She Was Condemned as a Villain, But After Baking Bread She Changed Her Job To Become A Saint!?

Chapter 1.3

Chapter 1.3

I’d also like to make savoury treats like sandwiches, tartines, and burgers…

“Will everyone be surprised?”

Well, of course they will. Afterall, it’s completely different from their prison bread.

The problem is whether they’d accept it.

No matter how delicious it might be, people normally tend to react negatively to things that are too different or outside their understanding.

“But I hope you’ll eat it.”

Before I knew it, the sky outside had become much brighter.

Prayerfully, I looked up at the clear, blue sky.

◇*◇

“Ah! It’s my lady!”

The moment I entered the dining hall, nearly all the children burst into cheers.

There was an orphanage attached to a temple. It was not a big temple, so the orphanage itself wasn’t either, but it had a total of 15 children there between the ages of three to fourteen.

It’s a different place from the remote temple where I served as a low-ranking priestess for a year, but I still don’t mind helping out at this temple once a week.

Plus, I think I’m quite popular here.

“Are you all well? I brought something really good today!”

“Eh? Something really good?”

“What is it?”

Their eyes as they looked at me were suddenly filled with expectation and sparkle.

I smiled slyly,  raised the basket I held in my arms and declared loudly.

“Bread!”

In an instant, the children all sighed in great disappointment.

“Eh? Bread~?”

“What’s so good about bread, my lady?”

“I hate bread.”

“Me too. It tastes bad.”

Hmm. As expected.

Okay, okay. Let’s see if I can turn that reaction around!

“This bread is special. Take a good look.”

Walking over to the children,  I took the cloth off the bread basket.

Inside were thinly sliced baguettes and a heap of shiny butter rolls.

“Huh!?”

Their eyes widened upon seeing the bread.

“Well? Have you ever seen bread like this before?”

The children shook their heads in surprise.

“U-uh, no. Never…”

“Hmm, it’s different from usual… Hey, are you sure this is bread?”

Everyone looks intrigued. Good, good, good!

I checked to make sure the priestesses had finished placing soup on the long table before guiding everyone to their seats.

After I placed thinly sliced baguettes and butter rolls on each child’s bread plate, we all said a prayer before the meal.

Then, I clapped to get everyone’s attention.

“Everyone, if possible, please try to eat it without dipping it in the soup first?”

As I said before, bread in this world is very hard, so it’s common to eat it dipped in soup or stew. If I hadn’t said anything, they would have just drunk it down with the soup right away. Well, I guess they’ll still notice the difference from the usual bread, but what I really want is for them to savour the true flavour of the bread.

“Eh, without dipping it in the soup?”

Max, the red-haired boy who was the leader of the children, looked a little worried for a moment that his teeth might break if he did that. But needless to say, he took a butter roll in his hand and I watched as his eyes widened in surprise.

“Whoa! This… this round one! Touch it! It’s fluffy!”

“Huh!? Bread? Fluffy!? Impossible!”

“It’s true! It’s so soft! Is this really bread?”

“This really is bread. It’s her ladyship’s special bread. Now, eat up.”

The moment they heard those words, the children all dug into their  butter rolls.

“Umph!”

“Oh, this is so good!”

“What is this? It’s delicious!”

With widened eyes, the children raised their voices in cheers.

“This is the first time I’ve ever had anything like this!”

“It’s so fluffy and soft!”

“It’s white, beautiful, sweet, and delicious!”

“Is there more? I want more!”

The children were in a frenzy. Hehehe, good, good! What a wonderful reaction!

The priestesses who had been helping out were also wide-eyed and stared at each other in surprise at the children’s reaction.

“Hey, try the thin one too. It’s really good!”

“It’s true! It’s crispy on the outside, but the inside is so soft!”

I peeked at the face of the oldest girl, who was staring at the baguette in utter shock.

“How is it?”

“It’s… it’s really delicious! It’s soft, but it’s different from the fluffy round one… um… I guess you could say that it’s more springy…”
