The Arcane Beast Tamer

Chapter 20: Chapter 20 : Burden of the Power

The forest was eerily quiet as Kael and his companions moved deeper into its shadowy expanse. The golden crystal in Kael's satchel pulsed faintly, its warm energy a small comfort in the oppressive stillness that surrounded them.

Kael's body ached from the battle with the shadow wraith, and his mind buzzed with unanswered questions. The golden thread in his chest pulsed softly, almost like a heartbeat, but its usual warmth was muted, as though it, too, were recovering.

"We should stop for a while," Umbra said, his small voice breaking the silence. His glowing blue eyes darted nervously around the trees. "We all need to rest—and so does the crystal."

Kael nodded reluctantly, his gaze scanning the forest for a suitable spot. They found a small clearing bordered by thick bushes, its floor covered in soft moss. Kael sank to the ground, leaning back against a tree as he let out a shaky breath.

Ember sat nearby, her fiery eyes fixed on the golden crystal. Her flames were dimmed, flickering faintly in the dim light of the forest. "That wraith was no coincidence," she said, her tone sharp. "It was drawn to the crystal. The more we use its power, the more attention we'll attract."

Kael's chest tightened. "What choice did we have? If I hadn't used the crystal, the wraith would've killed us."

Ember's gaze softened slightly, but her expression remained tense. "I know. But this is only the beginning. Artifacts like that don't just attract shadow wraiths—they draw all kinds of predators, both beast and human."

Umbra padded closer, his shadowy form blending with the dim light. "We need to find the other artifacts quickly. The longer we hold onto just one, the more vulnerable we are."

Kael nodded, though the weight of the crystal in his satchel seemed to grow heavier with every word. "Orlin said the second artifact is in the ruins of a northern temple. That's where we'll go next."

Ember frowned. "The northern lands are dangerous. If the crystal's power has already drawn attention here, imagine what it'll do in a place steeped in ancient magic."

Kael's fists tightened. "Then we'll have to be ready."

A heavy silence fell over the group, broken only by the faint rustling of leaves in the wind. Kael's thoughts were a whirlwind of doubt, fear, and determination.

What if we can't do this? he thought. What if the cost of this power is too great?

The golden thread pulsed faintly in his chest, its warmth cutting through the haze of his thoughts. Kael let out a slow breath, focusing on its steady rhythm.

"I'm not giving up," he said, his voice quiet but firm. "We've come too far to turn back now."

Ember's fiery eyes met his, and after a moment, she nodded. "Good. Because turning back isn't an option."

Night fell over the forest, wrapping the clearing in darkness. The group had decided to take turns keeping watch, wary of any lingering threats. Ember sat near the edge of the clearing, her flames casting faint light over the trees.

Kael leaned against the tree, staring at the crystal as it pulsed faintly in his hands. Its golden glow reflected in his eyes, and he couldn't shake the feeling that it was trying to tell him something.

"You look like you're about to fall into that thing," Lira's voice cut through the stillness.

Kael jumped, his heart skipping a beat. He turned to see the rogue leaning casually against a tree at the edge of the clearing, her smirk as infuriating as ever.

"Lira!" Kael exclaimed, relief flooding through him. "You're alive!"

"Of course I am," Lira said, stepping into the light. "You didn't think I'd let a few guards take me down, did you?"

Umbra stirred from where he had been resting, his glowing eyes widening. "You made it out!"

Lira shrugged, twirling one of her daggers. "Wasn't easy, but I've had worse. I doubled back to throw them off your trail, then followed you into the forest."

Ember raised an eyebrow. "And you didn't think to announce yourself sooner?"

"Where's the fun in that?" Lira said with a grin.

Kael shook his head, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "We're glad you're okay."

Lira's smirk softened, and she gave him a nod. "Glad you didn't get yourselves killed while I was gone. So, what's the plan now?"

Kael's smile faded as he tucked the crystal back into his satchel. "We're heading north, to the ruins of the temple where the second artifact is hidden."

Lira raised an eyebrow. "The north, huh? You sure know how to pick the most dangerous destinations."

"We don't have a choice," Kael said firmly. "If we don't find the other artifacts, we'll never be able to break Umbra's curse—or stop whoever's behind all of this."

Lira studied him for a moment, then nodded. "Alright. Count me in."

Ember narrowed her eyes. "You don't have to come with us. This is going to get worse before it gets better."

Lira grinned. "Worse is where I thrive. Besides, someone has to make sure Kael doesn't trip over his own feet."

Kael rolled his eyes but couldn't help feeling a flicker of gratitude. With Lira back, their chances felt just a little brighter.

As dawn broke over the forest, the group packed up their supplies and set off toward the north. The golden thread pulsed faintly in Kael's chest, guiding him forward as they navigated the dense woods.

But the further they went, the more Kael felt the weight of the crystal's power pressing down on him. The encounter with the shadow wraith had shaken him, and he couldn't ignore the sense of foreboding that lingered in the air.

"We'll make it," Umbra said softly, padding beside him. "Together."

Kael glanced down at the cub, his chest tightening. "I hope you're right."

The road ahead was long and uncertain, but Kael knew one thing for sure—they couldn't stop now.
