Chapter 154: Chapter 154: The Opponent
A red light flickered, and Luffy's sword sheath dropped onto the deck, embedding itself into the wood. In an instant, his figure vanished, leaving only a piercing sound in the air as his blade tore through it.
To Nami and Uta, Luffy had suddenly disappeared. Yet to Bear King, who was still some distance away, it was all too clear—a streak of fire shot skyward, transforming into a flaming eagle that dove straight toward him.
Bear King looked up. "A fire-wielding swordsman? But that strange wind earlier—what was it? Why did all my men collapse... Did they breathe in some kind of poison?"
Thinking back on one of his men who specialized in poison gas, he wondered if it was some kind of colorless, scentless gas.
"Captain, if that kid uses fire, I'll need to back out!" Stinky Rat called out to Bear King, visibly anxious.
Fire was his worst enemy. If he encountered an open flame, he'd explode, and if he broke one of the bottles he carried on his back, it would be all over.
"It's too late for that."
Bear King's entire body began to take on the sheen of steel as he stared at the flaming eagle descending upon him.
"A fire-wielding swordsman? Too bad that won't work on me!"
Bear King sneered, planting himself firmly on the spot and calculating his timing for an upward punch to meet the incoming firebird.
"Let's see if I can shatter your sword!"
His massive fist, nearly the size of a grown man's torso, glistened with a metallic sheen.
This guy... Is he asking to die?
Luffy held his burning blade as he dove down, watching Bear King's movements.
Let's see if I can pierce that hand! Whizz! The King's Sword pierced deep into Bear King's hand, flames spreading through the flesh, igniting his entire arm.
Bear King let out a pained gasp, his eyes widening as he stared in disbelief at the small figure standing on his fist.
This sword... It actually managed to drive itself into his hand.
"So, it's a legendary blade, huh? No wonder it's got that kind of piercing power. I underestimated it. Usually, any swordsman who tries this would get crushed to pieces, blade and all, by my punch. But you held out…"
Bear King broke out in a cold sweat, glancing at the sword that had nearly embedded itself into his bones.
Luffy swiftly pulled out the King's Sword, executing several quick leaps back to the ground. With a sweeping motion, his blade slashed through the nearby pirates, cutting through both flesh and weapons with ease.
In moments, two of Bear King's lieutenants fell, unable to even react, while Stinky Rat, consumed by flames, triggered a massive explosion, instantly obliterating any pirates nearby.
After clearing out the battlefield, Luffy finally clutched his chest, coughing up blood.
Just one punch had set his body's blood and energy in turmoil.
And that was after piercing through the force of Bear King's punch with his King's Sword.
What a close call.
For the first time, Luffy's unparalleled sword had met its match. Bear King's body was practically steel, and without the added force of Armament Haki, it wouldn't have even penetrated his fist.
But even with the flames... Luffy turned his gaze to Bear King.
The fire was spreading across Bear King's entire body, yet he stood within the flames, seemingly unaffected.
Any regular swordsman would have had their skin scorched by now and lost the will to fight in pain.
This man not only had more strength than Luffy but an extraordinary level of defense as well.
"Such a painful cut. Is this blade one of the Great Grade swords?"
Bear King inspected his hand, where a deep, bone-piercing wound now bled profusely.
"It's the first time a swordsman's managed to injure me like this."
"You're also a first for me."
Luffy replied, still catching his breath from the initial clash. He'd plunged the King's Sword directly into Bear King's fist, but it felt like he was blocking a solid iron wall, leaving his insides shaken and bruised.
One thing was clear—he couldn't afford to take many more of those punches.
Bear King's body flared with a metallic sheen, his arms heating up until they glowed red, flames licking the surface of his skin.
This wasn't Luffy's fire; it was a fire Bear King himself generated.
In moments, Bear King's flames were threatening to consume Luffy's own. But Luffy swiftly activated a second wave of Armament Haki within his flames, forcing them to detonate.
Bear King hadn't expected a second-layer effect and was blasted back, bleeding from the impact.
Luffy's Armament Haki had traveled along the flames and sword, inflicting internal damage on Bear King's arm.
Bear King's right arm hung twisted, unable to return to its original position.
"A steel man who's eaten the Iron-Iron Fruit... Who would've thought a mere swordsman could injure me like this? I was supposed to be a swordsman's worst nightmare…"
Bear King muttered under his breath, irritation clear in his voice.
Bear King's hands flared again, his figure leaping into the air, fists raised. "Try my Superheated Drill Strike!"
"Iron-Iron Fruit?"
Luffy rolled along the ground, dodging the incoming punch as heat seared his clothes.
Reacting quickly, he grabbed hold of the flames, tossing them toward Bear King's face in a cloud of ash and embers.
But it was useless; Bear King's defenses were ironclad even there.
Ace with the Flame-Flame Fruit would laugh at this...
"If you've got the Iron-Iron Fruit, then stick to iron and leave the fire alone!"
Bear King's punch hit the ground, sending tremors through the battlefield. With his Iron-Iron Fruit's natural defenses and enhanced density, his punches carried immense force, enough to send shockwaves radiating out.
This guy was indeed a true boss-level opponent.
Strength? Ineffective. Weapon? Limited effect. Only his technique was making any impact.
Meanwhile, the Navy's ships were docking nearby, but both fighters were too absorbed in their duel to notice.
Bear King chased after Luffy relentlessly, his iron-clad fists unafraid of the edge of a famed blade.
Every slash of Luffy's sword left nothing but shallow cuts and sparks, the clash of steel ringing out.
Light cuts merely grazed him; full-strength slashes barely dug into his flesh.
Luffy darted around Bear King's legs, leaving shallow wounds across them as he observed the effect.
His Flaming Eagle Dive was among his heaviest strikes, designed to cut down foes in one blow. Yet even his opening attack couldn't bring Bear King to his knees.
Luffy refused to risk long slashes, instead executing hit-and-run moves, narrowly dodging Bear King's punches and striking whenever he found an opening, leaving fresh gashes across the behemoth's chest.
"You little punk! Stop jumping around! Quit annoying me!"
Bear King's fists swung in wide arcs, flames roaring from his arms as he attempted to hit Luffy with left and right hooks. His rage grew as Luffy's form slipped through his attacks.
If he could land just one punch... Just one punch would be enough to turn this brat into a pulp!
"That's right... Frustrated now?"
Luffy wiped the blood from his mouth, whirling his sword in the air, sending several flying slashes crashing into Bear King's chest.
Bear King lunged toward him, and Luffy swiftly executed a sliding kick to slip between Bear King's legs, delivering a crescent-shaped fire kick toward his lower regions.
Tempest Kick!
Bear King let out a bellow, instinctively closing his legs, producing a shockwave as his massive hands clutched his backside.
Perfect timing! Luffy leaped high, landing a powerful sword slash across Bear King's back, drawing a fresh surge of blood.
Immediately, his gaze locked onto the back of Bear King's neck. Twisting his body in mid-air, he spun like a top, landing rapid-fire slashes against Bear King's nape, each impact producing a resounding clang as metal clashed against metal.
