Chapter 9: Looting with a Conscience

Ander turned around, embarrassed, and saw the three women's uncontrollable laughter. His face turned slightly red as he complained, "How long have you been awake?"

Alexa and Celine waved their hands, laughing so hard they couldn't speak. Anllela held back her laughter and said, "We just woke up, and we were looking at the system panel. Then, when we looked up, we saw your funny scene and couldn't hold back... Sorry!"

Ander sighed helplessly, "Well, laugh if you want to!"

At that, the three laughed even harder, filling the tatami room with their laughter. Once they were done, Ander became serious and asked, "By the way, I can use your superpowers. Don't you think that's strange?"

Celine rolled her eyes and said, "What's so strange about it? You forgot that we were reincarnated?"

Ander paused, scratching the back of his head, mentally cursing himself for asking such a dumb question.

"How much longer do you think Mei and the others will be unconscious?" he asked.

Alexa glanced at the time. "Probably another six hours."

Ander asked in confusion, "Then how did you wake up so early?"

Celine rolled her eyes again, seemingly exasperated by his question, "Aren't you the one who woke up even earlier than us?"

Anllela thoughtfully added, "Actually, it took us about six hours to wake up in our previous life too, but this time we woke up earlier... Maybe it has to do with our soul status?"

Alexa nodded, pondering, "Hmm, that's possible."

Just then, Anllela's eyes lit up, and she suggested with a smile, "Since we woke up early and the others are still sleeping, why don't we do something fun, like... zero-cost shopping?"

Alexa and Celine's eyes sparkled with excitement. Alexa patted Anllela on the shoulder and laughed, "Why not go to the pharmaceutical plant?"

"What do you need to go to the pharmaceutical plant for?" Ander asked, confused.

Celine chuckled and said without thinking, "Of course, to loot it."

Just as she finished speaking, Alexa shot her a glare. Celine immediately realized she had misspoken and stuck her tongue out.

Ander said seriously, "Looting is illegal. We can't do that."

Alexa sighed inwardly, understanding from her past life's experience that Ander still respected and upheld the law in the early days of the apocalypse. She patiently explained, "Ander, there is no law in the apocalypse anymore. Besides, the medicine you have is just basic supplies. If Priyanka, a cardiologist, needs specific medications, can you provide them? Additionally, medicine has a shelf life. Instead of letting it expire, it's better to stockpile it for future emergencies. These drugs will become scarce resources."

Anllela added, "Moreover, there aren't many people with storage abilities like Alexa. Even if someone else took the drugs, they wouldn't be able to preserve them properly, and they'd just go bad. It's best if we store them to keep them fresh."

Listening to their analysis, Ander nodded slightly, showing understanding, but still wrestled internally with the idea of breaking the law. He hesitated, "Then… why don't you go ahead; I'll stay here and watch over everyone."

As he finished speaking, he noticed the others in the tatami room gradually waking up. Alexa was surprised; why were they waking up so quickly? Her past experience suggested it usually took a full six hours for everyone to fully awaken.

"Are you all alright?" Alexa asked with concern.

Lily stretched and responded, "I feel great, like I had a good night's sleep."

"Is everyone else feeling okay?" Lily looked around to check with Marina and the others.

"No issues, just like you said, feeling refreshed," Marina replied, and the others nodded in agreement.

Alexa looked at them seriously and pointed out their abilities one by one. "Marina, your ability is explosions; Blaire, yours is temperature control; Lily, your ability is ionization. Am I right?"

Blaire looked at her in astonishment, "How did you know?"

Celine sighed, giving her a look, "Did you forget we were reborn?"

The others smiled awkwardly, realizing they often forgot this fact.

Alexa was about to explain her familiarity with their powers when Ander suddenly spoke up, "Hold on, Alexa, didn't you notice? They have prompt texts above their heads, showing their abilities and levels. You really didn't see it?"

Alexa and the others exchanged surprised glances, shaking their heads. "What prompt texts?"

"There's text above them showing their abilities and levels. You didn't see it?"

"No, did anyone else?" Alexa asked, but the others shook their heads as well.

"You don't need to ask them, host," the system's voice in Ander's mind interjected. "This is the high-level energy consciousness body in your body that requires me to give you special abilities."

Ander froze, then shook his head, muttering inwardly about how this system had come back to life. He didn't want to get tangled with the system anymore and simply turned to Alexa, saying, "Never mind, go ahead, Alexa."

Noticing his strange demeanor, Alexa glanced at him with curiosity but didn't ask further. She turned back to Marina, Blaire, and Lily. "Your abilities, like Anllela's, are all one-hit-kill moves. So, never, ever use them on your teammates, or you'll regret it for a lifetime." Her expression turned stern, her tone unusually grave. "Please, remember what I said, alright?"

The three nodded solemnly, replying in unison, "Don't worry, we'll remember."

Seeing their seriousness, Alexa felt reassured and began to explain, "While we have time, let's go over your abilities in detail." She turned to Marina, beginning the introductions. "Marina, your superpower can cause a zombie's, mutant zombie's, or even a human's head to explode instantly. You can even detonate roots or other parts of mutated plants. As your level increases, you'll be able to cause large-scale explosions within zombie groups, eliminating multiple enemies at once."

Hearing this, the group looked at Marina with admiration and envy, clearly impressed by her power.

"As for you, Blaire," Alexa said, turning to her with a mysterious smile. "Although your ability currently doesn't affect zombies, you're the only ability user I've met who can defeat opponents above your level. As long as they're human, no matter their level, you can boil or freeze their blood instantly by controlling their temperature, leaving them defenseless."

Blaire's eyes sparkled with excitement, clearly intrigued by her power's potential. Alexa added with a soft smile, "And once you reach level two, that restriction will be lifted. You'll be able to control temperature within a specified area, burning up swarms of zombies. It's quite a spectacular sight."

