Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Rapid Progress
Question:
What is the gravitational acceleration at 40 degrees north latitude?
How long would it take to fall from a height of 15 meters?
Answer:
Using the formula h = 1/2gt²:
That's approximately 1.75 seconds.
1.75 seconds—barely enough time for a single breath at a normal breathing rate.
However, the thrill of freefall can accelerate your heartbeat, hold your breath involuntarily, and flood your system with adrenaline.
That was exactly what Bid was experiencing.
Or perhaps something even more extraordinary.
The 1.75 seconds felt like an eternity to him.
He could clearly notice himself blinking, spot the dust accumulating on the ground below due to long-term neglect, and even see a few industrious ants under a wooden plank, tirelessly carrying away the corpse of a dead spider.
Then, mid-air, Bid managed to twist his body around!
From the beam above, he caught sight of several heads peeking down at him.
Spider-Man Noir's masked face was inscrutable.
Spider-Ham, still chewing on his hotdog, looked downward past his snout.
Peter B. extended his right hand, poised to shoot a web and rescue him if needed.
Gwen's expression was calm, though her fingers hovered over her web shooter.
"Fire your web!" Spider-Man Noir's voice snapped Bid out of his trance-like state.
Instinctively, Bid pressed the button on his palm.
Thwip!
A strand of white webbing shot from his wrist and stuck securely to the ceiling.
Duang!
Just as he was about to hit the ground, Bid's body abruptly stopped mid-air. The sudden halt, transitioning from extreme motion to stillness, caused only slight discomfort without any serious strain.
However, Bid barely noticed this.
Instead, he felt the momentum from shooting the web pull him upward.
Thud!
His body slammed into the ceiling, and his limbs instinctively spread out.
To his astonishment, he found himself clinging upside down to the ceiling—perfectly stable.
His abilities had finally awakened!
An incredible perspective!
A new world!
Bid thought he would be ecstatic, but as he hung there in this inhuman pose, he felt an unexpected calm.
It was as if this world—this state—was where he truly belonged.
This was who he was meant to be.
Swish!
A figure appeared next to him.
It was Spider-Man Noir.
Through the mask came his slightly gratified voice: "Well done. You've done it!"
"Yes, thank you," Bid said sincerely. Without Spider-Man Noir's encouragement, he wasn't sure how long it would have taken him to take this leap.
"What about me?" Spider-Ham swung up to join them.
"Uh, of course, thank you too," Bid replied with a smile.
"And me?" Gwen chimed in, joining the group.
Bid: "...Fine, thank you too."
Swish!
Peter B. landed nearby as well.
Before he could speak, Bid raised his hand. "You don't have to say anything. Thank you as well!"
"Hahaha!" The group burst into laughter.
Whoosh!
Just then, Bid's bioelectric adhesion seemed to malfunction, and he slipped from the ceiling.
"Whoa!" Bid yelled in alarm, instinctively firing another web to stop his fall.
Using the web's tension, he swung back up to the ceiling.
"It seems like you still need more practice," Gwen remarked seriously.
"Alright, let's head back to the beam," Spider-Man Noir said, effortlessly dangling from the ceiling with one hand while pointing below. His ease and confidence made Bid envious.
For now, Bid could only stay steady by clinging to the ceiling with both hands and feet. If he didn't maintain full contact, he risked falling again.
He calculated the distance between himself and the beam, then leapt like a spider launching into motion.
Smack!
His hand slammed onto the beam, and he winced from the impact.
Turns out, he had overshot slightly and instinctively grabbed at the beam, resulting in a painful collision.
Bid let go reflexively, but a soft hand grabbed his wrist.
Looking up, he saw Gwen.
With a slight tug, she helped him back onto the beam.
"Thanks," Bid said gratefully as he let go of her hand.
Gwen smiled faintly. "Don't mention it. You'd better practice quickly. Once the gadget is ready, we're all heading for the big boss, Kingpin."
"Got it!" Bid nodded enthusiastically.
Practice makes perfect.
Having successfully fired webs and climbed earlier, Bid quickly attempted a second, then a third try.
This time, he didn't even need encouragement. With a quick adjustment, he leapt off the beam again.
Thanks to his experience with Spider-Man games, Bid quickly got the hang of the web shooters. As he improved, he even began to enjoy it.
His figure swung freely through the abandoned warehouse. As he became more proficient, he deliberately added obstacles to navigate, testing his newfound reflexes.
Flying!
A timeless human dream.
In the East, they envisioned soaring on swords; in the West, witches flew on broomsticks.
And now, Bid could fly freely through the air with his webs.
For that alone, it was priceless.
As Bid reveled in his newfound ability, Spider-Man Noir and the others watched him from the sidelines.
Peter B. commented, "This guy's got good instincts. He's already looking pretty decent."
Spider-Ham added, "I think his moves are pretty cool... oh, check out that mid-air spin! Wow!"
Gwen agreed, "His movements are like a dancer's. His aerial steps may still be rough, but the potential is there. I think I'm starting to like him."
Spider-Man Noir shook his head. "It looks impressive, but he's adding too many flashy moves. For a beginner, though, I'd say he's passable."
"Hey, cut him some slack. He just started," Peter B. said.
Spider-Man Noir shrugged. "Fair enough. He's doing well. But I still need to correct some of his risky behaviors—there's no need for all that flair."
After about half an hour of practice, Bid felt he had a decent grasp of coordinating his body and web shooters. That's when Spider-Man Noir called him to stop.
"Hey, Bid, if you keep swinging around like that, this place will be covered in webs—we won't even be able to stand here!" he shouted
