Chapter 55: Actions and worries
As a maid of Erika Bauer had to wait outside with all the other maids.
She couldn't let go of her anxiety all this time.
Even though she talked with the other maids, exchanging greetings and talking about their masters she was still kept thinking unlikely things.
Things were going smoothly for her until now at least. But soon her heart fainted as drops of sweats slid down her spine. She was frozen still.
She heard the noise that she recognised very well and didn't want to hear.
Everyone in the room were shocked. They couldn't recognise the loud noise that came in every few moments interval.
But Bauer knew very well this sound of the very familiar Walther P38 side arm pistol that every officer in the Wehrmacht carried, as did she.
Unable to control herself she rushed inside the ballroom.
"Hey, what are you doing?! You can't go there." Others in the room screamed to her.
But she ignored them. She went straight into the room to see what had happened.
All her premonitions came true as she was horrified to see the scene in front of her.
Five fully armed and armoured knights lay flat on the ground, their shiny metal armour now stained red with blood.
Two of them lay still without slightest movement while the others were screaming in pain and agony.
Blood was gushing out rapidly from their body.
Bauer noticed that Erika was pointing her guns towards them as the audience stood frozen in their spot horrified of the scene before them.
The prince and his party was also horrified.
Prince Theodore and Paul turned pale as they saw five of the best knights of the kingdom lay dead and gravely injured in front of them.
Weilding was a little bit more composed and he stood in front of the prince trying to shield him.
Hanna was on her knees crying but Bauer noticed that she wasn't injured.
Maruschka who had tried to comfort her was frozen in shock herself.
She could never believe that the calm and gentle Erika was capable of killing someone.
Erika noticed Bauer in the distance and shouted to her.
"Bauer, we have to get out of here now."
"Maruschka, Hanna wecan no longer stay here. Let's go."
Hanna regained some sense. Maruschka horrified as she was, helped Hanna up.
Maruschka was ready to leave with Erika. There was nothing for her in the capital anyways.
But she still hesitated as if some invisible hands held her legs.
Hanna on the other hand was more emotional. Her father was in custody so she was unable to make a choice.
"B-but what about my father?" She said in a broken voice.
"Guards, take them down." The prince finally got back his composer.
Suddenly, prince's secret guard students rushed out from the group of students.
They dashed towards Erika and her friends.
"Weilding call more knights now!" Prince instructed.
The number of guard students were more. 10 guards rushed at Erika with daggers in their hands.
Erika's gun became empty as she shot two of them, knocking them down.
The guards students also realised that this was the maximum number of bullets Erika had and dashed towards her.
Without a chance to reload her weapon as the guards came at her she screamed.
"BAUER!"
In an instant Bauer brought out her gun and shot the guards.
However, more guards and knights entered the room as Erika and Bauer reloaded their guns.
"Shit, we have to get out of here. Hanna, Maruschka we must go."
Bauer came and pulled Maruschka with her left hand.
Maruschka followed her without question.
Hanna was still hesitant.
"I can't leave my father." She was crying.
Without the time to explain, Erika pulled her hand and took her along with her.
Both of them shot some more knights who approached them as they dashed outside the academy.
"Where should we go milady?" Bauer asked once they were out of the academy premises and no more knights were following therm.
"Let's go to my father's house. We can use his carriage to get out of the capital."
They were still holding on to Maruschka and Hanna as they run.
Both of them were acting obedient and silent.
They didn't spoke anything as they went to the duke's mansion nearby.
As they stood in front of the mansion they saw the gates were wide open and left unguarded.
There was no sign of life inside and various things that were once neatly arranged inside were now scattered all over.
As they entered the courtyard and walked towards the stables, an old coachman driving the duke's private carriage approached them.
"Lady Erika, Thank God you're fine." The coachman smiled getting down from the carriage.
He explained what had transpired in the house at that time.
"While Lord Landsturm came to visit the duke a platoon of knights forcefully entered the mansion and arrested both them." He explained.
"All the servants have already left for the territory. I'm the last person left." He said.
Thinking for sometimes, Erika signalled Bauer to get into the cart.
"Take the four of us to the territory as fast as you can. We have to leave the capital now."
Bauer and Maruschka got into the carriage while Erika pulled the crying Hanna in.
The coachman drove the carriage as fast as possible.
Knights reinforcements also arrived but the carriage had gone too far by then.
Once the carriage started moving and was out of the capital, the gravity of the situation caught in.
This was the first time Erika killed someone. She felt a bit shocked at herself.
"Could the situation have been handled better without blood shed?" She thought.
Hanna now snapped. She lost all her remaining composer.
"Why, why Erika?! Why'd you pull me away like that?!" She cried.
Tears started to roll down her cheeks.
"What will happen to my father? What will the prince do to him? Sob, sob"
"Don't worry Hanna. I promise, I will save your father and my father as well. No harm will come to them. I guarantee."
Erika tried to console her.
Hanna buried her face in Erika's bosom and cried her eyes out as she clenched Erika's clothes.
Erika patted her back and tried to calm her down.
"Don't worry, since both are high ranking nobles, there's no way the prince can harm them directly."
Maruschka sitting on the opposite side felt the shock as well.
Though she had seen death before, what she saw today was completely unfathomable.
There's no way anyone can believe that the king's knights could be killed in a second by an 18 year old girl and her maid.
She wanted to ask Erika what happened but Bauer spoke first.
"Lady Maruschka, please forget about the incident. A new life awaits you in the Raubenbraum territory. You'll understand everything once we're there."
Maruschka also deduced that now is not the right time to ask. She trusted Erika.
"Milady, how will you rescue them from the capital?" Bauer asked after a few hours of journey.
By now both Hanna and Maruschka were tired and fell into deep sleep.
Maruschka had now changed sides and she slept with her head on Erika's shoulders.
Erika was sitting in center of the seat on the front side while Bauer on the rear.
Hanna's head was on Erika's lap and her legs were folded on the seat due to the size of the carriage.
Erika caressed Hanna's head as she spoke.
"I'm planning to use the Luftwaffe. They can fly into the capital and rescue them both." Erika spoke in a serious voice.
"I will specify the plans once we reach the territory. I will make the prince pay for what he did."
"By the way what about her mother?" Bauer asked pointing at Hanna.
"Let her wake up first. I will talk to her and if necessary, take a detour through the Landsturm territory and pick her mother up."
Meanwhile in the academy, everything was quite.
Once Erika had left, the prince left the hall as well. He was still shocked from what happened.
The ceremony was broken up as soon as the commotion died and everyone left for their respective rooms.
However, they were still horrified with the day's events.
Never before in the history of Festland continent has a noble been convicted publicly like this. Moreover, the 18 year old girl was able to knock out the knights all by herself.
At night, the prince sat with in a private room with all the other nobles.
They also couldn't understand how Erika was able to escape the knights and prince's personal guards.
"It must've been for her dark magic." One of the nobles said.
This was the official narrative that prince and prime minister pushed for.
Though Theodore knew very well that the dark magic was just a fabrication he made.
The prince heard the nobles talking amongst themselves about what possibly went wrong.
He got impatient sitting with them and wanted to leave.
"Gentlemen, it doesn't matter what happened. This was just a minor mishap. Tomorrow we will join our armies at the border and attack."
He said as he stood up.
"You must be tired now. Let's end this meeting here."
The prince left the dimly lit room and the nobles bowed to him.
They also left one by one and went to their houses.
The next day they along with their respective entourage set out for the border where there armies were located.
