Chapter 743: Chapter 722 ( Verbergen attack - XIII )
"Enemies to the front!" - exclaimed an elf as he watched the demons rush against them - "Brace for impact!"
"Shields up!" - roared the leader of the first company - "The demons won't stop us!"
"Hai!" - Verbergen's inhabitants exclaimed.
"There are those scum, come on, their heads will adorn our walls!" - exclaimed the general of the second company before running alongside his brothers.
* * * * *
"It has begun" - said Cloud seriously as he looked at the suicide squad following them - "You know the deal, you will fight against the first company of demons, if you manage to survive to the end, you can return to Verbergen as heroes!"
The lions looked at each other before nodding weakly. This was the best deal they had, so they didn't even hesitate, they were aware of their innate strength, so they quickly ran against their enemies.
Cloud nodded calmly as he pondered his next move.
"Will we go in when they all die?" - Tio asked as she raised an eyebrow.
"Exactly" - Cloud replied as he shook his head - "For now we'll stay out of it."
* * * * *
"Shit!" - exclaimed the first company general as he bit his lip at the sight of how a group of lion men were slowly destroying his part of the army - "Weren't they our allies!"
"Something must have gone wrong at Verbergen, my lord!" - A soldier exclaimed.
"Tell me something I can't see with my own eyes!" - roared the general as he pounded the table as he listened to his subordinates slowly being wiped out - "Give me a damage report!"
"My lord, during the last 30 minutes, we have lost 1/3 of our men, along with the fall of 5 of our lieutenants!" - The soldier exclaimed in fear.
"And our enemies?" - The general asked neutrally.
"They have lost 5 of their men..." - replied the soldier while swallowing a huge amount of saliva.
"Only five?!" - exclaimed the general with fury as he took all the documents he had on his desk and threw them on the floor - "Is this some kind of joke!"
"I'm sorry, my lord, but the lions have been making multiple ambushes, besides, they are a small number which makes them hard to find in the middle of the forest" - replied the soldier as he trembled.
"Go out and inform our soldiers to increase the security of our perimeter!" - roared the general as he watched his subordinate run out of the command tent - "God, this has to be some kind of a joke..."
The general quickly came out of the tent and began to check the status of his troops, noticing how morale was low, which was bad even with their numerical superiority.
"My lord, we have detected a group of lions to the northeast" - said a soldier as he ran to the general.
"I want you to hold your positions, this may be a trap!" - The general exclaimed seriously as he frowned.
"My lord, this is a good opportunity to eliminate them once and for all, and even if this should turn out to be a trap, we still have numerical superiority" - replied one of the lieutenants as the soldiers frowned.
"Have I given you permission to speak, soldier?" - The general asked with a frown.
The lieutenant was silent before shaking his head.
"I thought so" - snorted the general before ordering them not to follow the lions.
The lieutenant maintained his silence, although inside he had already thought of the method in order to be able to initiate an independent operation, after all, he couldn't let these merits disappear like a corpse inside a maze.
"Get ready, we are going to attack" - said the lieutenant as he retreated.
"But sir, the general ordered no one to attack" - replied one of his subordinates.
"I am your direct leader, not him, and we are not going to waste this opportunity, tell your comrades and all those who wish to participate that we will start in 15 minutes, and I hope no one will tell about this to the general" - said the lieutenant neutrally.
The subordinate looked at his superior, and then in the direction where the general had withdrawn before nodding weakly.
And just as the lieutenant said, a squad quickly went to the place where they had received the news of the lion men's presence, although the general did not discover it until the bad news came.
* * * * *
"Is this the place?" - The lieutenant asked with a frown as he did not sense the presence of any living thing.
"That's right" - replied the soldier.
"Check the surroundings!" - exclaimed the lieutenant as he looked around seriously, though his expression quickly changed when he heard the shout of one of his subordinates - "What's going on!"
"Sir, it's a trap!" - A soldier exclaimed as he watched a group of lion men leap at them from the branches of the trees.
"What are you doing, use your spears and mow those beasts down!" - roared the lieutenant as he watched the demons raise their spears, though before he could rejoice, he saw another group run from the bushes - "Shit, it's a two-step ambush!"
The demons watched in terror as the wild lions leapt out with fierce expressions.
"We've got you, little lambs ~!" - roared a lion as he grabbed the neck of a demon and ripped its head off, only to take the spear he held in his inert hands and hurl it at another group, who didn't know what decision to make, whether to continue with their spears raised or dodge.
The lions quickly began to create a mess with their attacks as the demons shouted.
"Second squad, magic bombardment, it doesn't matter if they hit our allies!" - Roared the lieutenant.
"B-But..." - Said a wizard in fear.
"Just do it!" - roared the lieutenant again as he nodded when he saw his subordinates begin to follow his instructions.
"We already knew you were going to do that" - grinned the leader of the lion group.
"What are you talking about?" - The lieutenant asked, though his expression changed when he saw a bloody claw appear at his side.
"I-it wasn't a two-step ambush, it was a three-step ambush..." - The lieutenant said as he swallowed saliva.
"Exactly, we didn't attack with our whole group" - said the lion leader while squinting - "Let's finish them off, without mercy!"
"ROAR!" - the lions roared in acceptance of his orders as they began to dismember their prey.
The lieutenant quickly ran to where his soldiers were in greater numbers and organized the defensive, and although they were in a bad situation, they had managed to eliminate much of the first group of lions that had ambushed them, that left his group that had suffered heavy losses, against a small army of lions that had lost about 25% of their soldiers.
"Initiate the counterattack! Lancers forward, mages prepare the attack, I want half to use offensive magic while the rest use defensive magic!" - exclaimed the lieutenant while wiping his sweat - "If we keep fighting like before, we won't get out of here alive!"
"Hai!" - exclaimed the soldiers as they watched the lions back off slightly as they saw that they couldn't continue their slaughter with the ease as before.
"Now, magic bombardment!" - exclaimed the lieutenant as he watched the rain of elemental magics fly out in the direction of the lions, which managed to barely dodge the attack, or at least a group of them while the others were consumed by the magical attacks.
"Shit!" - The lion leader exclaimed as he ordered a strategic retreat.
"What do we do, my lord?" - A soldier asked as he looked at the lieutenant.
"We have no choice but to continue this operation" - answered the lieutenant seriously, more than anything because he knew that if he returned without results, he would have to accept the consequences of his actions, that's why he had decided to continue and finish with the lions, so at least he could make up for his mistakes and he wouldn't have to die at the hands of his boss.
"Ok" - nodded the soldiers as they walked towards the forest while making a security perimeter to prevent another enemy attack, not noticing how a pair of eyes were watching them from the top of a tree.
"They are much smarter than I thought they would be" - Yue said as she frowned. She had thought that during this attack, the lions would kill at least 90% of the demonic forces before they all died, though now she saw that things didn't turn out as she thought.
"They possess a strong will to live" - Tio replied as she folded her arms - "Don't you think so too, Cloud?"
"He went out to check on the other platons" - Yue said while giving her a blank look.
"Right, he said he would help those soldiers" - Tio mused as she started to think - "By the way, don't you think it would be much faster for us to finish the job instead of having to wait for those two groups to kill each other?"
"I told Cloud the same thing, but he seems to want to wait, possibly to make it look like the first unit is keeping us busy" - Yue replied while shaking her head...
