Chapter 9: The Cold Palace
Newborn babies are so fragile that they can be easily hurt, so apart from the times when they had to feed Yuanjiu, Hanxue and Aunt Yue rarely held her.
As days passed, Yuanjiu's bones gradually grew stronger, and only then did Hanxue and Aunt Yue occasionally take her outside the hall for a stroll.
The place where they lived was called the "Cold Palace," and those who were sent there were not allowed to leave at will.
Thus, they would simply took her back and forth just within the courtyard.
For Yuanjiu, who had been confined indoors for over a month, this was a rare treat.
At the very least, she could breathe some fresh air.
Her Wind-type abilities were gradually awakening and now she could use her mind to manipulate small objects.
This newfound ability brought a slight change to her usually aloof demeanor, and she occasionally rewarded Hanxue and Aunt Yue with a soft expression.
As for the previous assassination attempt, she had gradually put it behind her.
The three of them led a simple but content life.
Their favorite activity was moving a small table into the courtyard after sunset to enjoy the cool evening breeze.
They would place simple pastries and plain tea on the table.
Aunt Yue tended to the flowers and plants she had grown in the courtyard while chatting with Hanxue.
Occasionally, a topic that interest to Yuanjiu would come up, which make her couldn't resist trying to speak, however when she try to speak it only to produce babbling sounds.
At those moments, she would suddenly realize that she was now a baby whose their vocal cords not yet fully developed.
Each time, this would make Aunt Yue and Hanxue laugh uncontrollably, praising Yuanjiu for being so clever.
Yuanjiu could only remain speechless—how could anyone determine a one-month-old baby's intelligence?
That evening, as usual, the three of them moved into the courtyard.
Aunt Yue was watering the flowers, Hanxue was singing to Yuanjiu, and Yuanjiu, with her eyes closed, was practicing to control the flow of her energy.
Suddenly, she opened her eyes.
She sensed a group of people heading their way toward here.
"Your Highness, your status forbids you from entering the Cold Palace. If His Majesty finds out about it, there will be trouble," came the voice of a young maid.
"Silence. It's just past the palace guards' patrol time. That Consort Li actually gave birth to a child; I must go and take a look," said another voice.
She also had given birth to a daughter just over a month ago, five days before Yuanjiu, and now that her confinement period was over, so she had come to investigate.
"Your Highness, His Majesty doesn't even care about the Ninth Princess. Why bother yourself like this?"
"Even so, I won't feel at ease until I've checked things out by myself."
...
Aunt Yue and Hanxue both heard the conversation growing closer.
Aunt Yue gave Hanxue a look, and Hanxue nodded, then carried Yuanjiu lightly into the inner chamber.
