Chapter 18: The seed of life
The sun dipped low on the horizon as the group gathered around the makeshift camp they had built near the edge of the jungle. Alex lay motionless on a bed of soft leaves and fabric, his breathing shallow but steady. His wound had been wrapped tightly, and though the group had done their best to care for him, his condition was still critical.
Emily knelt beside Alex, carefully inspecting his bandages. Her mind raced with the events of the past few days—their battle with the Naga, the temple's collapse, and the strange mural depicting the seed. She glanced around, ensuring the others were distracted before she quietly slipped a small, folded note into Alex's bandages, hiding it beneath the layers of cloth.
She had scribbled the note hastily, hoping it would be a lifeline for Alex if something went wrong. As she finished tucking it away, Emily's thoughts returned to the seed they had seen in the mural. Could it really save him?
The group had discussed the mural earlier, and now, it was their only hope. They had to find the seed.
"We can't wait any longer," Emily said, her voice firm. "We need to find that seed now."
The others nodded in agreement. Mark, Kenji, and Rebecca began gathering supplies for the journey, while mia, Tom, Lena, and Ryan prepared themselves for what lay ahead.
As they ventured back into the jungle, the atmosphere was tense. The knowledge that the seed could be their last chance to save Alex weighed heavily on all of them. Emily led the way, guided by the memory of the mural and a faint instinct that something more was at play here.
After hours of trekking through dense foliage, they reached a small clearing. At its center, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, was a tree unlike any they had ever seen. Its bark shimmered with a soft glow, and nestled among its roots was a small, radiant seed, pulsating with life.
"This must be it," Lena whispered, her eyes wide with awe.
Ryan felt a strange pull toward the seed, the dryad's voice echoing in his mind. "Take it. This is what we've been searching for." He shook off the thought, not wanting to draw attention to himself just yet.
Emily cautiously approached the seed, kneeling beside it. "Let's hope this works," she said as she gently plucked the seed from the ground. It felt warm in her hand, as if it was alive.
They hurried back to the camp, not wanting to waste any more time. When they arrived, Emily carefully fed the seed to Alex. For a moment, nothing happened. The group watched in tense silence, their hopes hanging by a thread.
Then, slowly, Alex's breathing began to deepen. Color returned to his pale cheeks, and the wound on his side started to close, the skin knitting together as if by magic. Within minutes, Alex's condition had drastically improved, though he remained unconscious.
The group sighed in relief, their spirits lifted by the sight of Alex's recovery. But before they could fully relax, Ryan's voice cut through the air.
"It's done," he said, a strange tone in his voice.
Before anyone could react, several vines shot out from the jungle, wrapping around the group members, except for Alex. mia, Mark, Kenji, and the others struggled, but the vines were too strong, pulling them down to the ground. Ryan stood off to the side, a conflicted look on his face as the dryad's influence took hold.
"Ryan, what are you doing?" mia shouted, her voice filled with confusion and betrayal.
"I'm sorry," Ryan muttered, his gaze distant. "I have to do this. It's the only way."
Emily struggled against the vines, her mind racing. She had suspected something was off with Ryan, but this… this was beyond what she had imagined. Her thoughts briefly flickered to the note she had left for Alex, hoping he would find it when he woke up.
