Chapter 5: Friendships Forged
"What do you want?" Asher asked leaning himself on the wall.
"Is that how you treat a guest?" The princess asked.
"She's right Asher, you shouldn't speak to her like that. She's the princess you know." Victor emphasized.
"It doesn't matter, well to me she's trespassing right now." Asher added.
"I just came to see where you sleep and I have to say, what fine work the both of you have done here." Aethera complimented.
"Haha! Thank you princess." Victor scratched the back of his head clearly flustered.
"You're blushing." Asher laughed.
"No I'm not." Victor replied.
"Then why are your cheeks red?"
"It doesn't matter."
"Well, since I've seen where you currently sleep then expect frequent visits from me." The princess said and left the room, she turned around. "Meet me in the library later tomorrow Asher. I have something to tell you." And she left.
"Woah! The princess is totally into you!" Victor exclaimed but on seeing his friend's expressionless face he stopped talking.
"That's bollocks. Absolute nonsense. I'm a peasant and the princess is the pinnacle of royalty. So what would she want with me?"
"It doesn't matter. Maybe your status doesn't matter."
"Well, I'll see her tomorrow and hear what she has to say." Asher said and laid down on his bed and slept off.
"Seth, come on. We'll be late." A lady said.
"Even if we are, it'll just be by 2 minutes so it wouldn't matter much." Seth insisted.
"I won't have you being tardy on your first day as the king's guard."
"Mother, we won't be late. I can get you there instantly."
"I know, you're the fastest man in the kingdom for a reason." His mother said.
"Yes, yes. I'm ready so can we go now?" Seth asked.
"Yes, let's go."
He took her up in his arms and sped off.
"-sher! Asher!" Asher awoke to Victor tugging him.
"Wh-what's wrong?" Asher asked sleepily.
"You were talking in your sleep and then you started smiling." Victor told him.
Hmm. That dream again. Why does it always have to be that life? Asher thought to himself.
"It's nothing, just had a nice dream."
Victor smiled maliciously, "About you getting married to the princess?" He raised his brows and then laughed.
Asher frowned. "It isn't funny."
"You may kiss the bride." Victor mimicked what a priest would say at a wedding and kept on laughing. "Muah!"
"Stop that." Asher laughed as well as he shoved Victor's head and walked towards the bathroom.
They both got ready and went to attend their classes. The day went by uneventful and they both attended all the classes for the day.
"Are you going to see her?" Victor asked.
"Yeah, she should be there by now so… see ya later." Asher said and made his way to the library.
When he got there, he saw different students scattered about, some picking books off of the shelf and some sitting at a desk reading.
"Psst. Asher." A voice beckoned to him in a volume that would be a far cry from what would be called a whisper.
He turned around and saw the princess sitting alone. He walked towards her and say down. The moment he did, every head in the room turned his way.
"I hate this sort of attention you know." He said to her.
"Well, it doesn't matter. I'm glad you didn't turn down my request." She smiled at him which made him uneasy but he kept his face calm.
"Well, what did you want to tell me?"
"I want you to be my friend."
"Huh?!"
"Shhh!" Everyone in the room turned to him, shutting him up as his voice had become too loud at that moment.
"Sorry." He said to the others and then he turned to the princess. "Why do you want me to be your friend? A-and is that why you called me here?"
"You could say so." She replied.
"Ok, tell me why you want me to be your friend."
"Well, I don't know how to explain it."
"Explain it in any way you can, I'll understand."
"You know I'm the princess and most people don't ever want to associate with me."
"Why is that? To me you're just as human as the next person."
"It's because of my brother, he's the reason no one wants to associate with me."
"What did he do?"
"Well, back then my brother announced to the whole school that if you're not strong enough, you can't be his or my friend and that anyone who wants to be our friend should be able to beat him in a fight."
"Seriously. Then I should leave, I don't want any trouble."
"No, please don't go. I truly want you to be my friend and moreover my brother wants that."
"Hmm. Is that why you reached out to me? Just because your brother wants it?"
"No that's not it. I've been wanting a friend since forever and seeing you fight and the way you act, it seems like you're the right one." Aethera said to him. "My brother watched your fight against James Sorrel and was impressed with your skills."
"Is that so? Then I'm honored." Asher laughed.
"Well, do you?"
"Do I what?" Asher asked scratching his head as he spoke.
"Do you want to be my friend?"
"I'll think about it."
"What's there to think about? It's just a yes or no question."
"Alright fine. I'll be your friend. But you better not be clingy."
"Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you." Aethera jumped for joy and was about to leave when she turned around.
"What?" Asher asked as he saw that her cheeks were read meaning she was shy to say what was was next. "You can talk."
"Well, I'm inviting you to my place this weekend. My brother and my parents want to meet you."
Seriously? Even the king and queen themselves? Asher thought.
"Why do they want to meet with me?" He asked.
"Well, my brother has been talking about you an awful lot and my parents want to know more about the boy who has caught the prince's attention."
"Alright. I'll be there."
She walked up to him and kissed him on the cheek. "Thank you." Then she ran out.
Everyone in the library stared at him suspiciously with most of their eyes widened in surprise.
"What?" Asher asked and walked out of the library as well.
