Chapter 27: Chapter 27
It was noon, and the warm sunlight shone down directly.
The bus drove slowly down the streets of New York, weaving through the busy lanes. The road was filled with cars, and crowds of people moved about. The traffic lights at the intersections would occasionally emit the sound of "ding ding ding."
The pace of life here was very fast. People walked faster than in other places, and there were even quite a few people running through the streets.
As the bus continued on its journey, the steel jungle of the city began to recede, and the scenery on either side gradually replaced the cold and harsh urban landscape, making it feel as though warmth was returning to the world.
This change signaled their entry into Queens.
"Wow~ Wow~~ Wow~~!"
Since entering Queens, Vanessa's expressions of surprise had never stopped. Other passengers on the bus heard her exclamations, but instead of scolding her, they gave her understanding smiles.
This was no surprise. Outsiders visiting Queens for the first time often reacted this way. Even the long-time residents of the area, when they saw the scenery outside, couldn't help but feel a sense of awe.
The scenery in Queens was truly beautiful and captivating!
Of all the five boroughs of New York City, Queens was the most beautiful, much like a queen—noble and beautiful. Particularly the suburbs of Queens, which could be described as a fairyland, a paradise that many people dream of. Every holiday or weekend, countless people drive to the suburbs just to enjoy the beautiful views there.
Queens was not only the largest administrative district in New York City but also the most ethnically diverse county in the United States. Apart from the roughly 50% white population, the proportions of Asian, Latin American, and African American populations were all higher than the national average. Among the Asian population, those of Indian, Chinese, and Korean descent were the largest groups. The main commercial areas within the district included Flushing and Elmhurst for Asians, and Jamaica for Latinos.
The flourishing multicultural trade also gave Queens a diverse cultural character. It could be said that entering Queens felt like traveling around the world.
With neighborhoods of various minority ethnic groups, one could experience different cultures firsthand. In Astoria, Greek restaurants could rival top-tier establishments; on the streets of Jackson Heights, colorful Indian saris were everywhere; and the Spanish spoken on the streets made one feel as though they had stepped into Spain. In Flushing, one could easily find a wide variety of Asian delicacies, and in Chinatown, the deep cultural heritage of 5,000 years of China awaited.
Moreover, Queens was also known for attracting emerging artists and holding major sporting events. Whether you were an artist or a sports enthusiast, you could find something to enjoy here.
"Synonymous with 'the highest quality and taste,'" Queens truly deserved the title. Its reverence and grandeur, originating in the 19th century, had made it the business, residential, cultural, shopping, and tourist hub of New York City. Additionally, the number of superheroes living here was the second-highest in all of New York!
"..."
Vanessa's excited exclamations didn't faze Alex. After all, when he first visited here, his reaction had been almost as amazed as hers!
Outside the bus window, countless men in suits and women in fashionable attire were entering and leaving the high-rise buildings, painting a picture of modern, high-fashion American life.
Once in Queens, the bus noticeably slowed down, giving the passengers ample time to appreciate the diversity along the streets.
Soon, the bus arrived at its final destination, Flushing. Alex took Vanessa's small hand, and together with a dozen or so other passengers, they got off the bus and stood on the sidewalk on the left side of the street.
Looking up, the three Chinese characters for "唐人街" (Chinatown) immediately caught their eyes.
Indeed, Alex and Vanessa were now in Flushing's most famous Chinatown, which was also the best and most authentic Chinatown in all of New York City, resembling China's current state!
"This is the place. Let's go!"
Saying this, Alex lifted a long wooden box with his left hand. He had bought it at the harbor, and it contained several knives made of Edman alloy that he had obtained from the island. With his right hand, he held Vanessa's hand, preventing her from getting lost as she curiously looked around. He began walking into Chinatown.
"Alex! Long time no see, did you just get back from your trip?"
Along the way, many Chinese shopkeepers warmly greeted Alex. As a foreigner who understood Chinese culture well, they were all very friendly towards him.
"Yeah, I just got back from Canada!"
Alex smiled and responded to their greetings one by one, walking slowly towards his home, his smile completely at odds with the image of the ruthless man who had once slaughtered soldiers on the island.
"Hey, Alex, did you... did you find your long-lost half-sister?"
While they were walking, a burly young man with black hair came out of a shop and greeted Alex enthusiastically. However, when he saw Vanessa behind Alex, he froze for a moment, then put on an expression of "I already know the truth," making Alex feel both amused and exasperated.
"I don't even have a father in this world. Where would I have a half-sister?!!"
Grumbling in his heart, Alex kept his expression neutral and said, "Zhang Yafan, your imagination is getting wilder!"
"Hahahahaha!!"
The man named Zhang Yafan threw his head back and laughed, waving his hand. "Sorry, sorry, I was just joking. Don't mind me. By the way, who's she?"
As he spoke, Zhang Yafan pointed at Vanessa, who was hiding behind Alex, looking at him with curiosity. "Don't tell me you found her while traveling? Otherwise, I might have to call the police!"
"Tch, do you think calling the police can scare me?"
Alex scoffed disdainfully, pulling Vanessa out from behind him to introduce her to the man. "This is my troublesome friend, Zhang Yafan, a Chinese guy. And this is Vanessa, whom I met during my trip. For some inconvenient reasons, her guardian asked me to temporarily look after her."
Alex's explanation of Vanessa's identity was half true and half false. Charles had mentioned that he would have his partner, a federal agent, help Vanessa obtain her identity documents. Once those documents arrived, Vanessa's legal guardian would be Alex. Until then, this was the official story they would present to others.
"Oh, I see!"
Zhang Yafan scratched his head and then smiled warmly. He turned to Vanessa and said, "I'm the owner of this restaurant. If you ever want Chinese food, just come find me!"
Vanessa didn't respond, shrinking back a bit in fear. After seeing the encouraging look in Alex's eyes, she shyly nodded, her voice so soft that others couldn't hear her reply.
"Hmm!"
"She's a shy little one, huh?"
Zhang Yafan chuckled kindly, then turned to Alex. "Come over to my place tonight for a drink. We'll celebrate your return."
"Sure!"
Alex agreed readily. Although he appeared like a typical Westerner on the outside, his soul was that of a guy who had lived in China for twenty years, a homebody. Only in Chinatown would he show his true self.
"Ah, by the way, you should go home and check on things. I heard from the building manager that two rowdy guys are at your place, causing a ruckus and almost tearing down your mansion!"
As if recalling something, Zhang Yafan gave Alex a look full of schadenfreude.
"Rowdy guys?"
Alex's heart skipped a beat. He had a rough idea of who they might be, and a pang of discomfort hit him. These two troublemakers were probably no less of a nuisance than him. There was no way they had good intentions for visiting his place!
"I hope they haven't caused too much trouble!"
With that 0.001% hope, Alex quickly bid farewell to Zhang Yafan and hurriedly led Vanessa towards his home…
