Chapter 3: Chapter Three: The Trial of Shadows
The wolf circled Caden, its glowing blue eyes locked on him. Every move it made was deliberate, predatory, testing his defenses. The mist swirled around them like a living shroud, amplifying the tension in the air.
Caden's breathing steadied, his grip tightening as golden energy flickered between his fingers. The ring pulsed on his hand, feeding him strength he didn't fully understand.
"Focus," the voice in his head whispered, calm but firm. "The ring responds to intent. Fear will weaken you. Resolve will strengthen you."
The wolf lunged.
Caden barely had time to raise his hands, his instincts kicking in as he unleashed another Ringstrike. A golden blast surged forward, slamming into the beast mid-air and sending it crashing into the forest floor. It howled, shaking the ground, and scrambled back to its feet, unrelenting.
"You've got to be kidding me," Caden muttered, his hands glowing brighter as he prepared for the next attack.
The beast charged again, its speed almost supernatural. This time, Caden dodged to the side, the creature's claws narrowly missing him as it skidded past. He swung his arm out, channeling energy into a second attack, but before he could release it, the wolf vanished into the mist.
Caden froze, his heart pounding. His eyes darted through the fog, searching for any sign of movement. "Where are you?" he muttered under his breath, his grip tightening.
The ring pulsed again, and suddenly, a translucent prompt appeared in his vision:
---
Ability Unlock: Foresense (Level 1)
Description: Briefly glimpse your opponent's next move. Requires focus and energy.
---
The wolf snarled, its voice echoing from every direction. Caden closed his eyes, forcing himself to tune out the noise. He concentrated, feeling the ring's energy hum through him. For a moment, everything fell silent—then a vision flashed in his mind.
He saw the wolf leaping from his left, its claws outstretched, aiming for his chest.
His eyes snapped open, and he spun just as the wolf lunged from the mist. This time, he was ready. Caden ducked low, narrowly avoiding the strike, and slammed his glowing fist into the creature's side. Energy erupted on impact, sending the wolf sprawling.
The beast struggled to rise, its movements slower now, its glowing eyes dimmer. Caden felt the tide turning. He steadied himself, channeling his remaining energy into one final attack. The ring pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat, the golden light in his hands growing brighter and brighter.
The wolf growled weakly, preparing for one last charge.
Caden raised his hand and released the energy. A brilliant wave of golden light surged forward, enveloping the beast. The wolf howled as it dissolved into shimmering blue particles, which scattered into the mist like fireflies.
Silence fell over the forest.
Caden stood there, his chest heaving, the golden glow in his hands fading. The ring felt warm on his finger, almost... satisfied.
The voice returned, calm and steady. "Trial complete. You have taken your first step as a Ringbound."
A new interface appeared before him:
---
Trial Complete
Experience Gained: +50
Ability Upgraded: Ringstrike (Level 2)
New Path Unlocked: The Shadow's Edge
---
"What's the Shadow's Edge?" Caden asked aloud, but there was no response. The interface faded, leaving him alone once more.
He looked at the faint trail ahead, which now glowed faintly with blue light. Whatever the Shadow's Edge was, it was waiting for him.
Caden wiped the sweat from his brow and tightened his armor. This was just the beginning, but he was ready.
The forest stirred, the whispers rising once more. And Caden, for the first time, felt prepared to meet them.
