Chapter 14_ Recognised
It was a rainy morning.
Well, this wasn’t the greatest weather, but it didn’t matter. It wasn’t like there was anything I could do about it.
“Riku-kun, did you finish the English homework? What the hell was that thing that we needed to write for part two? It didn’t make any sense.”
“I finished it last night.”
“Really?! Please show me~. I had no idea how to do it.”
I hadn’t even gotten to my seat before I was accosted by Haruto-kun.
I placed my bag down and grabbed the English work. I didn’t think there was anything particular of note in any of it. Haruto-kun was supposed to be one of the smarter students, but I guess he’s not the most consistent.
Taking it out, I passed it to him.
“What? Are you sure that’s what we’re meant to do?”
In terms of being sure, I was certain. Still, I couldn’t really be bothered trying to explain it to him thoroughly.
“I think so.”
He examined it as I took a book out of my bag. My usual morning routine was to read until the beginning of period one. However, I felt as if this wasn’t going to be possible today. I had a new message from Yoshikawa-sensei, but I guess that’d have to wait. Like a vicious aura gathering around me, I noticed that someone was walking towards me.
She had an uncomfortably sharp glare.
“Good morning, Mizutaka-kun.”
Her words suggested nothing, but her facial expression said more than anyone could ever express in words.
Haruto-kun was taken aback in surprise when she talked to me. However, he definitely didn’t understand her true intention.
“What is it, Hamasaki-san?”
“Do you mind if we have a short chat in private?”
Ah… what a pain.
I had no idea what she wanted, but whatever it was, it wasn’t going to be good.
“You know, I’m a bit busy right now. Can you wait a—”
I felt a pain in my ear.
“Mizutaka-kun, you haven’t been doing any of the tasks I’ve been setting you. I’ll let that slide if you come with me right now.”
Ah. I did forget to do my cleaning duty—although it was definitely pushed upon me with malicious intent.
With no other choice, I got up out of my seat.
Thankfully, Haruto-kun was busy copying down my homework, so he didn’t make any suggestive comments as I followed Hamasaki-san out of the classroom.
“So, Hamasaki-san, what’s this important thing you needed to talk to me about…”
“Wait a moment. We’re going to a more quiet place.”
“A-ah. Alright then.”
We continued to walk through the hall until finally, we reached a secluded area by the top of the stairs. The only notable object in the area was the overpriced vending machine that no one ever used.
Hamasaki-san’s expression changed. It went from her usual glare to something that might’ve been even scarier.
…
“Why were you on Sweeping Love! More importantly, why were you the first participant!?”
Well, this was a little unexpected.
“Erm, they asked me to go, so I went on it.”
“You’re the biggest liar I’ve ever witnessed. Just seeing you on there ruined my experienced. I couldn’t believe that none of the girls realised you were just a good-for-nothing slob.”
This was a little annoying.
“Did you call me all the way out here to tell me that?”
“No. This morning, I saw Miyazaki Kaede’s name on your phone. Tell me, what is that all about…?”
Ah. She probably saw it when I pressed Yoshikawa-sensei’s message.
Well, it shouldn’t be hard to just talk my way out of this.
“It was just something that all the participants had to do.”
“What was something that all the participants had to do…? Add her phone number? I don’t think so.”
Well, she was a little more observant than I gave her credit for.
I either sound like a creepy stalker or tell her the truth. Neither of them was a particularly good option, but I didn’t want to do anything that’d possibly spread my relationship with her at the moment. So I guess I’d just choose the former.
“Ah. That’s not for you to see. I just named one of my contacts her name. I just thought it’d be funny.”
There wasn’t really a great way to insinuate it, though.
She took a moment to think.
“You may be a good-for-nothing, but I don’t think you’d go as far as to pretend to have a conversation with a celebrity. If that’s the case…”
Ah, she saw through me.
What a pain.
“Um, period one’s starting soon. I should head back—”
“Wait. You’re not leaving until you tell me what’s going on.”
“Nothing’s going on.”
“I know that’s not true. Why would you just have her number in your phone? Especially after not asking her out!”
“It’s a long story.”
“You’re going to tell me. I couldn’t imagine Kaede-chan having any affection for a worthless person like you, but I don’t understand why she’d give you her number. Did you get on your knees and beg for it after the show?”
She was actually the one who messaged me.
Whatever the case, this was starting to get somewhat problematic. I guess I’d have to clear it up one way or another.
“Why are you so interested in it, Hamasaki-san?”
She fidgeted around a little.
I noticed that her face was slightly blushed.
Don’t tell me…
“Don’t tell anyone, but I’m actually a big fan of Kaede-chan. I’ve loved her ever since her appearance in Summer Tomorrow. She’s perfect… nothing like you.”
Well, she went and said it.
Now this was awkward. Telling her any more about our ‘relationship’ would definitely cause issues in the future.
The bell rang, interrupting our conversation.
“Like I said, there’s nothing going on between us. She wouldn’t give me the time of day anyways. You should know that.”
She wasn’t completely convinced, but she also needed to get to class.
Ah, this was a bit of a hassle.
