Quirkless Hero

Chapter 123: Chapter 123 – Aftermath

The incident in Kamino Ward had seemingly come to a close. Officially, the media was told that Midoriya Izuku was rescued and that All Might had fought the enemy leader. However, the enemy ultimately escaped.

It was painted as a successful mission on the surface, but nobody could truly call it that. Not a single enemy was captured, and Midoriya himself was left gravely injured and hospitalized. In reality, it was a complete failure.

During Midoriya's hospital stay, his mother, Midoriya Inko, visited frequently, shedding countless tears. Seeing her child in such a state was heartbreaking for any mother.

Throughout this time, both All Might and Togata Mirio avoided meeting her directly.

They simply couldn't face her. Not only had Midoriya been forced to push through on his own, but in the end, they had failed to stop all-for-one. It was too shameful to bear.

Classmates and friends came to visit Midoriya often, celebrating his rescue and wishing him a speedy recovery. Midoriya responded to them with smiles, but once they left, he would lower his head in silence, burdened by heavy thoughts.

After spending a week in the hospital, All Might and Togata Mirio came by for their usual visit, waiting for Midoriya Inko to leave first—they still couldn't bring themselves to face her.

"Midoriya, how are you feeling?"

"...All Might... Mirio-senpai..."

Midoriya, who had been staring out the window, slowly turned his head and responded after a brief pause. He wasn't sure how to face the two of them.

"......."

All Might also fell into silence for a moment, then decided it was time to speak. While Midoriya's condition had been too severe before to bring up the [League of Villains], now they needed to clarify everything.

"Midoriya... that man... he gave you a [Quirk], didn't he?"

All Might's question left Midoriya silent and unable to speak. Finally, he nodded, giving his answer.

"And... you killed the villain, didn't you?"

Another question from All Might. Again, Midoriya remained quiet, though the weight of the truth was undeniable.

In the end, Midoriya Izuku slowly nodded again.

"......"

The inner conflict and pain All Might felt had been something he prepared for since All For One mentioned it. But hearing Midoriya personally admit to his actions still left him feeling heavy-hearted.

"So that's how it is..."

All Might sighed. Togata Mirio stood silently to the side, while Midoriya Izuku lowered his head, quietly waiting for the final judgment he knew was coming.

However, the harsh scolding he expected didn't arrive. Instead, All Might's warm hand landed on Midoriya's head. Midoriya looked up in surprise, only to see All Might gesture for him to keep quiet.

"Young Midoriya, let me tell you a little secret... That man you met, All For One—years ago, I was ready to kill him. You see the scar on his head? Back then, I nearly blew his head off."

"All Might...?"

Midoriya didn't understand the meaning behind All Might's words. But the hand on his head ruffled his seaweed-like hair into a messy state.

"Officer Tsukauchi has agreed to keep this under wraps. Kouta will also keep this strictly confidential. You don't need to worry about the media finding out anything negative."

"To put it simply, and though this might not sound entirely right, even heroes sometimes have to bend the rules a little."

"All Might...!!"

Hearing this, Midoriya felt both relieved and even more burdened.

Even after everything that had happened, they were still willing to believe in and support him. This made Midoriya feel an immense sense of guilt and self-blame. He believed things didn't have to be this way.

From the moment he struck down Muscular, Midoriya had already prepared himself to give up on his dream of becoming a hero. He thought he had accepted it.

With his head hanging low, tears streamed down his face. He couldn't even tell what kind of emotions he was feeling anymore. He was happy and relieved, but more than anything, he felt pain and torment.

"Don't worry too much... Things will get better."

Togata Mirio offered words of comfort, though seeing Midoriya in this state was just as hard on him.

"Mirio, let's go..."

All Might stood up. His purpose for coming had been to ask these questions and assure Midoriya that everything would be fine.

As All Might and Togata Mirio left the hospital, Nighteye was already waiting at the entrance.

The three of them had come together, but Nighteye hadn't joined them in visiting Midoriya. Instead, he stayed outside, waiting.

"Did you tell Midoriya about the future I saw?"

"No..."

All Might shook his head, reflecting on everything that had happened in the past few days.

"Young Midoriya knows that All For One has taken an interest in him, and he's aware that the existence of One For All has been exposed. But even he doesn't know why that man values him so much."

"And are you planning to keep this from him?"

Nighteye glanced toward Midoriya's room, worry etched on his face.

"Things are clearly heading in a bad direction. If this continues... that terrible future..."

"Nighteye!"

All Might's sharp tone cut him off. His voice was resolute.

"Young Midoriya was injured this badly to protect Kouta. Tell me... why do you think he did that?"

"..."

Nighteye fell silent, unable to respond. All Might's words left him with no room to argue. After all, this situation ultimately stemmed from his own mistakes.

Meanwhile, staring out the window, Midoriya Izuku felt his heart sink once again. He was grateful for All Might's words earlier... but...

The pain in Midoriya's heart wouldn't subside—not because of guilt over killing Muscular.

Instead... it was because Midoriya didn't feel even the slightest bit of guilt. Looking back on how he had utterly destroyed his enemy, he found himself thinking... it was only right.
