Chapter 28: Chapter 28
Chinatown, also known as Hua Bu or the Chinese district, is an area where Chinese people settle in cities of other countries. The formation of Chinatowns came about because early Chinese immigrants, who became a minority in their new countries, gathered together in specific areas for mutual support in the face of a foreign environment. Therefore, most Chinatowns are a historical testament to the Chinese diaspora.
Walking through Chinatown, it is easy to become disoriented, unsure of where you are. Signs in Chinese characters are everywhere, there are various Chinese restaurants, and shops selling traditional Chinese handicrafts are scattered around. In the supermarkets, you can find everything from Chinese-made tables and chairs to small items like needles and thread.
For Asians shopping or dining here, one can experience the "human touch" of China. When buying leek or dried tofu, the shopkeeper often adds a little extra; if you happen to share the same "yellow face" and are a wandering child from the same country, the shopkeeper might even give you a large bowl of "soup of the day" on the house.
For Chinese descendants, Chinatown is a place of nostalgia for their hometown and homeland. For foreigners, Chinatown is "Little China," where they get their first taste of Chinese culture.
"Slurp! Slurp!"
Inside a Chinese restaurant, Vanessa awkwardly scooped noodles from her bowl with chopsticks, eating them with great enjoyment, the happy expression on her face not once faltering since she started eating.
"Sigh!"
Having finished his bowl of noodles early, Alex sighed helplessly. Whether American or Canadian, the Chinese chopsticks seem to be a struggle for most. Watching Vanessa's clumsy movements, Alex reached out and signaled to a Chinese waiter in the restaurant to bring a fork, handing it to Vanessa.
"If you're not used to chopsticks, you can use this."
Vanessa blinked in surprise, then extended her hand to take the fork, putting the chopsticks aside. No doubt, her speed in eating was greatly improved this time.
After saying goodbye to Zhang Yafan, Alex had planned to hurry back to his house with Vanessa. But after walking a few steps, he heard a growl from Vanessa's stomach.
It was only then that he remembered that neither he nor Vanessa had had lunch, and he wasn't sure if the food at his place would be enough for both of them.
He slapped his forehead, cursing himself for not thinking ahead. Alex then took Vanessa to the nearest Chinese restaurant, where they each ordered a bowl of noodles.
With the fork in hand, Vanessa ate significantly faster, devouring her noodles hungrily. After a few moments, she put the fork down and patted her stomach, a very contented expression on her face. Alex watched her with amazement. After all, Vanessa's bowl of noodles was the same size as his!
"Full?"
"Mm!"
"Alright, let's go."
Once Vanessa nodded in response, Alex stood up, paid the bill, and they both walked out of the restaurant, continuing toward his house.
Soon, they arrived at the front of a grand mansion.
The house was a beautiful German-style building, occupying roughly two-thirds of the lot—about 1,000 square meters. In front of the house, there was a neatly manicured, beautiful lawn, and a sizeable swimming pool.
If anyone familiar with the local real estate market were here, they would immediately recognize the value of this mansion and label Alex as a "hidden rich man!"
Due to the nearby airport, the construction height in Flushing was restricted, so they couldn't build skyscrapers like in Manhattan's commercial districts. Instead, the area had row houses built from sturdy brick. With the rapid rise in land prices in Queens in recent years, a $300,000 house would get you a solid, but unimpressive row house.
In other words, Alex's mansion would cost at least $3 million to buy, which would translate to tens of millions of RMB!
Ignoring the security systems, Alex reached out to push the gate open. He joked to himself that those two had already snuck into his home in plain sight. If the security systems still worked, that would be a miracle!
"…"
As expected, the security system on the gate didn't make a sound.
Seeing this, Alex sighed, the brief hope disappearing completely from his mind. He could already imagine what was happening inside his house!
"Let's go in. This is my home, and from now on, it will be yours too!" With those words, Alex led Vanessa toward the house.
"My home?" Vanessa murmured softly, her eyes slowly reddening.
"It's the emotional trigger, isn't it? You're thinking of your parents who passed away."
Out of the corner of his eye, Alex noticed Vanessa's expression, and his heart softened. He reached out and placed a hand on her small head. "From now on, we're family. If you need anything, don't hesitate to tell me. No need to be polite!"
"Mm!"
Tears began to well up at the corners of Vanessa's eyes as she looked directly into Alex's eyes and nodded firmly.
"Good girl!"
Praising her softly, Alex wiped away the tears from her cheek and walked toward the house.
When they reached the door, Alex didn't immediately open it but pulled Vanessa behind him. "Listen, stay behind me for now. Don't come out, alright?"
Seeing the seriousness on Alex's face, Vanessa nodded and, with a bit of fear, shrank behind him, holding onto the back of his clothes with her little hands.
"That's the way." Alex nodded, then opened the door.
"Whoosh!" "Whoosh!"
As the door swung open, sharp sounds of air being cut reached their ears, and two light objects flew swiftly, shooting straight toward Alex, who was standing at the doorway!
"Always pulling this trick. You're really no fun!"
With a sigh, Alex didn't hesitate. He raised his hand and flicked his fingers. "Bang! Bang!" The incoming objects were struck mid-air and embedded into the wall to his right.
"Crash~~"
The residual impact caused the wall to crack, and debris flew. Upon closer inspection, the objects lodged in the wall were two sharp **!
"When did ** become a throwing weapon??!" Alex complained.
** is a favorite of close combat enthusiasts. Its appearance is spectacular, and yet deadly, aiming for a one-hit kill. The only person Alex knows who enjoys playing with ** and has a lot of them is none other than the infamous "Violent Lolita" assassin—Deadpool!
Therefore, the identity of the person attacking Alex was easy to guess.
"Whoosh!"
Before Alex could shout to reveal the identity of the attacker, a small figure suddenly darted forward, grabbing Alex's right hand with both hands, her body leaning forward—clearly attempting a shoulder throw!
"Enough already!"
With that, Alex forcefully broke free from her grip. Before she could react, he grabbed her shoulder and effortlessly tossed her backward.
Normally, Alex would play along with the opponent, but today, with Vanessa behind him and clutching his clothes, if he allowed the opponent to perform the throw, Vanessa would certainly get hurt. That was not something Alex was willing to let happen.
"Whoosh!"
As soon as he threw the small figure, a sharp wind rushed toward Alex's throat, and a blade of light streaked toward him, its momentum relentless!
Facing this fierce attack, Alex remained still, bitterly smiling as he looked at the approaching blade. "Frank, enough. There's a little one behind me!"
Strangely, the moment Alex spoke, the advancing blade halted in mid-air, barely an inch away from his throat, before being retracted and sheathed.
"Alright, alright, next time," came a voice.
"Tch, so boring!"
A deep, heavy voice and a light, agile one spoke almost simultaneously. Two figures, one tall and one short, slowly stepped out from the shadows, entering Alex and Vanessa's line of sight.
Before their faces could fully register, Alex chuckled and spoke, "Long time no see, Frank, Deadpool…"