Blaire nodded excitedly, her eagerness to try can't be hidden in her expression. Anllela chuckled softly, "This kid is so easy to coax."

Alexa then turned to Lily with a slight smile. "Lily, your superpower is the most straightforward—just target the enemy, and it's done. Any enemy you hit will dissolve into particles of light and disappear completely from this world, leaving not even dust behind."

Her tone turned stern again. "Lily, remember, never use your superpower on teammates, or they'll vanish instantly, never to return."

Lily nodded with a serious and focused expression. With the three of them understanding, Alexa smiled, relieved, then turned to Hatala and Mei. "Your abilities come from natural elements. At first, you need to focus on sensing the wind and moisture, then use your energy to merge with these elements, turning them into tangible attacks. Mei, your ability is ice; when you sense moisture, you can use your energy to turn it into ice blades to attack enemies or create an ice shield to protect yourself."

Hatala and Mei exchanged glances, absorbing the guidance with focused expressions. "Understood, thank you for your guidance," they replied in unison.

Alexa shook her head with a comforting smile. "We're teammates and family. If you have any questions, just come to me; don't hesitate."

At that moment, Anllela looked at Ander and said, "Since everyone's awake, Alexa, Celine, and I should head to the pharmaceutical plant."

Ander nodded. "Be careful."

Anllela waved dismissively, joking, "Don't worry! People haven't turned into zombies yet, so there's no danger."

She and Alexa and Celine left with a quick farewell. As the door quietly closed, Marina turned to Ander, confusion on her face. "Why are they going to the pharmaceutical plant?"

Ander sighed, his tone slightly somber. "To get medicine."

"Who's the medicine for?" Marina pressed, seeming puzzled by the purpose.

Ander answered reluctantly, "It's for no one…they're just going to loot the plant."

"L-loot?" Marina's voice trembled with shock, her gaze filled with disbelief. "They…aren't they breaking the law?"

She didn't want to label them as thieves; Alexa and Celine were her idols, and thinking of them as thieves was something she couldn't accept.

The others remained silent, their faces displaying mixed emotions. Ander recounted Alexa's reasoning, easing their concerns a bit, though they still felt conflicted.

"Medicine expires, and so does food, doesn't it?" Mei interjected with a hint of resignation. "If we don't collect it, are we just going to watch it go to waste?"

Blaire, now convinced, suggested with a grin, "Then we should go 'collect' a little, too!"

Ander and Marina hesitated, exchanging glances before finally nodding. "Alright, let's go."

Just then, the lights flickered twice and went out, plunging the room into darkness.

"Oh no, did the power just go out?" Hatala said.

After checking the switch, Ander confirmed the outage. Blaire shrugged with a smile, "Looks like we really have no choice but to go."

Hatala suggested, "If you're uneasy about it, we could donate what we collect to those in need. It might ease our conscience."

After a moment of contemplation, Ander, thinking of Robin Hood's righteous actions, finally made up his mind. "Alright, let's do that."

"So where should we go to collect, Walter?" Hatala asked.

In this parallel world, there was no Walmart, only Walter.

"There must be plenty of survivors there, so we should leave the food for them," Lily suggested.

"No, I think differently," Mei said, glancing at the group with a sense of urgency in her tone. "If a zombie grabs or bites someone, that person will turn into a zombie too. One infects two, and two infect four—before long, everyone in the mall might turn into zombies. Places with heavy foot traffic, like stations, hospitals, and malls, are bound to have the most zombies. If we don't collect them now, it will be even more difficult to collect them in the future when they all turn into zombies."

Blaire wrapped an arm around Mei's shoulder and kissed her cheek, praising, "Mei, you're truly a genius; your analysis is spot on!"

 *** *** ***

The sky was overcast, with low, heavy clouds casting a somber tone over the entire city. The red Ferrari's engine purred quietly, gliding across the slick roads as its taillights flared brightly in the dim light. The car zipped through a slightly desolate highway, gradually moving away from the skyscraper-lined city center.

Through the rearview mirror, the city skyline faded, like a microcosm pushed away from afar. Inside the four-seater Ferrari were three elegantly dressed women, each with a unique charm. Despite the gloomy weather outside, their smiles brought a warm ambiance to the car's interior. The driver, focusing intently on the road, hummed a tune; the passenger beside her held sunglasses, gazing thoughtfully out the window; and the woman in the back seat was happily singing along to the music while adjusting her seat, her face radiating joy.

As the Ferrari picked up speed, the atmosphere inside was light and relaxed—they were heading to a pharmaceutical factory five kilometers away.

"Country roads...take me home...To the place...I belong..." Alexa and Celine cheerfully sang along with the music playing in the car.

"Alexa, do you think Ander will see us as ill-behaved, bad women for doing this?" asked Anllela, seated in the passenger seat.

Alexa lowered the music volume with a smile and replied, "I don't think so. I'm sure he understands our intent."

Anllela shook her head and said, "I feel like it's not worth it for us to do this."

"It doesn't matter, in this apocalypse, supplies are the most important thing—no one can stop me from gathering resources," Celine said firmly, clenching her fist in the back seat.

"The factory owner may not turn into a zombie; he could still be alive. Maybe we should leave him a check—that way it wouldn't count as theft," Alexa suggested.

Celine rolled her eyes. "You're overthinking it. Banks are closed; how's he going to cash a check?"

Anllela chuckled softly. "Alexa just wants a clear conscience, which isn't a bad thing."

Alexa believed firmly that as long as her actions were justifiable, they were right. After a moment of contemplation, she said in a low voice, "It's strange, though. This apocalypse feels different from before. There wasn't any 'system' last time."
