Chapter 7: Chapter 6 : Whispers in the wind
Meng Yu perched at the edge of the low table, his legs crossed, toying with the hem of his sleeve while he gazed down at his lap. Lin Mei was busy in the small room, arranging herbs and ingredients, her gentle humming resonating in the air. The early afternoon sunlight streamed in through the open window, illuminating the simple yet cozy space they shared.
"You know," Lin Mei remarked, without diverting her attention from her work, "the herbalist requested that I send you for your next dose of suppressants. I'll accompany you, but I have other responsibilities today. Would you be alright going alone? "
Meng Yu immediately pouted, his gaze sharpening in playful defiance. "I'm not a child, Lin Mei. I'm seventeen! " He stressed the number, as if it should conclusively end the discussion.
Lin Mei's lips formed a gentle, teasing grin as she turned to look at him. She set the jar down and sat next to him on the floor, tucking some stray hair behind his ear. "I know you're seventeen, but that doesn't alter the fact that you're an adorable omega. And I'm just a beta. I can't afford the risk of walking alone like you can. "
Meng Yu's pout grew more pronounced. "I'm not a child," he repeated, glancing away, a slight flush appearing on his cheeks from her comments. It wasn't the first time she had playfully referenced his omega status, yet it consistently made him feel smaller, even though it was intended as a compliment.
Lin Mei's smile softened further, and she tenderly placed a hand on his shoulder. "I didn't intend it that way. But you are special, Yu'er. You deserve someone to look out for you, particularly with all the unknowns we face. Just promise me you'll stay safe, okay? "
The gentle worry in her tone caused a tightness in Meng Yu's chest. He met Lin Mei's gaze, his eyes softening, revealing a trace of vulnerability in his typically calm demeanor. He lowered his head, sensing a burden he hadn't acknowledged before. "I'll go. Don't fret. "
Lin Mei chuckled lightly, her eyes sparkling with affection as she tousled his hair. "Alright, off you go then. Just don't take too long. I'll be right here when you return. "
With that, Meng Yu rose, collecting the small pouch of coins Lin Mei had prepared for him, steeling himself to venture outside. He cast her one final glance, a gentle smile gracing his lips before stepping through the door.
As he navigated the twisting streets on his way to the herbalist's residence, the heaviness of Lin Mei's words lingered in his thoughts. He had been raised in an environment that regarded him as fragile, as something needing protection, even though he had always felt disconnected from the delicate image everyone held of him. He had grown weary of that sentiment—exhausted by being perceived as something weak, something that required care. Yet despite this, part of him couldn't refute that Lin Mei was correct. He was an omega, and the world was equally perilous as it was beautiful.
---
The herbalist's home was situated on the outskirts of the village, with a path meandering through a tangle of unruly ivy and thriving flowers. The atmosphere was laden with the scent of herbs, drying roots, and fresh leaves. Meng Yu paused before knocking on the door, his fingers gliding across the smooth wood.
Bai Ling, the herbalist, welcomed him with a warm, inviting smile. The older omega was renowned for her expertise in herbs and tonics, but more than that, she was someone who had witnessed the dangers lurking in the world, and she never hesitated to offer guidance.
"Yu'er," Bai Ling greeted him, her tone warm and familiar. She emanated a motherly presence, a gentleness that soothed the nerves of anyone who stepped inside her home. "I have the suppressants prepared for you. You seem well, but I can't shake the feeling that you've been straying a bit too close to the woods lately. " She spoke as she handed him a small vial, her gaze narrowing slightly with concern.
Meng Yu accepted the bottle, but he couldn't dismiss the surge of unease in his chest at her remarks. "I'm fine. Just picking them up and heading back home," he assured her, forcing a smile.
However, Bai Ling didn't appear convinced. She placed the bottle on the counter and approached him, her steps light yet intentional. "Yu'er, the woods are not a suitable place for someone like you to venture alone. It's perilous. You're too… vulnerable, and with the forest so near your home…" She paused, her expression grave. "Please promise me you won't go out there by yourself. "
Meng Yu felt a tightening in his chest, his smile wavering. He wished to argue, to convince her that he could manage on his own, but Bai Ling's worry felt too sincere, too palpable. She was an omega as well, and she understood all too well the threats that existed in a world where strength and dominance were esteemed above everything else.
"I will exercise caution," Meng Yu assured, although the statement sounded empty even as it escaped his lips. The reality was, he had no desire to be cautious. He yearned to uncover the truth, to comprehend why everything seemed so off, yet there was no means to express that to her.
Bai Ling's expression softened, yet there was a trace of hesitation in her eyes as she placed the vial into his hand. "Just promise me, Yu'er. Don't stray too far into the forest. "
Meng Yu nodded once more, his fingers wrapping around the vial as he stowed it in his pouch. He exited the herbalist's cottage with a sorrowful heart, the significance of Bai Ling's words looming over him.
---
The journey home felt longer than normal. The sun was starting to set, casting elongated shadows along the path as Meng Yu headed towards the village's edge. He inhaled deeply, trying to dispel the tension that had settled into him, but it only intensified with each step. Something felt amiss.
As he approached the forest's border, he halted, a prickling sensation of being observed washing over him. His heart began to race as he scanned his surroundings, yet no one was in sight. The forest remained motionless, its dark shadows sprawling out like fingers extending toward him.
And then, he spotted him.
A figure emerged from the trees, tall and broad-shouldered, commanding attention with his presence. Meng Yu's breath caught in his throat. An Alpha. His demeanor was relaxed, almost sluggish, but his eyes shone with a predatory glint.
Meng Yu stood frozen, instinctively stepping back, but the Alpha was already advancing toward him.
"What a beautiful creature," the Alpha remarked, his voice smooth, oozing with something that sent a shiver down Meng Yu's spine.
Meng Yu's throat constricted, yet he did not yield. "Don't touch me," he declared, his voice shaky but resolute. The words scarcely left his lips before the Alpha's hand shot out, seizing his wrist with a vice-like grip.
The Alpha smirked, amused, his eyes darkening with latent danger. "You think you can order me around? "
Meng Yu's heart raced. He tugged at his wrist, attempting to break free, but the Alpha's grasp was firm. Panic began to seep in. "Let go of me," he hissed, his tone now sharper.
The Alpha's gaze sparked with amusement as his grin broadened. "You're really quite disobedient," he murmured, his voice low and mocking. "Allow me to teach you. "
Before Meng Yu could respond, the Alpha's pheromones flooded him like a tidal wave. The thick, musky aroma engulfed his senses, infiltrating his thoughts and clouding his mind. His body instinctively reacted, his breath snagging in his throat as the scent enveloped him.
Meng Yu's vision began to blur, and his knees buckled, his body wrestling against the urge to collapse. His heart raced, but his head felt heavy, as though he was sinking under the weight of the Alpha's aura.
"No. . . " he gasped, but the words were hardly intelligible, overwhelmed by the overpowering fragrance.
The Alpha's fingers grazed the delicate skin of Meng Yu's neck, causing a tremor to ripple down his spine. His hold intensified, and Meng Yu whimpered, powerless to flee.
"You'll understand," the Alpha murmured into his ear, his tone smooth like a caress, yet laden with a predatory threat. "In one way or another. "
Meng Yu's thoughts fragmented, his body weakened by the Alpha's authority. The environment seemed to swirl around him, and all he could manage was to quiver under the Alpha's grasp, unable to escape.
