Chapter 14: New Discoveries II
Damian's POV
I tell Zara what the receptionist said as we make our way to the girl's room. "Well, I refuse to believe she's a bad person," Zara says, her voice firm and defiant. I can't help but smile at her determination.
As we enter the room, Zara immediately goes over to the girl, who is sitting up in bed. She looks much better than she did yesterday. Zara kneels beside her and gently asks, "How are you feeling?"
The girl nods weakly. "Better. Thank you… for saving me," she says softly. Her voice trembles slightly, and tears well up in her eyes. "I just hope you don't regret it."
"What do you mean?" Zara asks, concern evident in her voice. She sits down on the edge of the bed, leaning closer to the girl.
Zara's POV
The girl sighs, her hands trembling as she clutches the blanket tightly. Her tears begin to fall as she speaks. "My name is Jill. I was born in Russia, and so was my sister, Ashley. We had a happy life—at least for a while. But everything changed when my father gambled away all our money. He left us in terrible debt."
I exchange a glance with Damian, who seems just as horrified as I feel, as Jill continues. "When the loan sharks realized my father couldn't pay, they took me and my sister instead. They sold us to that man… the one you saw yesterday." Her voice cracks. "He treated us horribly. We were nothing but objects to him. Ashley and I couldn't take it anymore, so we planned to escape."
She pauses, tears streaming down her face. "We made it out of the building, but his men chased us. He caught my sister. Ashley told me to run, to not look back… so I did. But now… they're still looking for me, and I don't know how to find her." Her voice breaks entirely as she dissolves into sobs.
I can feel my heart ache for her. I kneel beside her, taking her trembling hands in mine. "Don't worry, Jill," I say softly but firmly. "I promise you—I will help you find your sister."
Her tear-streaked face lights up with a fragile hope. "You will?"
"You will?" Damian echoes, his tone both surprised and wary.
"I will," I say with unwavering resolve. "And I swear on my life, I will make them pay for the pain and suffering they've caused you and your sister."
Damian looks at me, a mixture of admiration and concern in his eyes. "Zara, you're taking on a lot. Are you sure about this?"
"I've never been more sure," I reply, standing up. "I can't let them get away with this."
Damian sighs but nods.
Jill's tears increase, and a faint smile breaks through her fear. "Thank you. Both of you."
As we leave the hospital, my mind is already racing with plans. Trouble is coming—I know it. But for Jill, I'll do whatever I must do, whatever it takes.
