Chapter 30: 30. Blackwater Ridge
James and Ash were driving down the highway in the Camaro, the steady sound of the engine mixing with the upbeat music of Bye Bye Bye by NSYNC playing loudly from the car speakers.
Both of them had started singing together, their voices loud and full of energy:
"You may hate me, but it ain't no lie, baby, bye, bye, bye!"
Ash slapped the dashboard to the rhythm of the song, while James tapped the steering wheel, his voice just as loud
:
"I'm doin' this tonight, you're probably gonna start a fight... I know this can't be right, hey baby, come on!"
They didn't sound great, but neither of them cared. Laughing in between, they sang the chorus together:
"Don't wanna be a fool for you, just another player in your game for two!"
When the song ended, both of them laughed, with Ash leaning back in his seat and shaking his head. "Man, we nailed that. NSYNC would be proud."
James laughed too, shifting gears as he drove. "Alright, I've got to admit—you've got good taste in music."
Ash nodded proudly. "Damn right I do. That's a timeless jam."
James smiled, glancing at the empty stretch of road ahead. "So, what do you think we're walking into out there in the forest? Any guesses?"
Ash thought for a second, drumming his fingers on the door. "If it's supernatural, maybe black dogs or skinwalkers. If it's just a normal case, maybe bears."
James raised an eyebrow and gave him a quick glance before looking back at the road. "I know what skinwalkers are, but what's a black dog?"
Ash leaned forward, his tone shifting to a more serious, almost spooky one. "Black dogs are ghostly hounds—bad omens. They show up at crossroads, graveyards, or out in the middle of nowhere. Big, scary beasts with glowing eyes and teeth sharp enough to tear through anything. Seeing one usually means someone's about to die."
James frowned, gripping the steering wheel a little tighter. "Sounds great. Let's hope it's just bears, then."
Ash smirked, glancing at him. "Definitely."
James glanced at Ash. "Call Dean and tell him we're about five miles away from the ridge," he said firmly, keeping his eyes on the road.
Ash nodded, pulling out his phone and dialing Dean's number. After a few rings, Dean picked up, sounding as sharp as ever. "What's up?"
"We're about five miles from the ridge," Ash told him, glancing at James to make sure he got it right. "You guys there yet?"
Dean's reply was short and to the point. "Not yet, but we're heading there. Get there quick—we're on our way too." Before Ash could respond, Dean hung up.
Ash shrugged and turned to James. "Well, you heard him. Step on it."
James grinned and pressed his foot down on the accelerator. The Camaro sped up, the engine roaring as they closed the distance to the ridge. The earlier fun mood from their singing was gone, replaced with focus as they got closer to their destination.
---
When they arrived, they saw two cars parked near the ridge. One of them was instantly recognizable—the black Impala James had heard so much about. People were climbing out of both vehicles. Dean Winchester stepped out of the Impala, his face serious, while his brother Sam, tall and broad-shouldered, followed him. From the other car, two men and a woman got out. One of the men carried a gun and looked ready for trouble, while the woman seemed tense but determined.
James parked the Camaro right behind the Impala and turned off the engine. As soon as he stepped out, a familiar voice greeted him.
"Son of a b*tch! I didn't know you were coming," Sam said with a wide smile. He walked over to James, and they greeted each other with a perfect dap, their handshake smooth and easy.
"You're lucky we did," James replied, grinning. He was glad to see Sam.
Dean's voice cut through their moment. "Well, if you two boyfriends could stop making googly eyes at each other, we might actually have time to find Haley's brother."
James ignored the comment, his grin widening as he looked at Dean. "And nice to meet you too, Dean."
Dean rolled his eyes but smirked a little. "Yeah, yeah. Let's just hope you brought your A-game."
Ash stepped out of the Camaro and gave Dean a confident grin. "Don't worry about us. We're always ready." He extended a hand, and Dean gave it a firm shake before nodding.
The woman from the other car walked over, her eyes studying James and Ash carefully. Sam noticed her hesitation and stepped in to introduce her and the rest. "James, Ash—this is Haley, her brother and the hired guide."
James gave them a small nod. "Nice to meet you. Don't worry—we're here to help."
Roy, the guide, had an annoyed look on his face as he spoke, his tone sharp and impatient. "Do you guys think we're going on some sunny camping trip? This isn't a picnic. If you're not serious, turn back now and stop wasting my time."
Without waiting for anyone to reply, he turned and started walking, calling Haley and her brother to follow him. It was clear he didn't care much for Sam, Dean, Ash, or James tagging along.
Ash raised an eyebrow and leaned closer to James as they followed. "What's with him? Did he fight with his wife before coming here?"
James just shrugged. "Or maybe he's always like this."
Dean, walking a few steps ahead, muttered, "He's just mad he's not in charge anymore. Don't let it get to you."
The group continued deeper into the forest. The further they went, the quieter it got. Sam was the first to notice, his face growing serious as he looked around. "No crickets," he said softly.
Dean stopped and listened for a moment. "Yeah, no birds either. A forest this big should be full of sounds."
Ash glanced around, his hand moving closer to the small knife on his belt. "It's like the whole place is holding its breath."
James frowned but stayed quiet. He was still getting used to this world, and though he had his Essence Sense active, he hadn't picked up anything yet. Even so, he couldn't shake the tension that hung in the air.
As they moved further, they started searching for trails or clues. James was walking close to the boys, keeping an eye on the ground like the others.
"Dean, stop!" James shouted suddenly, grabbing Dean's shoulder.
Dean froze and turned to look at him with a raised eyebrow. "What is it?"
James pointed at the ground just ahead of Dean's foot. "Bear trap. You almost stepped into it."
Everyone stopped and looked. Underneath a thin layer of leaves and twigs, a rusted bear trap lay hidden.
Roy leaned in to look at the trap and gave James a nod. "Not bad. Maybe you're not as clueless as you look."
They kept walking, the forest growing darker as the trees overhead blocked out more sunlight. The silence around them made the air feel heavy. After a while, they stumbled upon a few torn-up campsites. The tents were ripped apart, sleeping bags shredded, and supplies scattered everywhere. Blood was splattered on the ground and even on some of the trees.
Haley gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. "Tommy was here," she said softly, her voice shaking. Her brother tried to comfort her, but he looked just as scared.
Sam crouched by a ripped sleeping bag, his face grim as he whispered. "This doesn't look like an animal attack. It's too precise."
Dean scanned the area, his hand resting on the gun at his side. "Yeah. This is something else."
James walked around the site, his Essence Sense suddenly flaring. He froze, feeling something fast and faint moving at the edge of his range. His head snapped up, his eyes scanning the trees. "Did anyone else feel that?"
Ash noticed James stop and looked over at him. "Feel what?"
"Something's out there," James said quietly. "I felt it. It was fast."
Dean and Sam exchanged a look, their faces serious. "Where?" Dean asked, his voice low.
James shook his head. "I don't know. It was just there for a second. Then it was gone."
Before anyone could respond, a scream tore through the silence. It was distant, but it was clear someone was in pain.
