Supernatural: Reincarnated into the Hunt

Chapter 31: 31. Unusual

The group froze when a distant scream pierced through the silence of the forest. Haley's eyes widened, and she turned toward Roy, fear flickering across her face. Roy, however, seemed more annoyed than concerned. He glanced at James, his expression skeptical.

"What's with you and your weird vibes, kid?" Roy muttered before turning to Haley. "Stay here. I'll go check it out. Might be your brother or one of his friends."

Just as Roy was about to move toward the sound, Ash stepped forward, his tone firm. "No, wait. We should stick together. It's dangerous out here."

Roy snorted, glaring at Ash. "Listen, son, I've been hunting in these woods longer than you've been alive. I know what I'm doing." Without waiting for anyone's approval, he started marching toward the direction of the scream.

Before Roy could get too far, James moved faster than anyone expected, closing the gap in an instant. Without hesitation, he hit Roy with a precise blow to the back of his head, knocking him out cold. Roy dropped to the ground with a heavy thud.

Dean raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed despite the situation. "I gotta admit, that was smooth. But now what? We've got dead weight to carry around."

James stood over Roy's unconscious body, looking unbothered. "Better than letting him walk straight into his death."

Dean smirked faintly, but his reply was cut off when Sam stepped forward, his attention shifting to Ash. "Ash, what do you think it was? You stopped him for a reason, right?"

Everyone turned to Ash, including Haley and her younger brother. They still looked shaken, their eyes darting nervously between James and Roy. Dean crouched down by Roy, muttering something under his breath as he checked the unconscious man.

Ash exhaled slowly, his face serious. "It's a Wendigo."

Sam's brows furrowed. "You're sure about that?"

Ash nodded. "Think about it. Wendigos are fast. They hunt at night but can still move around in the dark like this. The torn-up campsite, the blood, the silence in the forest—it all fits their pattern. Plus, the scream? It's a classic Wendigo trick. They mimic human voices to lure people away from the group."

James listened carefully, his expression darkening as Ash explained. "So, it's trying to split us up," James muttered.

"Exactly," Ash confirmed. "That's why we need to stay together. If we split up, it'll pick us off one by one."

Dean straightened, brushing off his hands after making sure Roy wasn't seriously hurt. "Alright, then. If it's a Wendigo, we need to come up with a plan before it comes back. We've dealt with them before."

Sam glanced at Ash, nodding slightly. "Good call on stopping Roy. Now let's make sure we're ready for what's coming."

As the group gathered closer, the atmosphere grew heavier. James glanced down at Roy's unconscious form, his jaw tightening. "He might've gotten himself killed if he'd gone out there alone."

Dean gave a small chuckle, shaking his head. "Yeah, well, he's not exactly gonna thank you when he wakes up."

James shrugged. "Doesn't matter. Staying alive's more important."

Haley suddenly shouted, her voice filled with anger and frustration. "Are you serious right now?" she yelled, glaring at everyone. "You knocked Roy out? He was the only one trying to go after the scream! That could be my brother out there, hurt or worse, and you're all just standing here doing nothing!"

James stayed quiet, meeting her glare without flinching. Instead, he turned to look at Sam, who then looked at Dean. Dean sighed, clearly annoyed but trying to stay calm.

"Look, Haley," Dean said, his voice steady but firm, "I get that you're worried about your brother. But running off like Roy was about to do? That's the quickest way to get yourself killed. We're not just dealing with bears or coyotes out here."

Haley crossed her arms tightly, her eyes flashing with disbelief. "Bears? Coyotes? What are you even talking about? You knocked Roy out for trying to help! My brother is out there, and you're just standing around making excuses!"

Dean rubbed his face, muttering under his breath, before stepping closer to her. His voice softened a little, but there was urgency in his tone. "Listen to me. You don't know what's out here, but we do. This isn't about wild animals. It's something worse. A Wendigo. Have you heard of it?"

Haley scoffed, shaking her head. "A Wendigo? You can't be serious. That's just some stupid campfire story to scare kids. My brother doesn't have time for your fairy tales!"

Sam spoke up this time, his voice calm and steady. "It's not a story, Haley. Wendigos are real. They're fast, dangerous, and smart. That scream you heard? That's what they do. They mimic human voices to lure people away from safety. If Roy had gone off alone, he wouldn't have come back. That's why James stopped him."

Haley stared at Sam, her face full of doubt. "You expect me to believe that some monster is out there? What's next? Vampires? Werewolves?"

Dean let out a short, humorless laugh. "Actually, yeah, those are real too. But right now, we're dealing with a Wendigo. And trust me, it's way scarier than anything you've ever seen on TV."

Haley hesitated, her anger giving way to uncertainty. She looked at James, who stood quietly, his face serious. "And you're just okay with this?" she asked him. "With leaving my brother out there?"

James met her eyes and replied, his voice cold but honest. "No one said we're leaving him. We're making sure no one else gets killed while we figure this out."

Before Haley could say anything, James tensed suddenly. Something didn't feel right. A flicker of movement caught his eye, and in a split second, a dark blur shot past the group. It moved so fast that no one else reacted in time.

A loud scream tore through the forest—Ben's scream—as he was dragged away by the Wendigo. But this time, James was ready. His eyes glowed red with intense focus, and blood started dripping from one eye. A strange blue glow flickered in his gaze.

In an instant, James unleashed the blue flame toward the Wendigo. The creature let out a horrifying scream, its speed slowing as the flames hit it. The Wendigo dropped Ben to the ground and tried to flee, limping as the flame burned its leg.

Haley and Dean rushed to Ben, who was shaking but alive. Meanwhile, Sam caught James as he stumbled, his legs wobbly and unsteady. James's breathing was heavy, and his thoughts were spinning.

"Damn," James muttered under his breath. "What the hell just happened?"

He opened his system panel, hoping for answers. His essence energy had dropped to half, and his Essence Flame was close to leveling up to Level 2. But James still didn't understand how he'd done it. The only clues were the blood in his eye as if he had used the Mangekyo Sharingan or something and the overwhelming exhaustion.

If he'd been alone, fighting some enemy, James knew he might've already been killed.

Sam and Ash looked at him, their expressions a mix of confusion and concern.

"What's going on with you?" Sam asked, worried. "You're not okay."

James shook his head, still catching his breath. He didn't have an answer—not yet.
