Chapter 5: Chapter 9 – Connections Revealed
The day was cold in New York, and Rafael and Gigi decided to meet at a quiet café near Central Park. They were talking more and more, and something undeniable was growing between them: a chemistry that seemed to grow stronger with each meeting.
Sitting at a table near the window, with warm mugs of coffee in their hands, they watched the movement outside. Gigi was especially talkative that day, sharing details of her childhood.
"My father has always been an important figure in my life," she said, as she stirred her coffee with a spoon. "Did you know he was born in Israel?"
Rafael raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"I didn't know. That explains a lot."
"Like what?" Gigi asked, leaning forward slightly, curious.
"Your strength," Rafael replied with a slight smile. "It's impressive how you balance so much in your life."
She blushed, but smiled.
— Well, he was always very firm and disciplined with me and Bella. Maybe I inherited that from him.
— Israel has that trait. — Rafael commented, as if thinking out loud.
— Have you ever been there? — Gigi asked, excited.
Rafael took a sip of coffee before answering.
— Yes, a few times. I trained with the Israeli forces.
Gigi's eyes widened.
— Seriously? That's incredible.
— They are very advanced in combat and security techniques. I learned a lot there. — He explained, without going into details.
— You never cease to amaze me, Rafael. — Gigi said, resting her chin on her hand. — Did you learn any of the language?
Rafael smiled, noticing her curiosity.
— A little. Enough to get by there.
— Like what? — She asked, a glint of amusement in her eyes.
He leaned forward slightly, looking into her eyes.
— רוצה שאדבר איתך בעברית? (Do you want me to speak to you in Hebrew?)
Gigi's smile disappeared for a moment, replaced by surprise.
— Wow. That was... perfect. — She said, after a few seconds. — What did you say?
— I asked if you want me to speak to you in Hebrew. — Rafael translated, laughing at her surprise.
— Of course I do! — She replied, still impressed.
Rafael continued, in Hebrew:
— את חזקה ויפה. (You are strong and beautiful.)
Gigi blushed immediately, but kept her smile.
— Okay, now you're leaving me speechless.
— I'm just being honest. — Rafael replied, now in English, with a casual tone that contrasted with the intensity of what he had said before.
— I had no idea you knew so many things. — Gigi commented, still trying to process. — But it makes sense. You seem to have lived a thousand different lives.
— Something like that. — He replied with a half smile.
For a moment, the café was silent. Gigi looked at Rafael, realizing how intriguing he was. He carried a silent strength, something she couldn't help but admire.
— I find it fascinating how discreet you are about your life. — She said, breaking the silence.
— And I find it fascinating how transparent you are. — He replied, with a sparkle in his eyes.
She laughed, shaking her head.
— You don't make it easy, do you?
— Making it easy has never been my strong point. — Rafael joked, provoking another laugh from her.
When the café began to fill up, they decided to walk through Central Park. The cold was biting, but the conversation kept them warm.
— Rafael, can I ask you something? — Gigi said after a while.
— Sure.
— Why did you learn Hebrew? It's not exactly a common language.
He paused for a moment, looking straight ahead, as if choosing his words carefully.
— When you work in special forces, you have to be prepared for any situation. Training with Israeli troops was a unique opportunity, and learning the language helped build trust and communication.
— It seems like you were very good at what you did. — Gigi commented, admiring.
— I dedicated myself. — He replied, without boasting.
They continued walking, and Gigi couldn't help but glance at him sideways. Rafael was a mysterious man, but also incredibly attentive and present.
— And you? — He asked, interrupting her thoughts. — What do you like to do most besides work and the gym?
— I love to cook. — She answered, smiling.
— Cook? — He asked, clearly surprised.
— Yes! I know it seems a bit unexpected, but I love creating recipes. It's one of the few things that actually helps me relax.
Rafael smiled, genuinely interested.
"Maybe one day you can show me those cooking skills."
"Maybe," Gigi replied, teasing him with a smile.
When night fell, they said goodbye with a hug that lasted a little longer than usual.
"It was a good day," Gigi said, looking at him.
"I agree," Rafael replied, with a soft smile.
As Gigi walked home, she felt different. Rafael was clearly becoming someone special in her life, and she couldn't wait to where that would take her.
