjutsu Council and keep the details sealed with the Hokage and not share them with even the members of the Fuinjutsu Council. In that case, nothing will be shared with others except the Hokage and his ANBU."
Ryu asked, "If we report our findings, you will no longer be a hidden grandmaster. Everybody will know your name, and other countries will undoubtedly learn about it eventually. So what is the benefit of reporting our findings to the Fuinjutsu Council?"
Dan explains to him, "To encourage the Ninjas to report about the new Justus they created, the village rewards them. The Ninjutsu or Fuinjutsu is displayed to the respective council, and after registration and obtaining the certificate, they are rewarded by the village council on the recommendation of the Ninjutsu Council or Fuinjutsu Council."
Ryu asked, "But why would the village reward it? Everyone will know your jutsu and will think of ways to counter it."
Dan said, "Knowledge is a weapon. This knowledge helps the village to better determine suitable candidates for a particular mission. Also, in events of war, the village may use your created jutsu or seal for its benefit. They always compensate the creator for such scenarios. Besides, selling seals not tested by the Fuinjutsu Council is a crime in the village. So we need to report and register it if we want to monetise it."
Ryu thought for a moment, weighing his options. "I think we should register the seal under your name, Grandpa," he said finally. "I'm going to sell the seal, so there's no need to hide it. But if people find out that a kid created a new, advanced seal, I'll get way too much attention. I don't want that… not until I'm strong enough to handle it."
Dan, clearly hesitant, asked again, "Are you sure about this?"
Ryu nodded. "Yeah. If the wrong people find out about this, it could put me in danger. I'd rather stay under the radar for now."
Dan rubbed his chin and sighed, but he could understand Ryu's logic. "If the Root Division found out," he thought, "Danzo would do anything to get Ryu under his control."
"Alright," Dan said finally. "We'll register it under my name. But you'll need to train me on how to use this new seal. It may take some time."
Ryu smiled. "No problem."
Closing his eyes, Ryu entered his [Mind Palace], where the new, improved storage seal appeared before him like a floating screen. With a gesture of his hand, the seal fissioned into layers, each one representing a different step in the process.
- Analysing seal structure and dividing it into simpler blocks for easy understanding: Block 1… Block 2…
He carefully examined each layer, ensuring that everything was in order. Then, with another gesture, he fused the layers back together, watching as they seamlessly reformed into the complete seal.
- Seal integrity: 100%
- Storage seal segmented into simpler blocks with detailed explanations.
"Success," Ryu whispered to himself, a satisfied smile on his face.
Opening his eyes, Ryu took a blank scroll and began drawing each step of the seal, clearly labelling each block. He even went a step further, inscribing the function of each part and block of the seal. Fuinjutsu was widely used, but there were still many unknown elements to it. Ryu's manual was detailed, providing explanations that even seasoned sealmasters would find valuable. It took him an hour to transcribe what's inside his mind onto the scroll. Dan stared at the scroll with eyes that were about to pop.
"This will help you learn it faster," Ryu said as he handed the scroll to Dan.
Dan looked at the boy in wonder, flipping through the scroll. "This is… incredibly detailed," he said, his voice filled with admiration. "You've thought of everything."
Dan chuckled, shaking his head, a thought crossing his mind. "Before we register this seal, we need to name it."
