Chapter 57: Chapter 55: The Tail Is On Fire, So Pitiful!
"Okay, so is this the last batch to get on board?"
At the entrance to Laboratory #2, Ethan stood with James and several other employees, leading a procession of Pokémon onto a row of large trucks.
Their plan was to transport the Pokémon, as well as some of the lab equipment, to the new park that would soon be Pokémon Paradise.
"Yes, they're all in," James confirmed, climbing into the back of a truck to calm the more nervous Pokémon. Each vehicle would have at least one caretaker on board to monitor them during transport.
Ethan gave the signal, and one by one, the trucks rumbled away, forming a small convoy along the road. There had been a few transfers before; with this final shipment, Laboratory #2 would finally be clear--and the Pokémon would have a larger, more natural space for exploration.
---
About forty minutes later, the trucks pulled up to the gates of the park. The old sign overhead had been partially removed, awaiting rebranding.
As soon as Ethan got off the passenger seat, he clapped his hands.
"All right, everybody unload in an orderly fashion, no pushing!"
A parade of bright yellow and blue critters jumped out in neat rows: Pichu and Squirtle looked around curiously, their eyes wide. Their ears twitched, and soft cries drifted through the air:
"Pichu-pi!"
"Jenny... Jenney!"
By now, a modest crowd had gathered outside the gates. Locals and passersby, attracted by several similar truck arrivals, stopped to stare. At first there was silence, then excited murmurs:
"Oh, my gosh, they're adorable!"
"So this is Pokémon Paradise? The old zoo is becoming something new!"
"Will it be open to the public soon? This area could really use the business."
"Look, they're lining up all by themselves!"
Some recognized the Pokémon Biotechnology Company from the online buzz - Pichu and Squirtle were already minor Internet celebrities. Others whispered about the rumored price tag: "I heard they cost $300,000 each!" Nearby shopkeepers who had been struggling now watched with renewed hope that the park's revival would bring more customers.
Ethan led the procession inside, feeling like a teacher leading a class on a field trip.
---
Meanwhile, James lingered at the last truck for a final check. Climbing in, he immediately spotted two suspicious figures in the corner, a Squirtle and a Charmander sharing a bag of stolen snacks.
"Hey, you two!" he exclaimed in annoyance. "When did you steal these?"
The Squirtle, nicknamed Hydro, pointed accusingly at the Charmander, as if to suggest that Charmander had masterminded the theft. Charmander just looked away, feigning innocence. Sighing, James lifted them both by the scruff of their necks and set them on the floor.
"You know better than to steal snacks," he scolded, confiscating the half-eaten bag. "If you snack all day, you'll turn into little fatties! Now get in line."
Hydro whined, flailing his arms in protest, while Charmander quietly shoved the last two pieces of food into his mouth - chomp, chomp - his tail flame flickering contentedly. Nearby onlookers gasped.
"Oh, no! That poor Pokémon's tail is on fire!" someone shouted, rushing forward to help.
Another bystander grabbed her arm.
"Wait, I think that's normal. It must be a new species from the Pokémon Company!"
In fact, this was Charmander's first public appearance. People had just gotten used to Pichu and Squirtle, and here was a little orange lizard with a tail that kept burning. Speculation spread about how such a thing was genetically possible.
"Shouldn't they put that out?"
"Maybe it's been engineered so that it doesn't harm the Pokémon?"
"Who knows? This company has done so many impossible things."
---
Inside the park, the first batches of Pichu and Squirtle were already roaming near ponds, grassy hills and other newly landscaped areas. Former zoo employees, initially nervous about the unusual creatures, relaxed as the Pokémon eagerly approached them, accepting treats and attention.
When Ethan spotted a few workers near a group of Squirtle, he waved to them.
"How's it going? Still thinking about quitting?" he teased.
Laughter rippled through the small group:
"No way. They're much friendlier than I thought!"
"Honestly, it's a lot less stressful than dealing with those old zoo animals."
"Ethan, you can even dock my pay; I'm staying!"
Ethan laughed. "Glad to hear it. But don't underestimate them. They may be small, but they can really pack a punch when they go all out."
Almost on cue, a nearby Squirtle crashed headfirst into a large boulder, shattering it with a THUD. Everyone stared wide-eyed.
"Noted," one of the staff said, swallowing hard.
He was so startled that he accidentally dropped the tube of nutrient ointment he'd been using to feed another Squirtle, smearing some on his cheek. The Squirtle grunted in disapproval, hopped up, and licked the rest off his palm.
Ethan grinned sympathetically. "They won't hurt you if you treat them well. Their temperaments are stable - it's in their genes."
But the word "genes" only served to frighten the staff member even more, and he collapsed halfway to the grass in relief.
---
By dusk, the last wave of Pokémon had been assigned to their sleeping quarters. The old animal enclosures were being converted into open spaces, though some curious Pokémon, especially the newer arrivals, scampered off to explore the wooded hills, ignoring the lights out entirely.
Ethan stood at the base of a small slope, raised a whistle to his lips, and blew sharply. The piercing sound echoed, causing most of the Pokémon to trot back obediently. He noticed an orange glow in the distance: Charmander was still with Hydro.
"Where are those two troublemakers?" he muttered, pulling out his Pokémon Monitor.
He switched to Charmander's perspective. The screen flickered to show a dim, makeshift campfire. Charmander was pulling freshly fried eggs from the coals, handing two to Hydro before eating one himself. Ethan felt a vein pulse in his forehead.
"Raiding birds' nests for eggs already?" he groaned. "Unbelievable."
He remembered how, even back in the lab, these two had been accomplices, one distracting while the other stole. Charmander, once so quiet and well-behaved, had apparently learned all kinds of mischief from Hydro. Now unleashed, they were unstoppable.
Shaking his head, Ethan put the phone down. They'll come down when they're ready - and face the consequences, he decided. At least they're safe.
He strolled back to the main building, taking in the faint starlight on the sleeping park. Pokémon Paradise was officially up and running, still chaotic, still evolving, but undeniably alive with possibility.
The staff laughed together, Squirtle stood tall in the moonlight, and the glow of Charmander's tail flickered in the distance. This was no ordinary zoo.
Ethan felt a wave of satisfaction. This is just the beginning, he thought. One more step toward a future where humans and Pokémon truly coexist.
