Chapter 53: Chapter 53: The Fifth Hokage
That night, Kirito sat in a hospital consultation room, leaning back in his chair and idly turning a kunai in his hand. The kunai was TenTen's gift, her first-ever weapon, and its small bow added a personal touch.
Reflecting on the gesture, Kirito couldn't help but feel a bit awkward. Despite his two lifetimes of memories, he was unaccustomed to moments like this. Still, he understood TenTen's reasoning—she valued hard work and cherished her progress as a ninja.
TenTen, coming from a civilian background, had no grand family inheritance or secret techniques to rely on. Her dream of becoming a ninja, inspired by Tsunade, was one she pursued with sheer determination and talent.
Joining Might Guy's team had its benefits and limitations. She gained a solid foundation in physical prowess, but opportunities to explore her true potential in ninjutsu, especially spatial techniques, had been limited—until now.
Kirito's self-created "Elemental Gate" had opened a new path for her. It was rare for such techniques to be shared outside one's family or clan, yet Kirito had tailored it specifically for TenTen. It was a significant gesture, and her gratitude was evident in her gift.
[Maybe this means something more...] Kirito thought for a moment, then shook his head. Relationships were unfamiliar territory for him.
The next day, as Kirito was enjoying the quiet of Konoha Hospital's observation deck, TenTen sprinted toward him, her face glowing with excitement.
"Kirito! I heard Tsunade-sama is back in the village! Do you want to go see her with me?"
"Where do you plan to find her?" Kirito asked, standing and stretching.
"Hmm… the Hokage Building?" TenTen guessed.
"Let's try the hospital first," Kirito suggested. "If she's back, she'll probably visit here. She's a medical ninja, after all."
"Good idea! Let's go!" TenTen said eagerly.
At Konoha Hospital, the two arrived just as voices filtered out from behind the closed door of Rock Lee's ward.
"...At least your life is not in danger," came a calm, confident female voice. "You should thank the doctor who stabilized you. Without their intervention, the bone fragments might have reached critical nerves, leaving even me helpless."
"Master Tsunade, can Lee recover?"
"If we proceed with surgery, yes. However, I must warn you that while the operation is highly likely to succeed, there's a small chance of failure. If it fails, Lee's left hand and foot will be permanently disabled."
"What's the success rate?"
"Seventy-eight percent."
"...I see."
"I'll give you time to think it over," Tsunade said, her voice gentle but firm.
A moment later, the door opened, and Tsunade nearly walked into Kirito and TenTen.
"Who are you two?" she asked, her golden-brown eyes appraising them.
"Master Tsunade!" TenTen exclaimed, her voice filled with admiration. "I'm your biggest fan! I've always dreamed of becoming a legendary kunoichi like you!"
Tsunade blinked, then chuckled. "Is that so? Well, keep working hard."
Meanwhile, Might Guy stepped out from behind her. "Tsunade-sama, let me introduce you! These are my other students: TenTen and Kirito!"
He gestured toward Kirito. "Kirito was the one who stabilized Lee's injuries. He's also a medical ninja."
Tsunade raised an eyebrow, her gaze lingering on Kirito's pale eyes. "A Hyuga with medical talent. That explains the precision."
She gave him a nod of approval. "Good work. Your quick thinking made my job much easier."
"Thank you, Tsunade-sama," Kirito replied politely.
Behind him, TenTen could barely contain her excitement. "Tsunade-sama, I admire you so much!" she gushed. "You're everything I aspire to be!"
Tsunade smiled at the girl's enthusiasm, while Shizune, her assistant, observed quietly from behind, clutching her small pig, Tonton. The little pink pig seemed equally curious about the tiny leopard perched on Kirito's shoulder.
After some brief conversation, Tsunade excused herself to attend to her Hokage duties.
Inside Lee's ward, the young ninja was grappling with a difficult decision.
"Teacher… if my hand and foot are permanently disabled, does that mean I'll never be able to become a ninja again?"
Guy hesitated, searching for the right words. He knew how devastating it would be for Lee, whose entire identity was tied to his dream.
"Lee," Guy finally said, "do you remember the day we first became Genin? The day I sparred with Kakashi?"
"Yes," Lee said softly. "That was the day you taught me about perseverance."
Guy nodded. "If you work hard enough, this surgery will succeed. Even if the odds were one in a million, I would stand by you. I vowed to help you become a great ninja, no matter what."
TenTen stepped forward. "We all believe in you, Lee. You'll make it."
"If permitted, I'll assist during the surgery," Kirito added. "There's no need to worry."
Moved by their unwavering support, Lee's resolve strengthened. "Thank you, everyone. I'll do my best!"
Two days later, Tsunade stood atop the Hokage Building, her voice ringing out across the village as she declared:
"From this day forth, I will lead Konoha as the Fifth Hokage!"
Cheers erupted from the gathered crowd, and TenTen looked up at her idol with admiration.
"That's exactly what a legendary kunoichi should look like," she said softly.
[She fits the role perfectly,] Kirito thought, watching Tsunade's commanding presence.
As the new Hokage took her place, the village seemed brighter, its future more secure.
