Chapter 17: The jungle stalkers
The jungle was alive with the sounds of the night, the rustling of leaves, and the distant calls of nocturnal creatures. The group moved cautiously, every step a calculated effort to avoid making noise. Emily walked near the middle of the group, her eyes scanning the surrounding foliage for any signs of danger. Alex was still recovering back at camp, leaving the rest of them to push forward in search of the mysterious seed they hoped could heal him completely.
As they advanced, Emily's mind wandered back to the temple. The mural they had discovered depicted a seed with an ethereal glow, the same seed that supposedly had the power to heal wounds and even restore life. The others had focused on the seed's potential to heal Alex, but Emily's thoughts had been caught on a different detail.
Before they had even found the temple, Ryan had mentioned that they needed the Naga's stone to open the gate. But how had he known that? The map had shown them the way, but it didn't reveal that specific detail until they were deep within the temple's inner sanctum. The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she became.
"Emily, you alright?" Kenji's voice cut through her thoughts, bringing her back to the present. She nodded, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling.
"I'm fine. Just thinking about the seed," she replied, forcing a small smile.
Ahead of them, the jungle seemed to grow darker, the shadows deeper and more foreboding. mia, who was scouting ahead with Tom, suddenly held up a hand, signaling the group to stop. The air grew tense as everyone instinctively reached for their weapons.
"There's something out there," mia whispered, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the darkness.
Before anyone could respond, a low growl echoed from the trees, followed by the unmistakable sound of movement—swift, deliberate, and closing in fast. The group barely had time to react before a pair of glowing amber eyes appeared in the shadows, followed by another, and then another.
"Jungle Stalkers," Ryan hissed, his hand tightening around his weapon. The sleek, predatory cats began to circle the group, their dark, mottled fur blending seamlessly with the jungle's shadows.
"Stay close and don't lose sight of each other!" Kenji ordered, his voice calm but firm. He and Mark moved to the front, ready to face the threat head-on.
The first Stalker leaped out of the darkness, aiming straight for Lena. She barely managed to dodge the creature's claws, stumbling back as Tom pulled her to safety. mia fired her gun, the shot echoing through the jungle as the bullet struck one of the Stalkers, but the creature merely flinched, its tough hide absorbing most of the impact.
"These things are fast," Tom muttered, firing at another Stalker that was trying to flank them.
The battle quickly descended into chaos. The Stalkers were relentless, darting in and out of the shadows, their glowing eyes the only warning before they struck. The group fought back as best they could, but the creatures were almost too fast to track. Emily found herself separated from the others, a Stalker's eyes locked onto her. Just as it pounced, she fired her gun, the bullet catching the creature mid-air and sending it crashing to the ground.
Breathing heavily, Emily looked around, trying to find the others. That's when she noticed something odd—a faint glow in the underbrush to her left. Curious, she cautiously approached, keeping her weapon ready in case another Stalker was nearby.
Hidden beneath a tangle of vines was a small, carved stone, the same ethereal glow that had been depicted in the mural shining softly from its surface. It was a clue, she realized, one that might lead them to the seed. But why hadn't anyone else noticed it?
Before she could think further, another Stalker lunged at her from behind. She spun around just in time, firing off a shot that grazed the creature's side. It roared in pain, retreating into the shadows as the rest of the group finally began to gain the upper hand. The remaining Stalkers, realizing they were outmatched, melted back into the jungle, their glowing eyes disappearing into the night.
The group regrouped, breathing heavily and nursing a few minor injuries. Emily's heart was still pounding from the fight, but her mind was racing with the implications of what she had found.
"Is everyone okay?" Kenji asked, his voice steady despite the adrenaline still coursing through him.
"We're fine," Lena replied, though she was clearly shaken. "But those things… they're vicious."
"They're gone now," Ryan said, his tone unusually calm. He looked at each of them, as if assessing their condition.
As the group started to move back toward camp, Emily fell in step beside Ryan. Her thoughts from earlier returned with a vengeance, especially now that she had found the glowing stone. Ryan had known too much before they had even entered the temple. She had to find out what he knew.
But for now, she stayed silent, keeping the discovery of the stone to herself. The group needed to rest, and they couldn't afford any more surprises tonight. As they walked, she couldn't shake the feeling that whatever was going on with Ryan, it was only the beginning.
Back at camp, they settled in, everyone on edge after the encounter. As they sat around the fire, discussing the next steps to find the seed, Emily couldn't stop thinking about the mural, the stone, and Ryan's strange behavior. Something was definitely wrong, and she was determined to find out what it was.
But that would have to wait until morning. For now, they needed to prepare for whatever dangers lay ahead—and she had a feeling they were only just beginning to unravel the mysteries of this island.
