Chapter 745: Chapter 724 ( Attack on Verbergen - XV )
The battle continued between the two sides, unaware that one of the demon army's companies had been completely annihilated.
"Casualty count!" - Verbergen's defense army leader exclaimed as he wiped his sweat.
"My lord, we have lost 40% of our soldiers" - replied a soldier regretfully as he bowed his head in helplessness.
The army leader gritted his teeth before letting out a heavy sigh - "Have we received any signals from Lord Ulfric?"
"I'm sorry, but nothing so far, my lord" - the soldier replied with concern - "Did the demons surround us and go directly against our civilians?"
"Impossible, the evacuation is a secret matter, and even if someone were to reveal this information, it would be too late by the time this would be received by our enemies" - replied the army leader as he started to think, though his expression changed when he heard how a soldier came running in his direction - "I hope this is good news!"
"My lord, we got the signal from our brothers who are helping with the evacuation!" - exclaimed the soldier excitedly - "Everything went as planned, our civilians are in a safe place!"
"Perfect!" - exclaimed the leader of the group as he let out a sigh of relief - "I want you to order a retreat, and don't enter the city, I want us to follow the path from the forest!"
"Ok!" - exclaimed the soldiers as they ran to their allies so they could give the orders.
"This is perfect" - said the leader of the defense army before starting with the preparations.

"I want a casualty report!" - exclaimed the general of the second company of the demon army - "And I want it to include the casualties of the other armies!"
"My lord, this will take a few minutes in order to gather the information" - replied a soldier.
"And why haven't you started?" - The general asked neutrally.
"I-right away, my lord!" - exclaimed the soldier as he ran off.
The other generals thought the same thing, and the news was not satisfactory when they heard the results. Yes, they managed to defeat their enemies again and again, the problem was that they too had lost many of their troops.
The difference between the number of troops had been made up by the difference in base powers, that meant that the demons were much more numerous, but the inhabitants of Verbergen were stronger.
"What are your orders, my lord?" - The demonic soldier asked.
"Let's take a break before we start the new attack, we can't exhaust ourselves or we will end up giving them what they want" - answered the general. He was sure that they would be victorious from this operation - "Although I think we'd better go ask our queen".
"Would you like me to send a letter, my lord?" - The soldier asked.
"No, I'll go myself, I want you guys to rest for now" - replied the general as he got up from his seat and walked out of the tent, a decision the other leaders thought.

[Done, I'm not going to intervene anymore, I've done my part and now I'm retiring, what happens now is Verbergen's inhabitants' problem, although I have to warn you, if one of the demons goes beyond Verbergen, well, I'm going to have to attack...]
"Relax, my target is the city, not its inhabitants, though it's a pity my soldiers can't get the slaves they wanted" - Cattleya said while shaking her head.
She was in a tent in the middle of the joint camp of the generals, this they did for her safety.
[I wish you good luck, or whatever, though I have to give you one last warning...]
"Does it have to do with Verbergen?" - Cattleya asked as she raised an eyebrow.
[No... I just want to tell you to watch out for the high priest, something tells me he's more dangerous than you think]
"Really?" - Cattleya asked in surprise, though she quickly shook her head - "I understand, I'll keep your warning in mind, though it's not like we'll become enemies just like that."
Cloud didn't reply further, he simply remained silent, though his words seemed to get the result he wanted after all, Cattleya remained thoughtful.
"My queen, one of the generals wants to talk to you" - said one of her maidservants.
"I said I didn't want anyone to interrupt me" - said Cattleya with a frown, after all, she was in the middle of thoughts.
"He says it's important, it's war related, my queen" - replied the maid.
"Ok, tell him to come in" - Cattleya said neutrally.
The maid quickly went out and returned with the general.
"Tell me what you wish" - said Cattleya while squinting her eyes.
"I want you to give me my orders, my queen" - replied the general as he bowed his head.
"It is simple, we will make a direct attack against Verbergen, in fact, I will take command in the operation" - said Cattleya as she stood up from her throne and walked slowly to the general.
"Is this a good idea, my queen?" - The general asked as he looked up.
Cattleya gave him a neutral look that froze the general, who quickly ducked his head because he felt like he might die at any moment.
The demon queen was not going to let anyone but her, be responsible for taking the city of Verbergen, after all, this was the highest honor one could get. Putting that aside, now that Cloud had said he was leaving, it meant it was safe to go out and directly lead her army.
"I understand, I will choose my best men to serve as guards to prevent trouble" - replied the general as he took a long breath because he knew there was no way the queen would pass up this opportunity.
"It's good to hear that you have a good head on your shoulders" - Cattleya replied as she nodded, though her expression changed when she heard how her subordinate knocked on the door again to inform her that the other generals were outside - "I see that you are not the only one with the idea of coming to talk to me, though I don't want to explain myself again, go give them their orders."
"As you command, my lady!" - The general exclaimed as he quietly withdrew.
"Good thing it's all over, now all that's left is to give the final hammering" - said Cattleya as she walked towards a mirror and smiled slightly at the sight of her black armor, a symbol as ruler of the demon clan - "Ok, let's go!"
* * * * *
"Is it really a good idea that we didn't intervene in your fight?" - Tio asked as she raised an eyebrow.
"I said I was going to make sure the demons didn't annihilate the defense forces" - Cloud replied as he shook his head - "And if they're able to do it on their own merit, it's all the better, after all, we won't be able to solve all their problems"
"I understand that point, although I feel that if we had intervened in the right way, their casualties would be much less" - said Tio as she started to think - "Anyway, I guess it's no longer necessary to keep thinking about this, not when it's all over".
At this moment, Cloud, Yue and Tio, were watching as the defense army were slowly walking towards the large Haltina maze.
"Won't Ulfric-dono be angry when I heard that we didn't intervene during the war?" - Yue asked with boredom.
"I don't care if he gets angry, I'm not the father of those soldiers who jumped into the battlefield to defend their people" - answered Cloud while shaking his head - "Anyway, we'd better go back."
"Ok" - nodded the two girls, although they didn't go directly to the labyrinth, but stayed in the outer area of Verbergen so they could make sure of the safety of the survivors.
"Isn't this a bit hypocritical of us?" - Tio asked as she frowned.
"No, we're just completing the contract" - Cloud replied with a serene look - "Besides, we did help in the battle, though not as they thought."
"Loophole" - Yue mused as she gave Cloud a blank look.
"Where did you learn that from?" - Cloud asked as he raised an eyebrow.
"It came out during a conversation with Kaori" - replied Yue as she shook her head - "It was during a conversation about what she watched on TV."
"Ok, I understand" - nodded Cloud as he started to think - "Anyway, our work is about to end, just like this war".
"We didn't do much, although that's good, we haven't stopped fighting and training, so I'm tired" - said Yue as she started stretching her arms - "Hmm ~!"
"You have a point" - Tio muttered as she frowned - "I guess I'm also a bit tense with everything we've been doing for the past few days, that's why I'm overthinking things."
Cloud didn't say anything, he just remained silent because he honestly wasn't interested neither in the war, nor in its participants, that's why he was so quiet.
"Anyway, let's go" - Cloud said as he looked at a nearby tree and jumped on the branch. The girls quickly followed him as the trio jumped from branch to branch to prevent the soldiers from seeing them.
