Chapter 8: Chapter 7 : A Dance of Shadows and fear
The cool night air carried the distant buzz of cicadas, blending with the whispering leaves. Meng Yu inhaled in shallow breaths, his chest rising and falling quickly as the Alpha's rough hand held him firmly against the bark of a towering tree. The rough surface scraped against his back, and a pulsing pain throbbed in his head from the collision.
"Such perfect skin," the Alpha murmured, his fingers grazing the contour of Meng Yu's jaw. "A true treasure indeed. "
Meng Yu's stomach twisted with disgust. His heart raced in his ears as he turned his head aside, his hands shaking as they pushed against the Alpha's chest in a desperate attempt to shove him away. "Don't… touch me," he hissed through gritted teeth, his voice strained yet filled with defiance.
The Alpha's lips twisted into a sinister grin, his grip tightening as he leaned in closer. "Oh? Do you believe you have a choice? "
A shiver traveled through Meng Yu's body, but his mind urged him to fight back. I won't allow him to triumph. His fists clenched tightly, even though his strength paled in comparison to the overpowering Alpha.
The overwhelming heat of the Alpha's pheromones clouded his perception, leaving him lightheaded. His mind swirled, a mix of fear and uncertainty muddling his thoughts. The atmosphere became warmer, heavy with a weight that caused his chest to ache. He despised this sensation—loathed how powerless he felt.
"Please…" Meng Yu gasped, his voice small, exposed despite his best attempts. "Let me go…"
But the Alpha merely chuckled darkly, dismissing his plea as his hand slid possessively down Meng Yu's neck.
The moment appeared to stretch endlessly, a nightmare that wouldn't conclude, until a low, melodic voice cut through the fog like a knife through silk.
"What do you think you're doing? "
The sound was serene yet eerie, filled with quiet authority.
The Alpha halted, his grip loosening as he turned sharply toward the speaker. From the shadows, a figure materialized, his golden eyes shining like dual suns penetrating the darkness. He moved with unhurried elegance, commanding attention, as though he were the very essence of the night.
Meng Yu's chest constricted as the stranger's scent—rich with wine and rosewood—enveloped him, piercing through the stifling haze left by the Alpha's pheromones. The air surrounding him seemed to become lighter, but his heart quickened again, this time from an attraction he couldn't comprehend.
The Alpha stuttered, his voice a mere whisper. "S-Superior Alpha…"
The stranger tilted his head slightly, his golden eyes narrowing. "Is that what you believe I am? " His voice hinted at amusement, yet it was undercut by something considerably darker.
Meng Yu grasped the tree for stability, the gravity of the moment pressing heavily upon him. Yet, within the turmoil in his thoughts, a spark of clarity emerged. Who is this man? Why does he seem… familiar?
The Alpha stepped back, his hands shaking. "I-I had no idea…"
"Had no idea about what? " the stranger cut in, his voice smooth and firm. He moved closer, and the shadows surrounding him appeared to pulsate like a living being. "That this little one wasn't yours to grasp? "
Meng Yu's breath caught as he observed the interaction, his fear transforming into something more intricate—a tentative curiosity. The tone of the stranger's voice held a weight that both menaced and comforted. How can someone be so frightening yet feel… secure?
Regaining his voice, Meng Yu managed to say, despite his quivering words, "Leave him be. He's not worth it. "
The stranger's eyes shifted to Meng Yu, his expression enigmatic. For a fleeting moment, a softness swept across his features, akin to the brief shimmer of moonlight piercing thick clouds. But it vanished just as swiftly, replaced by an unsettling grin.
"You've always been so understanding," the stranger remarked, almost nostalgically. His attention shifted back to the Alpha, whose body shook like a leaf caught in a gust. "Sadly, I'm not. "
In a flash, the stranger's hand darted out, seizing the Alpha's neck. The Alpha gasped, his eyes wide with fright as he desperately clawed at the unyielding grip.
"Doesn't this seem familiar? " the stranger whispered, his golden eyes sparkling with malicious delight. "The way he pleaded with you… the way you disregarded him. " His voice lowered to a murmur, each syllable as sharp as a weapon. "But I'm not an Alpha. "
The atmosphere thickened, laden with unarticulated power, as the stranger's eyes deepened into a slight crimson hue overtaking the gold. The Alpha's whimpers abruptly ceased with a sickening crack, and his lifeless form collapsed to the earth.
The sound of shattering bones reverberated in Meng Yu's ears, and his body quaked uncontrollably. Tears clouded his sight as his hands flew to his mouth to suppress a whimper. The stranger turned, his golden eyes now softened, their illumination almost entrancing.
Meng Yu recoiled against the tree, his voice barely piercing the hush. "Who… are you? "
The stranger drew nearer, the aroma of wine and rosewood enveloping Meng Yu like a guardian mantle. He crouched down, his voice deep and resonant. "Someone you wished you'd never crossed paths with. "
Meng Yu's heart raced, a chaotic mix of dread and intrigue swirling inside him. His voice trembled as he inquired, "Were you… the one from that night? "
The stranger's lips curled into a smirk, his fingers brushing away a stray tear from Meng Yu's cheek. "Perhaps I was," he replied softly, "or possibly not. "
Meng Yu looked at the nearby lifeless body, unease tightening its grip on his chest. Yet, oddly, the terror he ought to have felt remained far off. Instead, a strange sense of serenity washed over him, as if the stranger's presence provided a distorted kind of safety. Why am I not fearful?
The newcomer stood up, his eyes fixed on Meng Yu. The woods appeared to pause, the cherry blossoms moving softly in the wind as if they were quietly observing.
Meng Yu's shaking voice shattered the quiet. "What… what do you want from me? "
The stranger laughed quietly, his chuckle reminiscent of leaves rustling. "The inquiry isn't what I seek, little one," he stated, his tone filled with enigma. "It's what you're prepared to offer. "
Meng Yu's mind raced chaotically, the significance of the stranger's words embedding itself as his feelings wrangled within him. The atmosphere was charged with unvoiced tension, a peculiar connection that neither acknowledged, yet both detected.
The stranger moved even nearer, his presence suffocating, and Meng Yu's heart raced as he found himself ensnared in his gaze, unable to avert his eyes. The stranger's lips lingered close to his ear, his breath gentle against his skin.
"I believe you know what you yearn for the most," the stranger whispered, his tone soft and personal. "But fret not, little one. I won't seize it from you. At least not yet. "
Meng Yu's breath hitched in his throat, his body quivering with the moment's intensity. The cherry blossoms circled them, their petals drifting gently like confetti, as if the very land bore witness to something far beyond their comprehension.
Then, as suddenly as he had appeared, the stranger retreated, his eyes sparkling with something elusive. "You will grasp it soon enough," he uttered softly, almost to himself. "But until that time, let me impart one final notion. "
With a gesture of his hand, the wind swirled around them, and the stranger vanished into the shadows just as swiftly as he had arrived.
Meng Yu remained motionless, his heart racing wildly in his chest, the forest around him hauntingly quiet. His thoughts were disarrayed, as if the stranger's words had unraveled all he believed he understood.
