Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Spider-Man's Underground Vault
Peter, middle-aged and slightly embarrassed, explained, "Although he can't just appear out of nowhere, he's still pretty cool. Let him show you his electric powers, Miles."
Upon hearing this, Miles stretched out his arms, cradling them in front of himself, preparing to generate electricity.
"Emmmm..."
Another attempt.
Still, nothing happened.
The scene fell back into awkward silence.
Doubts were now written all over their faces.
Miles sighed, "I can't just make it happen on command."
"Did you hear that? He can't just make it happen on command, but he has other skills!" Middle-aged Peter turned to Miles, "Like, like what again?"
Miles scratched his head, muttering, "I only have these two."
"Uh..." Middle-aged Peter awkwardly froze.
Though he prided himself on being one of the most outspoken superheroes in the Marvel universe (Deadpool: "Excuse me?"), awkward small talk and bragging weren't exactly his strong suit.
"Oh, man."
"Hmph—"
"Tsk, tsk."
Spider-Man Noir, Peter Porker, and Peni all shook their heads.
Gwen, standing by, stepped forward to defend Miles, saying, "Listen, I've seen his powers. He really has potential. I think, maybe, he can help us get home."
"Alright, young man," Spider-Man Noir walked forward and faced Miles, "Kingpin will send a lot of tough guys after you. They're all huge and hard to deal with. Do you think you can handle them all at once? Are you confident?"
Miles struck a fighting pose, mimicking Spider-Man Noir's stance, exuding confidence on the outside but with a voice tinged with doubt: "Actually, I've never fought anyone before."
The group collapsed in laughter.
"Surprise attack!" Spider-Man Noir stepped forward and threw a mock punch, but before Miles could block it, he suddenly swept his leg in a low kick.
Thud!
Miles was sent tumbling backward, almost crashing into the wall.
Luckily, Bi De was quick enough to catch him just in time.
"Can you reassemble your gaming rig while fighting?" Peni, pulling out a game console from somewhere, tossed it to Miles.
Miles: Huh?
Gwen crossed her arms, asking, "Can you dance as gracefully as a ballerina while floating in the air?"
Miles: ?
Bi De: Weren't you just defending him? That switch in allegiance was way too fast.
Spider-Man Noir added, "Can you sever your own humanity and not feel guilty for your violent actions?"
Miles: ??
Aunt May then chimed in, "Can you help your aunt register on a dating site and maybe go out on a date once in a while?"
Miles: ????
Peter Porker also floated up: "When you smell food, can you float in ecstasy?"
Miles: How could a normal person defy gravity and float? Newton's tombstone would be crushed by this, seriously!
Bi De looked thoughtful.
If he didn't join in now, would he seem out of place?
"Are you tough enough?"
"Are you heartless enough?"
"Are you disciplined enough?"
Just as Miles was feeling overwhelmed by the barrage of questions...
Bi De stepped in.
"Everyone, listen to me. I think I know what Miles is capable of."
"Oh?" The group turned their attention to Bi De.
Spider-Man Noir tilted his head and then his eyes lit up. He remembered that when they first met, Bi De had mentioned that his world had many Spider-Man stories, including one about Miles.
At the time, Bi De had said that different worlds had different Spider-Men, and therefore, different versions of Miles too.
So, it made sense that Bi De knew about Miles' abilities.
With this thought in mind, Spider-Man Noir spoke up, "I believe Bi De, because he really knows a lot of things, like... us."
The group: ?
"What do you mean?"
"Literally," Bi De said seriously. "But before we go on, I think the priority right now is to fix the 'little gadget.' Without it, everything is moot."
"Good point. Do we have a place for that?" The group turned to Aunt May.
Aunt May smiled and said, "Of course! Follow me, kids!"
They all got up and headed to the backyard.
In the back yard stood an unassuming little house—a place many families have for storing odds and ends.
From the outside, it looked like an ordinary wooden hut.
Seeing it, Middle-aged Peter chuckled, "I have one of those too, a shed for storing my gear."
Bi De glanced at him. "Are you sure this is the same thing?"
Although Bi De had never been to this place, he had overheard Peni mention earlier that underneath Aunt May's backyard shed was a huge underground base—a secret lair of Peter Parker from this world. It was filled with all sorts of high-tech equipment.
Clearly, this could not just be a simple shed.
"What do you mean..." Middle-aged Peter frowned in confusion. But in the next moment, his eyes widened in disbelief, and he stood frozen, exclaiming, "Oh my god!"
Aunt May pulled out a key and twisted it in what seemed to be a completely normal lock.
After a series of hidden verifications activated, the key glowed faintly red.
Suddenly, the seemingly ordinary wooden door transformed into a high-tech, futuristic entrance, silently fading into a bright white light, revealing... an elevator?
Bi De grinned and patted Middle-aged Peter on the shoulder before following Spider-Man Noir into the wooden shack.
The others followed suit.
Middle-aged Peter scoffed, "This place is way too flashy."
But his feet betrayed him as he obediently followed inside.
Inside, it was nothing like the outside.
What had looked like a small, ordinary shed was actually a high-tech, anti-gravity elevator, with cold, sleek metallic walls that screamed high-level security.
And the elevator had plenty of space.
Even with eight people and a set of spider-powered armor, it didn't feel crowded at all.
The elevator began to move, heading down.
Bi De's eyes involuntarily wandered down, as one light after another blinked on with the elevator's descent. Floating platforms, held up by webs, appeared before them.
Each platform held different items.
Some had clearly modified cars and motorcycles, others were stacked with computers, and there were even what looked like miniature planes.
This looked just like the Batcave next door!
From above, it truly resembled a massive spider's lair.
"Whoa!" Since entering, Miles had been constantly exclaiming in awe.
The others, however, didn't laugh at him.
Because, aside from Peni, who had been here before, everyone else wore expressions of wonder too.
