Chapter 4: Chance Encounter
"That class was freakin' amazing!" Victor exclaimed as he and Asher walked to their rooms.
"Yeah it was. The way she explained the concept of time magic was amazing as well. I haven't heard anyone explain it like that before." Asher replied.
They both walked in and Asher immediately laid down on his bunk.
"Are you that lazy?" Victor asked.
"Give me a break, I've had a hectic day. Especially from the duel." Asher replied. "It was probably the most interesting thing that's happened all day."
"You think?" Asher sensed a sarcastic tone in Victor's voice. He got up and began to change his clothes.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm gonna go take Professor Orion up on his offer." Asher replied and walked out before closing the door behind him.
As he walked through the hallway, he saw someone watching him from a corridor.
"I know who you are. You're Aethera Jardel." Asher said to her.
"Am I that famous?" Aethera asked.
"You're the first princess of the entire kingdom. Who wouldn't know you?"
"You do have a point. I saw your match against James Sorrel, you were impressive."
"You think? Although it did seem he was holding back." Asher said as he shrugged his shoulders.
"I would know if he was holding back. He wasn't, you on the other hand was the one who was holding back." Aethera began.
"How did you come to such a conclusion?"
"It's simple, you didn't use magic until the end. And when you did, you used a spell that was naturally weaker than your opponent's."
"What does that prove?"
"It proves that you were the one holding back as in a battle between two mages that are on par with each other, the one who's magic is naturally stronger than the other would win."
"So? What does that have to do with me holding back?"
"You really plan on keeping this facade till the end huh?" Aethera asked rhetorically. "The both of you were not on equal footing hence the reason why your flames were able to evaporate his water."
She's good. Asher smiled. As expected of the princess.
"What are you smiling about?"
"Nothing much."
"You're suspicious. The mana I can sense from you isn't normal. It's old, really old."
Hmm. Impressive, no one's been able to sense the state of my mana to this extent. Asher thought.
"Moreover, where are you going?" Aethera asked.
"I'm going to see Professor Orion, he offered to be my mentor after I won the duel against James."
"Is that so? Well, I have to get going. I'll see you around." Aethera said as she walked away.
Beautiful. Asher turned around as that singular word crossed his thoughts.
He walked towards Professor Orion's office, he stopped at the door and was about to knock when he heard a voice from within.
"Come in."
He opened the door and walked in, he instantly felt immense pressure on his body. He instantly defended with a spell of his own.
This is gravity magic, I need to use the same intensity to balance things. Asher thought.
"Impressive, you were able to defend against it. The only people besides you who have been able to defend against that spell are Arin Jardel and his sister Aethera Jardel." Professor Orion stated.
The prince and his sister huh? That means there's something interesting about them if they're able to defend against this. Asher's thoughts flew.
"So I can assume that you've decided to take me up on my offer?" Professor Orion said.
"Yeah. That's what I came here for."
"Alright. From what you've shown to me, you can use gravity magic. What other form of magic can you use?"
"These." Asher gathered the mana in his hands and what Professor Orion saw shocked him.
"Impressive! Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth, Air, Light and Dark!," Professor Orion's eyes were gleaming as he spoke. "So you mean you can use all these alongside gravity magic?"
"I can use every kind of magic known actually, including Time and Sound magic."
"Impressive Mr. Blackwood. But, you seems to be emitting low amounts of mana, as if you want to hide your aura."
"It's nothing like that sir, it's just that if I let my aura out that much I won't have any mana left in me to perform spells." Asher laughed as he scratched the back of his head.
"You're an interesting student. I like your style."
"Thank you for the compliment. But it seems we're done here, so can I go?"
"Yes, you may leave. We shall speak another time." Professor Orion said. "Oh! Before I forget, I see you've made an acquaintance of the princess."
"H-how did you know that?" Asher asked.
"I can sense her mana around you and judging by how the mana is reacting to yours, she didn't seem to harbor any I'll intentions towards you so I assumed that that was the case."
"You could say that. I'll be leaving now professor."
"Have a nice day." Professor Orion called out. Asher Blackwood. An interesting child, he has now drawn the attention of the princess and in time, the prince shall grow curious of him as well.
As Asher walked through the hallway on his way to his room, he saw a familiar face.
"James Sorrel!" Asher called out on the top of his voice.
James' body froze in fear, he'd known who's voice that was and knew it would only bode trouble.
"What do you want peasant? Are you here to laugh at me after disgracing me in our duel?" James turned around trying to walk away.
"Wait." Asher put his hand on James' shoulder to stop him but James brushed his hand off.
Asher shrugged and continued on his way back to his room. As he opened the door, he met Victor standing awkwardly and smiling sheepishly.
"Victor what's… wrong?" He saw the reason for Victor's actions, the firs
t princess herself, Aethera Jardel was in his room sitting on his bed.
Oh brother! This is gonna be a long night.
