Chapter 19: Chapter 19 : Clash of Light and Shadow
The shadow wraith moved like liquid darkness, its glowing claws slicing through the air as it lunged toward Kael. The air around it grew colder, and Kael's breath came out in frosty puffs.
"Stay back!" Ember growled, leaping between Kael and the wraith. Her flames flared to life, casting a brilliant orange glow across the clearing.
The wraith recoiled slightly but didn't stop. It let out a low, guttural hiss as it lashed out with one claw, the sickly green light leaving a trail in the air. Ember darted to the side, narrowly avoiding the strike, and countered with a burst of fire.
The flames struck the wraith, but instead of burning, they seemed to pass through it, barely disturbing its shadowy form.
"It's not fully physical!" Ember shouted, her fiery eyes narrowing. "We'll need more than brute force to take it down."
Kael's heart raced as he fumbled for an answer. The golden thread pulsed wildly in his chest, its energy resonating with the crystal in his satchel. He could feel their connection growing stronger, but he didn't know how to use it.
"Kael, focus!" Umbra barked, his small body bristling with tension. "The thread—it's calling to you. You need to use it!"
Kael clenched his fists, forcing himself to breathe. The thread's energy surged through him, warm and steady despite the chaos around him. He reached for the satchel, pulling the golden crystal into his hands.
As soon as his fingers touched the crystal, its light flared brightly, pushing back the shadows that surrounded the wraith. The creature hissed, its hooded head snapping toward Kael.
"It doesn't like that," Ember said, her voice tinged with urgency.
Kael stepped forward, the crystal's energy surging through him. "Then let's give it something to really hate."
The wraith lunged toward him, its claws raised to strike. Kael raised the crystal instinctively, and a wave of golden light erupted from its surface, slamming into the wraith and sending it staggering back.
The creature let out an unearthly shriek, its shadowy form flickering like a flame caught in the wind.
"It's working!" Umbra shouted, his glowing blue eyes blazing with determination.
Kael tightened his grip on the crystal, the golden thread pulsing in harmony with its light. The energy coursing through him was overwhelming, but he forced himself to focus.
"Ember, Umbra—now!" he shouted.
Ember darted forward, her flames blazing as she struck at the wraith's side. At the same time, Umbra released a surge of shadowy tendrils that wrapped around the creature's legs, holding it in place.
The wraith thrashed wildly, its claws slashing at the tendrils and flames, but Kael didn't give it a chance to recover. He stepped closer, the crystal's light growing brighter with each step.
"Leave us alone!" Kael shouted, his voice steady and filled with resolve.
The crystal flared, and another wave of golden energy erupted from its surface, slamming into the wraith. The creature shrieked again, its form flickering violently as the light tore through it.
For a moment, Kael thought it was over. The wraith's shadowy form seemed to disintegrate, its edges dissolving into wisps of darkness. But then it reared back, its claws glowing brighter as it lunged toward him with terrifying speed.
"Kael!" Ember cried, her flames blazing as she leapt toward the wraith.
Time seemed to slow as Kael raised the crystal one last time, pouring every ounce of his focus into the golden thread. The warmth in his chest surged, and the crystal's light flared brighter than ever, enveloping the entire clearing in a blinding golden glow.
The wraith let out one final, ear-splitting shriek before its form shattered into fragments of shadow, which dissipated into the air like smoke.
The clearing fell silent, the golden light fading until only the faint glow of the crystal remained. Kael stood frozen, his chest heaving as he clutched the crystal tightly.
"Kael!" Ember called, rushing to his side. Her fiery eyes scanned him for injuries. "Are you okay?"
Kael nodded shakily, his legs threatening to give out beneath him. "I… I think so."
Umbra padded over, his small body trembling with exhaustion. "You did it," he said softly, his glowing blue eyes filled with relief.
Kael sank to the ground, the crystal still warm in his hands. "What was that thing?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"A shadow wraith," Ember said, her tone grim. "Beings like that are drawn to powerful artifacts. The crystal must have attracted it."
Kael's chest tightened. "Does that mean more of them will come?"
"It's possible," Ember admitted. "But for now, it's gone. You destroyed it."
Kael nodded, though the weight of the crystal in his hands felt heavier than ever. The golden thread pulsed faintly, its energy steady but subdued, as though it were resting after the battle.
"We need to move," Umbra said quietly. "The wraith was bad enough, but if Venric's men are still looking for us…"
Kael forced himself to stand, his muscles aching. "You're right. We can't stay here."
Ember nodded, her flames dimming as she fell into step beside him. "Let's head deeper into the forest. We'll find a place to regroup."
As they made their way out of the clearing, Kael couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air. The shadow wraith was gone, but its presence had left a mark—a reminder of the dangers that came with the crystal's power.
He tightened his grip on the artifact, the golden thread pulsing faintly in his chest. Whatever lay ahead, he knew they couldn't afford to let their guard down.
The road was only going to get harder.
